ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - A charter bus collided with a tree near an East County school Friday, injuring students with shattered glass.The bus collided with a tree next to Joan MacQueen Middle School in Alpine just before 5 p.m. There were at least 43 children on the bus, according to California Highway Patrol officer Mary Bailey. Some of the students were injured by shattered glass.It's not clear how the bus crashed.10News is monitoring this story: 469

(KGTV) - For some students in Alpine, the first week of school has meant distance learning pods inside a school, hosted by their school district.Like for so many kids, the switch to distance learning in March was tough for 8-year-old Ashlyn, according to her mother Stephanie Green."She thrives more when she's with her peers. One-on-one with me and her just didn't really work as well," said Green.So when distance learning was mandated to begin the school year, there was disappointment, and then came a different reaction."I thought thought it was great. It was really innovative," said Green.Photos sent to ABC 10News reveal what the first week of school looked like for nearly 100 students in the Alpine Union School District. Inside one school gym, there was a distance learning pod with Ashlyn and seven other kids, in the 1st, 3rd and 4th grades. Set up by the district, the pods are being held on school grounds. Students are separated by plexiglass dividers. A substitute teacher is on hand to guide them through the process. Parents in the pods take shifts supervising the kids, making sure they get breaks outside.About half of the learning pods are within their before-and-after-school care programs, expanded into a 10-and-a-half hour days."The learning pods are a good way to have a bit normalcy to begin the school year," said Green.Despite initial concerns, the county officials tells ABC 10News the district-hosted learning pods do fall within the latest state guidelines.District superintendent rich Newman says they launched the program to address challenges their families were facing with distance learning, from internet access and social isolation to distractions and parents' work schedules."The number one feedback is 'Thank you. Thank you for thinking of us, for giving kids a safe place to learn. And thank you for letting us go back to work,'" said Newman.With the county giving schools to open for in-person instruction next week, Newman says they are working on a hybrid option for their K-to-8 classes, before transitioning to an in-person learning model option. 2117

After asking for coronavirus-related deadline extensions in April, the Trump administration now appears to be abandoning that request by asking Congress for extra funding to wrap up the 2020 census “as quickly, and safely as possible” in a move that could help ensure the number-crunching for redrawing congressional districts takes place on President Donald Trump’s watch.Census Bureau officials had warned as recently as early July that it was already too late to have the numbers ready without an extension. And outside experts predicted Tuesday that speeding up the timetable would lead to an inaccurate head count that misses people in hard-to-count minority communities.“It would be like giving an expectant mother in the early stages of pregnancy a lot of money to have the baby in 4.5 months,” said John Thompson, a former Census Bureau director in the Obama administration.The Census Bureau is in the middle of the 2020 census, and some of the bureau’s 500,000 door-knockers started heading out this month to households that haven’t yet answered the questionnaire.With the new coronavirus disrupting census operations in April, the Trump administration asked Congress to extend the deadlines required for the U.S. Census Bureau to turn in the head count data used for redrawing congressional district and legislative districts. The Census Bureau also postponed finishing field operations for the 2020 census from the end of July to the end of October.The Democratic-controlled House agreed to the extensions as part of coronavirus-relief legislation, but the Republican-controlled Senate has yet to do so. Senate Republicans on Monday instead proposed an additional 8 million in funding for the 2020 census in its coronavirus-relief bill.“This funding would allow for additional hiring, staffing resources, and replenished contingency funding to provide schedule flexibility as the Census Bureau conducts its largest field operation, nonresponse followup,” the Census Bureau said Monday on its website. “This flexibility is critical to helping the Census Bureau operate in the midst of unprecedented public health crisis, including trying to wrap up field data collection as quickly, and safely as possible, while ensuring a complete and accurate count. “When asked about the status of the deadlines request, the office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell referred to existing policy for the census timeline and said it had nothing further to add.Historically, the Census Bureau is required to turn over numbers for apportionment, the process of divvying up congressional seats, by Dec. 31, and the numbers used for redrawing legislative districts by March 30.
