SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- King tides are expected to continue in San Diego on Sunday following a day of flooding in parts of the county Saturday. High tide is set to happen at 9 a.m. with low tide set to take place around 4:10 p.m., according to tide charts. King tides occur when there is an alignment of the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon. RELATED: Sandbags available in San Diego CountySome parts of Imperial Beach already experienced tidal flooding Friday morning as several homeowners reported water entered their homes. The City of San Diego built a three-foot temporary berm along parts of the bay in Mission Beach to help mitigate the risk of coastal flooding. Residents can also check the likelihood of flooding in their area, via FEMA's flood map, here. The next round of king tides are expected to roll in January 20 an 21. 847

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine is approved this week, UC San Diego Health anticipates receiving its first allocation of the vaccine next week. The vaccine will be considered on Thursday by the Food and Drug Administration. Once it receives the vaccine, UC San Diego Health says its first vaccinations could occur shortly after."Assuming the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issues an Emergency Use Authorization tomorrow or Friday, we would anticipate arrival of the first allocation of the Pfizer vaccine to UC San Diego Health next week, with the first vaccinations occurring shortly thereafter," a statement from the hospital system said. RELATED: What phased vaccine distribution will look like in San Diego CountyThe hospital system says the process of receiving and distributing the vaccine remains fluid and details still need to be finalized.Who will receive the vaccine first will be based on the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which recommends health care workers receive the vaccination first, along with residents and workers of nursing homes and long-term care facilities.RELATED: What the FDA's review reveals about Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccinePrioritization of who in those first groups receives a vaccination first will also depend on doses available. But those health care workers who face the greatest exposure to COVID-19 patients will be prioritized. This week, an outside group of vaccine experts will advise the FDA and vote on whether to recommend an emergency use authorization for the drug.FDA scientists independently confirmed Pfizer’s claim that its vaccine is 95% effective after two doses and said they found no serious safety concerns, according to documents released Tuesday.Upon approval, California is set to receive 327,000 doses of the vaccine in the first round of allocation. Of those San Diego County is scheduled to receive 28,275 doses. The second round of vaccine allocation is expected within 3-4 weeks. 1991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jessica Mattly was all smiles Thursday, ironically, thanks to the state Employment Development Department.“For the first time they called me,” she said. “I didn't call them. It was great.”A representative from the EDD, which issues unemployment insurance payments, called Mattly to tell her that they finally processed her application for jobless benefits. They’d begin by sending her four weeks of backpay.Mattly’s had been trying to get through to the EDD since she lost her job at a San Diego resort in late March, when Coronavirus restrictions went into effect. She filed for unemployment immediately, but like thousands of other San Diegans, got a request from the EDD for identity verification. She submitted the necessary documents, but never heard anything back.“I would just keep dialing, and keep dialing, and keep dialing, and I understand the definition of insanity. I do. And it felt like that was my only option,” she said.Mattly kept running into walls, until she turned to State Sen. Ben Hueso’s office, which contacted the EDD on her behalf. That lead to Thursday's phone call.Others, like Audee Kammer - just wouldn't take no for an answer. The EDD denied her identity documentation twice. She called hundreds of times - finally appealing the denials and getting a telephone hearing with a judge, who authorized payments.“I could see how some people, it could just throw them into deep depression and despair,” she said. “I feel for a lot of people out there that are in my same situation that I was and don't have the drive to keep knocking on that door.”Meanwhile, the latest state numbers show more than 230,000 San Diego County residents are unemployed. The EDD says its funding has increased drastically since the pandemic began and is now undertaking a massive hiring effort. It has filled 900 new positions to process an unprecedented amount of claims - with an additional 1,900 openings.Sen. Hueso represents the 40th Senate District, which includes portions of the County of San Diego and all of Imperial County. If you don't reside in District 40, you should contact your elected representatives for your area. To find your representative, click here. 2201
