All national forests in California will close Wednesday evening as the state sees “explosive growth of fires throughout” the state.The U.S. Forest Service closed eight national forests in Southern California Monday night, and the rapid growth Tuesday in windy weather conditions led to the decision to close the remaining ten forest areas.Nearly 2.3 million acres have burned already this year, setting a state record. Roughly two dozen wildfires are burning currently. “The number of large fires and extreme fire behavior we are seeing across the State is historic," said Regional Forester Randy Moore in a release. "These temporary closures are necessary to protect the public and our firefighters, and we will keep them in place until conditions improve and we are confident that National Forest visitors can recreate safely.”More than 140 people had to be rescued from the path of the Creek Fire this week, some were hikers and campers trapped without a way to escape the rapidly spreading flames. The Creek Fire is burning in part of the Sierra National Forest, which was closed to visitors on Monday.The Forest Service manages 18 National Forests in California, which take up almost 20 million acres. A 6th-grade student at Dr. David L. Anderson Middle School in Martin County, Florida has been charged with a misdemeanor after he simulated a shooting, pretending to have a semi-automatic weapon.The Martin County Sheriff's Office said students told teachers that the 6th-grade student allegedly said he had a gun for protection. A school resource officer searched the student and his backpack and did not find a weapon. The child was allowed back to class, but a deputy said, in class, the student put his hands up as if he was firing a semi-automatic weapon and began to make pop noises. The Martin County Sheriff's Office was called out to the school and the student was arrested for disrupting a school function. He is charged with a misdemeanor. No weapon was found. Parents were notified that there was an incident."It was very unnerving and disturbing and once again it's the kids that are suffering and it freaked me out after dropping off my son today, giving him a kiss and knowing how the other parents feel about yesterday and that the kids aren't here. A woman has been arrested after allegedly trying to suffocate her 7-month-old son.Authorities said they took 23-year-old Jennifer Sandor, of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, into custody and charged her with attempted criminal homicide after she allegedly tried to suffocate her son, who was a patient at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.Sandor had taken her baby to the hospital for unexplained medical episodes that left the child blue and limp.On Friday, staff at the hospital said they witnessed Sandor use her hands to cover her son’s mouth and nose, preventing the baby from breathing.Reports stated the child was in obvious distress. They added he was struggling to free himself.Authorities said Sandor released the child only after staff intervened.         Sandor was being held in lieu of a 0,000 bond. 860

After briefly becoming a Category 2 storm on Monday, Hurricane Sally weakened back to a Category 1 storm overnight as it threatens to swamp Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle.In its 8 p.m. CT update, the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday that Sally currently has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and is currently moving toward the Mississippi and Alabama shores at 2 mph.The NHC said the hurricane is about 70 miles south of Mobile, Alabama, and 70 miles southwest of Pensacola, Florida.At 9 p.m. CT, a sustained wind of 58 mph with a gust of 73 mph was reported at Petit Bois Island, Mississippi, the NHC said.The overnight weakening is a welcome sign to forecasters. On Monday evening, NHC forecasted that Sally could produce winds of up to 110 mph before it made landfall.NHC warned that even though the storm slowed down, it will still produce a "life-threatening" storm surge in the central Gulf Coast region of the U.S. The NHC says "historic" flash flooding is possible as it makes landfall.The agency expects the Alabama coast to see the most flooding, including Mobile Bay.Hurricane conditions are expected as early as Tuesday, and the storm is currently projected to make landfall by Wednesday morning. 1239
