SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The search is on for three teenagers that held a man at gunpoint then stole his car in Paradise Hills.According to San Diego police, the incident happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at the victim's apartment complex on Doriana Street.Police believe the carjacking happened just minutes after the same teenagers attempted, but failed, to carjack another man near the intersection of Alta View and Potomac, a few blocks away.The victim suffered a minor injuries to the head and is expected to be OK.Police say the three teens are believed to be between the ages of 16-18. They sped off in the victim's gray Honda and are still on the loose.Detailed descriptions of the teens and a license plate number for the stolen car were not immediately released. 778

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The pool for inmate fire crews is shrinking after a bill lessening crimes went into effect in California, according to Cal Fire Public Information Officer Issac Sanchez.A record breaking wet winter led to a superbloom of epic proportions across San Diego County. New growth that will dry out and turn to tinder this summer, according to fire officials."We are poised daily, year round now to fight wildfire," Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said.Cal Fire relying on every resource to lend a hand if necessary.Our sister station in Redding reported last year one particular kind of crew is running low. Easy to see in their orange fire gear, volunteer inmate crews help firefigthers by completing tasks like digging fire breaks.Last year they had a "brown out" where they had to deactivate a crew to keep the others adequately staffed. "From what I understand it is absolutely an impact," Sanchez said referring to AB 109. The law, passed in 2011 lessened crimes for convicts ultimately letting out hundreds.According to our sister station, the humber of inmates at fire camps dropped from 2013 by 11%. That's 451 inmates.Leaving the CDCR with more work, "to identify and kinda steer eligible candidates into the program," Sanchez said.He said inmates must meet certain criteria like working well with others, being non-violent offenders, and meeting physical requirements."We still have enough folks to staff the crews, it's just a matter of identifying them at this point," Sanchez said.In San Diego County we have four inmate fire camps, in Fallbrook, Warner Springs, Julian and Boulevard. 1616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Police Department is preparing for the possibility of big demonstrations on and around Election Day. "We don't have any credible information to say that there's going to be civil unrest or large protests groups out on Election Day or soon thereafter on Election Day. However, we have been in contact with other cities throughout the United States. We've been in contact with our federal partners throughout the United States. We're preparing for possible unrest to occur on Election Day and afterward," said SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi.SDPD will not reveal exact staffing levels but said that officers will be ready to handle the calls. Lt. Takeuchi added that SDPD has nine stations throughout the city and it’s up to each station's captain to determine appropriate staffing levels for the election. He said that officers are mindful of concerns surrounding the ballots and the pandemic. “As humans, when you don't know your future, I think it brings out a little bit of anxiety and so I think that we are aware of that and the emotions,” Takeuchi added.Sean Eldridge, with Protect the Results, told ABC10 News his group is focused in part on preparing several upcoming rallies in San Diego and beyond.“Part of our work at Protect the Results is to encourage every American to be patient and realize that it could take days if not longer before we know the full count of this election,” said Eldridge. "We have nearly 400 pre-planned events across the country which could happen as early as the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 4, the day after Election Day, if Trump were to try to undermine the election results.”Eldridge says that participants are being encouraged to remain peaceful.Lt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Medical Examiner ruled the death of a teenager who jumped off a bridge in Carmel Valley was an accident. Ruben Ortiz, 18, was one of six people in a Nissan Altima on July 9 when the car crashed on SR-56.Two passengers got out of the car and ran away, officers said. Ortiz and 17-year-old Jesse Garcia jumped 80 feet off the bridge into Gonzales Creek, not realizing it was a dangerous drop, according to investigators. Garcia and Ortiz, who suffered multiple blunt force injuries, died at the scene. RELATED: Teen identified after deadly jump from Carmel Valley bridge following crash A toxicology test showed Ortiz had THC and a trace amount of alcohol in his blood. California Highway Patrol officers said Garcia had been driving the night of the crash. Investigators found an open beer can in the center console. Two girls, ages 14 and 15, suffered severe injuries. The two unharmed passengers were later found for questioning.The CHP has not determined why the car spun out of control. 1030
