Known as the Green Mountain State, Vermont’s bucolic natural beauty offers a sharp contrast to the reality facing some of its residents.“The room you're in here would be busy all day,” said Gary De Carolis, executive director of the Turning Point Center in Burlington, the state’s largest city.Normally, 3,000 people would come to that addiction treatment center each month.“Then, the pandemic hit and, of course, everything just went; everyone just retreated to their homes,” De Carolis said. “And we know that the enemy of recovery is isolation.”The most recent stats available from the state’s Department of Health, from April, show Vermont had 47 opioid-related deaths, which is an increase over the 38 overdose deaths seen at the same time last year.In addition, compared to April of last year, the rate of nonfatal opioid overdoses doubled from 14 percent to 36 percent.Nationwide, the American Medical Association said nearly 40 states have seen spikes in opioid overdoses since the pandemic began.“There is no question that the current COVID pandemic does increase risk factors that we know, even in typical times, are risk factors for overdose, more drug use,” said Dr. Patrice Harris of the American Medical Association. Those risk factors included not having regular access to health care providers and a disconnect from normal routine and community, especially when in-person addiction treatment centers closed all over the country. That’s where telehealth stepped in, up to a point.“However, let's note there that if you didn't have a data plan or phone or computer or access to even broadband, then you weren't able to take advantage of that,” Dr. Harris said.Back in Burlington, via phone calls or Zoom meetings, the Turning Point Center is seeing about 500 clients a month, a fraction of what they would normally see, but no less needed.“Until we have a vaccine, I don't think it'll ever be business as usual,” De Carolis said. “One day at a time, as they say.” 1983

James "Whitey" Bulger, the notorious and much-feared former Boston mob boss, was killed Tuesday morning at the United States Penitentiary Hazelton in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia.Bulger, 89, who had eluded federal authorities for more than 16 years before his arrest in June 2011, was serving the rest of his life in prison for a litany of crimes, including his role in 11 murders. He was sentenced in November 2013 to two life terms plus five years for his role as architect of a criminal enterprise that, in the words of a federal judge, committed "unfathomable" acts that terrorized a city. 601

JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - Some fire victims in Jamul are bracing for a potential power shutoff and more fire danger as the Santa Ana winds move in.A charred landscape marks what was once a picturesque Hidden Haven Farms. Co-owner Ryan Skidmore says his family got the call from SDG&E on Tuesday night, warning of a potential shutoff."Honestly it is was, 'here we go again.' We just got done with this," said Skidmore.Back in September, the Valley Fire decimated the 16-year-old farm known for sustainable farming. The Skidmores lost most of their crops and irrigation lines, along with 125 chickens. The family had tried to get wildfire insurance but was denied, partly because the farm is in a wildfire-prone area. Their total loss was more than 0,000.While several buildings were destroyed, seven others are still standing, including two homes. When the winds pick up, Skidmore will worry."There's flammable material on adjacent properties, and it could always come onto our property and burn what didn’t burn the first time," said Skidmore.Skidmore spent Wednesday hand trimming brush near structures. He'll also be checking his backup power sources, in case the power is shut off. Without power, they can't pump water from their wells."We have three different generators. A big one for the main house and smaller ones for tools and outbuildings," said Skidmore. With their power plans in place, Skidmore says they will settle in and brace for the wind."It's nerve-racking. The wind is so unpredictable," said Skidmore.Since the fires, neighbors have volunteered for cleanups and donated chickens and supplies. Skidmore says they are optimistic about their rebuild if they can avoid any more fires. 1711

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Miss. – Three men have been arrested in connection with the murder of an off-duty officer state trooper.Mississippi Highway Patrol says 58-year-old Troy Morris was found fatally shot in a vehicle on US 61 in Jefferson County early Friday morning. There were reportedly no signs of theft from the vehicle.Morris was a 27-year veteran and a lieutenant with MHP.Along with being trooper, Morris also worked as a highway contract driver with Blackwell Hauling Inc, which has a contract with the U.S. Postal Service to transport mail between USPS facilities. Officials say he was found in the commercial truck that he used to transport mail.“This is a sad day for law enforcement, the Mississippi Highway Patrol, and the State of Mississippi. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Lieutenant Troy Morris. Local, state, and federal agents will work tirelessly to ensure justice,” said Commissioner Sean Tindell.Saturday, MHP announced that Treyon Washington, 24, was taken into custody in Jefferson County and has been charged with Morris’ murder. He’s being held in the Jefferson County Detention Facility with no bond.Meanwhile, Cdarrius Norman, 17, and Damion Whittley, 25, were arrested in New Orleans. Both of them have also been charged with murder and are awaiting extradition to Mississippi.“While we are pleased with the progress of this investigation, we realize there is much work left to be done,” said Colonel Randy Ginn. “The tireless efforts of law enforcement has been inspiring and the public outpouring of support and concern has touched us all and has shown Lieutenant Morris’ family that Mississippians truly care about the officers who protect them.”Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly said Morris worked for the U.S. Postal Service, when he is actually a contract worker who was transporting mail for Blackwell Hauling Inc, according to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. 1948
