NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday urged all parties to seize "new opportunities" to find a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi made the remarks in a meeting on Iran with his counterparts from the United States, Russia, Britain, France and Germany in New York."At present, there are new opportunities in advancing the diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue," Yang said."All parties should use the positive elements in the current circumstances to further enhance diplomatic efforts so as to push the Iranian nuclear issue back to the track of dialogue."Yang said that China will continue to play a "constructive role " in the international community's effort to find "a comprehensive, lasting and fair" solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.A statement issued after the foreign ministers' meeting called for an "early negotiated solution" to the Iranian nuclear issue. The foreign ministers are "ready to engage with Iran," the statement said. The six-nation ministerial meeting on Iran was held on the sidelines of a UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A public supervision scheme for China's prosecutors will be rolled out nationwide next month, a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader said Tuesday.A pilot public supervisor scheme, which started six years ago, had proved effective in supervising judicial departments, said Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, at a meeting in Beijing. From next month, the measure would be formally adopted nationwide, he said.More work should be done to improve the selection and management of public supervisors and to draft regulations, he said.Government departments, non-governmental organizations, state-owned enterprises and communities could nominate members of the public as supervisors to the procuratorates. The public supervisors would give opinions to procuratorates when prosecutors decided to drop corruption charges, or when a suspect in the corruption case complained about the arrest. They could also oversee the actions of prosecutors, to prevent illegal detentions, obtaining confessions through violence and torture, and illegal collection of evidence.A report by the Supreme People's Procuratorate to the National People's Congress in March 2008 said about 86 percent of procuratorates had taken part in the trial. At the meeting, Zhou admitted that the country still faced a tough task in judicial reform. The government would work out new policies to attract more prosecutors and judges to work in local judicial departments, he said.

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The United States has repeatedly blocked investment from Chinese companies on national security grounds, a protectionist move that will only harm its own interests, analysts say.Eight U.S. congressmen recently asked the Obama administration to scrutinize a deal between Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei and the American operator Sprint Nextel on national security grounds. It was not the first time Huawei's attempts to break into the U.S. market have been stymied. Earlier its buyout attempt of 3Com was summarily dismissed by the U.S. government.Citing national security concerns again, a bipartisan group of 50 lawmakers in July requested that the government investigate an investment project of China's Anshan Iron and Steel Group (Ansteel), China's fourth largest steelmaker, which plans to establish a joint rebar venture with a U.S. partner in Mississippi."It is inappropriate for some U.S. lawmakers to label regular business behavior as a move that threatens national security," Yao Jian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, recently said about Ansteel's investment plan."I hope the United States can create a better investment environment for Chinese enterprises," he said.Chinese analysts said the actions were sheer protectionism, adding that national security concerns is only a lame excuse by U.S. authorities, whose true intention is to protect the interests of domestic enterprises and industries. Moreover, standing up to China's allegedly unfair trade practices can easily earn the congressmen much needed political chips in the upcoming mid-term election in November, the analysts said. The setback that Huawei and Ansteel suffered is only the tip of the iceberg. Actually, blocking investment from Chinese companies in the name of national security has morphed into a knee-jerk reaction that could only harm America's own interests.Emcore Corporation, a U.S. fiber optics producer, announced in late June that it has abandoned a joint venture in partnership with China's Tangshan Caofeidian Investment Corporation because the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States "has certain regulatory concerns about the transaction."

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety supervisor will soon launch a nationwide inspection campaign on coal mines to crack down on illegal mining and prevent deadly accidents.A spokesman of the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) said Sunday the campaign, which starts on Oct. 10 and lasts until Nov. 30, will check whether accident-prone small coal mines of outdated capacity have been shut down according to state policies.Technological upgrades, merger and acquisition of coal mines will also be examined during the campaign, the spokesman said.According to the SAWS, 1,539 small coal mines of outdated capacity have to be closed in China this year to meet the country's carbon dioxide emission and pollution-reduction requirements.China's annual fatalities at coal mines had dropped from a peak of 6,995 deaths in 2002 to 2,631 in 2009, according to data from the SAWS.Six people were killed and 12 were injured in a coal mine gas outburst Sunday in southwest China's Guizhou Province, a spokesman with the provincial work safety bureau said. The accident occurred at around 1:20 a.m. Sunday in Xinglong Coal Mine in Tongzi County, Zunyi City of Guizhou, said the spokesman.Thirty-five people were working in the mine when the accident happened. Twenty-two people escaped, and another 12 were rescued. One worker missing was later found dead in the mine, and five died when being taken to hospital.
