Ananya Vinay, the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion, has had quite a year.It started with confetti cannons on stage after she spelled "marocain" correctly. Then she made the rounds: talk shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live and other media appearances. She rode in a limo to the Golden State Warriors' final basketball game of last season, and got to see the trophy presentation when her team won the championship."It was really exciting," she said. She also toured the Google campus, got a rally at her school and had a day named in her honor by the governor of California. It was all a big surprise, she said. And she's picked up other hobbies, too: she made it to the National Science Bowl, the state science fair and competed in Mathcounts. She also wants to write more and join the forensics team. And she's started a website and tutors some spellers.A lot of it comes from her Bee experience."It really gives you a lot of confidence," Ananya said. "It gives you a lot of knowledge about the world."Ananya carried the trophy in to the opening ceremony Monday night and kicked off the Bee."I'm really glad to be back; I have a lot of friends here," she said. "I'm hoping for the best for every competitor." 1216

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, the restaurant industry is one of the first starting to deal with a second round of closures.Restaurant owners and employees are starting to fear the losses that could come as a result. For example, the restaurant Eden in Chicago opened its doors in 2016. But the first week of March, it was on pace to have its best quarter since opening. Owner Jodi Fyfe said so much changed a week later.“At that time, we had 526 employees. If you look at it today, we have 24,” said Fyfe.In March, she had to start laying off more than 90 percent of her workers and despite reopening over the summer, she couldn't afford to keep her staff on the payroll and pay the restaurant rent.Looking at the business potential over the winter was bleak. COVID-19 cases were projected to rise, and a potential second round of restaurant closure mandates would be even more financially devastating. In August, Fyfe made a tough, but what she felt was a necessary decision.“Essentially, we had to close the restaurant and that was like a death,” she said. “It was like the death of a family member.”Fyfe focused on keeping her other business, catering, afloat, while now seeing the reality she feared. As many as 7,500 restaurants just in Illinois may have to close permanently as a result of a recent indoor dining ban.“It is becoming devastating,” said Sam Toia, who is with the Illinois Restaurant Association.Toia worries about the effect on both restaurant owners and employees.“If things don’t change with no indoor dining or no stimulus bill, 66 percent of the restaurants feel they could be out of business within the next four months,” Toia added. This week, the National Restaurant Association sent a letter to governors and mayors across the country, stating in part it has “not found any systemic outbreaks of COVID-19 from the hundreds of thousands of restaurants around the country that operate within the Association's guidance.”The association is urging officials to reconsider current bans and future ones based on the data.“We are such a vital part of serving an underserved community, finding them jobs, finding them a livelihood,” said Sean Kennedy with the National Restaurant Association. “When we shut down, a lot of folks do not have the transferable skills that they can apply elsewhere. The restaurant industry really needs to stay strong so we can take care of these people.”Roughly 2 million restaurant workers are currently out of work, and further closures mean even more will be unemployed. With no new stimulus bill, these workers, along with restaurant owners, stand to lose the livelihoods, with little to no help on the horizon. 2678

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A municipal government in China has donated 40,000 medical-grade face masks to Maryland’s capital city amid the coronavirus pandemic. The donations from Changsha, China, were first offered to Annapolis city officials in April, when the need for the masks among public safety workers was high in the beginning of the pandemic, Annapolis City Manager David Jarrell said in a news release Tuesday. They arrived this month, with one of the boxes featuring strikers of American and Chinese flags with a message that read: “Go, City of Annapolis! Best Wishes from Changsha! True unity inspires people to work as one to overcome adversity,” The Capital Gazette reported.Another note from Yani Xia, a representative in the Chinese city’s Foreign Affairs Office, accompanied the shipments. “We sincerely wish you and everyone in Annapolis continued good health, and the fortitude to persevere during this challenging period,” Xia’s note read.Annapolis’ relationship with Changsha began under a former city administrator, according to the release. The two municipalities are now sister cities. 1106

America's largest group of child doctors updated its guidance on cloth face coverings for kids in sports to cover competition on Friday and now recommend youth athletes wear cloth face masks during games. The American Academy of Pediatrics' previous recommendation suggested they wear masks on the sidelines, in between drills, or when entering or leaving the field. In addition to wearing masks during games, the AAP also suggests that practices are kept small and teams do not mix with other teams or coaches. The AAP added that face coverings can be removed when participating in swimming, or where they could become a choking hazard or impair vision like in cheerleading, gymnastics, or wrestling. 706

As Christmas approaches, Target is extending its store hours for holiday shoppers. On its website in its FAQ section, Target said most of its stores would open at 7 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. leading up to the holiday. But on Christmas Eve, stores will close at 8 p.m. Target is closed on Christmas Day.The retail store says hours can vary, so check the store locator before you head out.The company also announced that special hours for seniors and at-risk shoppers have also changed.According to Target, stores will open an hour early, but only on Tuesdays. Target added that if there are no "vulnerable guests" waiting to shop, the store could open to everyone, but that's being left up to the store leaders. 716
