Life in rural America comes with its challenges, and those challenges are highlighted during election season.Sam Van Wetter, a resident of the small town of Boulder, Utah, knows it. So, he works to make sure the voices of this tiny community aren’t lost in the massive landscape of southern Utah.“I think our voting system is designed to favor people who live in metropolitan areas, and on their way home, just walk a block or two to a polling place to cast their ballot there," he explained of America’s current methods of voting.Van Wetter works with the Rural Utah Project, which helps ensure those living off the beaten path have the same options as the rest of America.On a typical election day in Boulder, the only polling location in Garfield County is hours away."You have to drive two-and-a-half hours to the west to county seat, where you can vote in a courthouse," explained Van Wetter.The seclusion of life in this part of America makes voting by mail the preferred option.In fact, all of Utah has voted by mail since 2018. That year, the state saw midterm voter turnout rose by 52 percent.As many parts of America worry if the United States Postal Service (USPS) can handle all the ballots, Van Wetter fears in the most rural corners of the country, there is a larger room for error."You have to work in advance and be proactive to get your ballot in," he said.For those who worry a ballot could be lost or won’t arrive in time, they could be out of luck.“I don’t trust it. I think the votes can be screwed up big time when they all get counted so I don’t like it," said resident Larry Ripplinger, who has called Boulder home for decades.The only place to turn in your ballot by hand or vote in person is at the Garfield County Clerk’s Office, which is about a two-hour drive.“If you’re working, or maybe you’re an older person who doesn’t feel comfortable making that drive, it just means you don’t get your ballot turned in, and that’s happened more often than you like to hear about," said Boulder resident Peg Smith.The USPS is recommending voters nationwide turn ballots in at least a week before the election deadline.Van Wetter, along with The Rural Utah Project, wants local leaders to provide ballot drop boxes across Garfield County."It would enable us to drop off the ballot a day or two before the election," he said.Garfield County Clerk Camille Moore says the drop boxes likely won't happen for the election in the fall, citing confidence in years of mail-in voting. She also said Boulder is "quite a ways over there.""I think in America, there are too many barriers to vote, and living in rural places gives you a few more barriers," Van Wetter said.The distance that surrounds towns like Boulder is what Van Wetter is working to make sure isn’t an obstacle in taking part in the most American of duties."There are many different ways to live as an American, and we need systems that account for everyone and don’t leave anyone without a vote in the dark," he said. 3001

LA MESA, Calif. (CNS) - Three people armed with handguns shot at a business and a vehicle in La Mesa, but no one was struck by the gunfire, police said Wednesday.The shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday on El Cajon Boulevard just west of Parks Avenue, La Mesa police Lt. Brian Stoney said.The target of the shooting was an occupied business in a strip mall, Stoney said. The business' front window was shattered by the gunfire. The lieutenant did not disclose the name of the business."This appears to be an isolated incident," Stoney said Tuesday. "And although the suspects should be considered armed and dangerous, we do not believe there is any further threat in this immediate area right now."At least four men were inside the business when officer arrived, but were uninjured, the lieutenant said, adding that the men were detained for questioning.Officers spotted a vehicle driving away from the business with several bullet holes in its windshield, he said. Officers stopped the vehicle and also detained its two occupants, both men, for questioning.Witnesses told police they saw three people armed with handguns open fire on the business and the vehicle before fleeing in a vehicle, described only as a dark SUV, Stoney said. LAKELAND, Fla. -- A Florida bus attendant has been arrested for child abuse, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Deputies say Brenda Nelson, 65, of Polk City has been charged with one count of child abuse for reportedly striking a special needs child on a school bus. On Wednesday, November 8 at about 4:23 p.m. the Transportation Safety Specialist told deputies a citizen complaint was received from a witness who reported she saw a bus attendant strike a female student on the head. The witness was not riding the bus. The witness advised officials that the incident took place on Wednesday, November 8 at approximately 3:58 p.m. The bus transports special needs children from the Doris Sanders Learning Center in Lakeland to their homes throughout Polk County, according to the Sheriff's Office. Deputies reviewed video footage that shows Nelson attempting to help a special needs child off of the bus. In the video, deputies say the victim was strapped to her seat by a "Houdini Harness" which is designed to significantly restrict her movement and mobility. At about 3:58 p.m., Brenda Nelson is seen on video walking by the victim and hitting her on the top of her head with an open left hand and saying "I'm gonna slap that tongue out of your mouth when I get up there."Two minutes later, the video shows Nelson walk behind the victim's seat, grab the victim by her hair and violently shake the victim's head back and forth and to the side, approximately four times. Deputies say after shaking the victim's head, Nelson was seen pulling something behind the victim's seat in an effort to tighten her harness. The victim attempted to reach behind her seat in the direction of Nelson and Nelson slapped the victim on the hand twice, according to the affidavit. According to the arrest affidavit, Nelson told the bus driver, Bradley Mckean, to take the victim home first, changing the regular bus route. Nelson was seen sitting next to the victim for the remainder of the bus ride and it appeared as if she was attempting to push the victim down into the seat to further limit her mobility. Deputies interviewed Nelson the following day. Nelson told deputies she did not remember hitting the victim on the head. She told deputies she was trying to get another child off the school bus and the victim kept on beating on the window and trying to get up out of her seat. Deputies did not observe the victim beating on the window of the school bus or acting in a disruptive manner as described by Nelson. Brenda stated, "I guess I done it. I didn't remember hitting her." Brenda also stated, "I must have just lost it. I don't remember doing that. I would never hit one of those kids."Brenda Nelson was arrested and transported to Polk County Jail.Due to the Veterans Day holiday, the Sheriff's Office does not have access to the video mentioned in the affidavit. The Polk County School Board released the following statement:  3005

(KGTV) -- The man caught on video being arrested outside a La Mesa trolley stop has filed a lawsuit against the City of La Mesa.The lawsuit was filed by Amaurie Johnson against the City of La Mesa, Matt Dages, and six John Does.The lawsuit alleges arrest without a probable cause, negligence, excessive force, and violence because of race.The suit comes after viral video showed Johnson’s controversial arrest outside a La Mesa trolley stop in June. In the video, an officer is seen pushing Johnson into a sitting position on a bench.
