LHASA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed in a strong earthquake that jolted a county near Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on Monday, the rescue headquarters confirmed early Tuesday morning.     The previous "at least 30" death toll was inaccurate due to unauthoritative sources and needs further check.     Rescuers arrived at Yangyi Village, the worst-hit site in Gedar Township of Damxung County, late Monday night after repairing the road once paralyzed in the 6.6-magnitude tremor.     At least 147 houses in Yangyi and villages in a neighboring county collapsed. Rescuers recovered nine bodies from the debris, and 11 people were seriously injured while eight others received light injuries, Hao Peng, deputy chairman of the autonomous regional government and head of the rescue command, told Xinhua.     More than 600 soldiers, police officers, firefighters, traffic, medical and geological experts were rushing to the quake zone.     Food, drinking water, tents and other materials had been transported to the area. Rescue operation was underway. The injured were being sent to local hospitals.     An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung,82 km from Lhasa, at 4:30 p.m. Monday. BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- A preliminary investigation confirmed the contaminated Sanlu baby milk powder as the cause of kidney stones in infants after a first-phase probe by experts, China's Ministry of Health said here on Friday.    An investigation team jointly organized by departments including the health, public security, agriculture ministries and quality watchdog examined the urine and kidney stones of the infant patients and found the substance melamine therein.     The investigation team, which is in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, where dairy producer Sanlu Group is based, is now coordinating with the local government to investigate the incident.     "Those responsible for the contaminated milk will face severe punishment," said an official with the team.     The team arrived in Hebei on Friday. After listening to the local government's report on its handling of the incident, they collected samples and documents from the Sanlu Group and the local quality testing agency. They also visited the affected babies in local hospitals and gave advice on the treatment.     Sanlu, one of China's leading dairy producers, found during an internal company investigation in August its powdered milk products were contaminated with melamine, according to the team's investigation. It is widely used in manufacturing fabric, glue, housewares and flame retardants.     "The substance gives the appearance of a high nitrogen level, which is an index to measure the protein content in food," a health expert told Xinhua. He declined to be named.     One baby in the northwest Gansu province died from the stones. At least 59 cases had been reported in Gansu and other provinces.     Sanlu had sealed off 2,176 tons of contaminated milk powder and recalled 8,210 tonnes from the market. There were still 700 tonnes in circulation. All the contaminated formula was produced before Aug. 6.     Supermarkets in some provinces had started to pull the milk powder off shelves.     The Health Ministry said on Friday it had launched a nationwide investigation into the contaminated milk formula. All local health agencies were to report cases of infants with kidney stones immediately. It also issued a treatment plan on its website (www.moh.gov.cn) to help hospitals deal with sick babies.

KUNMING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines (CEA) will offer compensation of up to 400 yuan (57 U.S. dollars) to passengers affected in flights where pilots deliberately turned their aircraft around.     Passengers whose flights were canceled will get 400 yuan compensation. Those delayed within two hours of departure and without accommodation would get 100 yuan. Those delayed within eight hours of departure would get 200 yuan, said an official with the Yunnan branch of the carrier on Tuesday.     The compensation was set according to a guideline notice released by the general Administration of Civil Aviation, the official said.     From March 31 to April 1, 21 flights returned to their departure points in Yunnan Province, in southwestern China, leaving more than 1,000 passengers stranded at Kunming Airport, the capital of Yunnan.     "The time and energy we have wasted could never be compensated by 400 yuan," said Yu Xiaoyan, a tourist from the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     Yu planned to take the MU5793 flight at 9:50 a.m. on March 31 from Kunming to Xishuangbanna. The plane never came after waiting for seven hours at the airport.     She was offered a ticket change at 4 p.m. on April 1 and received 400 yuan compensation.     CEA finally admitted on Monday that some pilots on the 21 flights deliberately turned their aircraft around while in flight.     It originally said the incidents were due to poor weather. However flights with other airlines flying the same routes landed on schedule during the same period.     The airline has suspended the pilots. Further probing is underway, said an announcement on the company's website.
