SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The bomb squad was called to the 2300 block of Meadow Lark Drive around 6:20 p.m. after a man reported he found WWII-era Japanese grenades.The man, Mike Carter, is a former Marine and said his training kicked in when he found the three gnarled pieces of metal."I just figured it would be the right thing to do to dispose of them properly and not throw them in the trash," Carter said.He is a hobbyist, buying items like radio-controlled cars, helicopters and other toys, and then he sells them online. One remote control helicopter that he said he paid for is actually valued closer to ,500.This was his second time buying a storage locker and his interest was piqued by a Saturn IV Rocket. With it came a wooden box he put in the bed of his truck.As he worked his way through the items inside, he came across the bombs.Carter said he took a picture of them, then put them back where he found them and called the bomb squad.He said he was never nervous about them exploding, saying they've been around at least 75 years.His street was shut down for about an hour. He apologized for the trouble to his neighbors.When it comes to whether he'll ever buy a storage locker again, he said maybe. There would have to be something worthwhile inside, and he would check the contents before bringing anything home. 1362

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The homeless population in San Diego County has decreased over the last year, according to a San Diego task force.  Every year, the county conducts a tally of how many people are homeless on a single night in January. This year’s count, done on January 26, was coordinated by the Regional Task Force on the Homeless.The task force says the number of homeless throughout the county has decreased six percent to 8,576. However, the number of homeless veterans went up to 1,300 - a 24 percent increase. Supervisor Ron Roberts, the Homeless Task Force Chairman, says permanent housing still needs to be a priority. “Seeing the overall number decline was a positive reversal, but there are far too many swings in data to declare a trend or to not see other areas where we need to increase our focus,” said San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, who chairs the RTFH. “We continue to face many challenges, highlighted by a lack of new housing, a condition that squeezes hardest those with the fewest resources."RELATED: Volunteers count number of homeless living in San DiegoThe numbers from the federally-mandated Point-in-Time Count (PITC) show the number of sheltered and unsheltered homeless people in each of the county’s 18 cities, as well as in unincorporated areas.The County will present the full report, with a more in-depth analysis of the data, to the task force at 3 p.m.The PITC is meant to help communities and policymakers understand their regions’ most current challenges and areas with the most pressing need for limited funding. 1594

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The countdown has begun for St. Patrick's Day in San Diego. The Gaslamp District is heavily bedazzled with sparkly green decorations. Many people said they are ready to party.Niamh Thornton is a 24 year old Irish student, now living in San Diego. “Niamh is pronounced like “Christmas Eve,” but with an “N” like “Neev”… It’s Irish,” Thornton said.She has been working at the Field Irish Pub in the Gaslamp District since last June."It's called an Irish Mule… It's lovely,” she said, pointing at a popular drink at the pub.The Irish native was getting ready for a 10-hour shift at the Field Saturday. "It's going to be crazy, I'd say,” Thornton said. Crazy may be an understatement.Saturday, many blocks downtown will be closed from sunrise to sunset-- for the morning Shamrock Run, the daytime parade, and shamROCK, the evening concert. Plus, many will be staring at the television screens, screaming for their favorite Irish teams. “England vs. Ireland in the rugby,” she said. ”And six nations. That’s insane. So this place is going to be packed.”But some people just could not wait to pre-party. Many people we saw in Downtown were showcasing their green accessories and outfits. Some were fully dressed up as lucky leprechauns. Kristin Ventura was showing off her Irish American pride with her co-workers at the Field Irish Pub. She said it is the one day of the year that anyone can be an honorary Irishman."Everyone is a little bit Irish,” Ventura said. “Deep down inside, there is that little spunk in you."Thornton said that spunk comes from St. Patrick himself, who legend said, saved the island from a slithery invasion."He got rid of snakes in Ireland,” Thornton said. “So that's why there are no snakes in Ireland."That was the start of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration for everyone — even for those on the other side of the planet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting they be allowed to reopen the local economy.The board voted 4-1, with Supervisor Nathan Fletcher voting "no," to take further steps into reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic. The letter requests San Diego County be permitted to reopen gyms, hotels, nail salons, wineries and breweries, churches at full capacity, theme parks, youth sports, charter and fishing boats, community pools, and museums, Supervisor Jim Desmond tweeted.Following the vote, Desmond said in a statement that it will be up to Newsom, but that most of the board believes the county is ready.RELATED: Passive recreation activities now allowed at San Diego County beaches"Just now, the Board approved a plan telling the Governor we are ready to open for business. It's ultimately up to the Governor to decide, but the message is clear from the Board of Supervisors, we are ready to open," Desmond's statement read.It wasn't immediately clear what specific limits these businesses would be required to operate under if allowed to reopen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Laurel Street Bridge at Balboa Park was closed late Friday after a fire started inside the bridge. At around 7:30 p.m., Park Rangers called the San Diego Fire Department after seeing smoke coming out of the side of the 105-year-old bridge. The closure caused great inconvenience for Old Globe Theater patrons trying to get to and out of Friday night's show. Season ticket holders Kenny Ard and Brian Moore barely made it to the theater, before the bridge was closed off by emergency responders. Witnesses saw firefighters carefully try to suppress the flames by opening the manholes on the road.“We kind of rushed when we saw the fire truck," Moore said. “I was like, I bet they’re going to close the bridge. So we hurried and made sure we got here.“San Diego Fire Fighters said the fire broke out inside of the hollow bridge. They have not announced the cause of the flames. However, this scene was all too familiar. Since its construction in 1914, the Laurel Street Bridge has caught fire several times. Many of the fires were started by transients who end up living inside the bridge. In 2017, several homeless people were rescued from inside a utility hole on the bridge.“There are access panels at the base and some on the sides, and so people get in there,” Moore said. While Are and Moore were able to avoid the jam getting to the show, they were not so lucky finding their way home.“My car is parked right on the other side of the bridge,” And said. “We’re going to have to take a Lyft because it’s a long way around.”The bridge had reopened by Saturday morning. 1601
