SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — North County residents have banded together to help a woman who was living in her van with hundreds of pet rats and nowhere to turn.Locals were first alerted to the woman's situation outside a Del Mar convenience store, where she works. Carla was recently living in her van with two pet rats after becoming homeless, neighbor Kimberly Jackson told 10News reporter Rachel Bianco. The two rats had babies and the situation grew out of hand. The rodents eventually totaled more than 300. The animals chewed through the wiring of the van, rendering it inoperable."Everywhere, there was not one place in the van where they had not gotten into, the wiring, the engine, they came and went from the engine area," San Diego Humane Society officer Danee Cook said. "She was extremely helpful during the entire process as well. She did love her pets, she just let it get out of hand and she became overwhelmed."Video of the rats scurrying across the van's dashboard surfaced on NextDoor, catching the attention of neighbors like Jackson. "She said, "are you here to ridicule me, like everybody else," Jackson told 10News. "I saw what was going on in there, and said, 'how can we help you?' There were like 300 rats in that van." That's when Jackson and other neighbors stepped in, helping Carla tow her van from the parking lot. The San Diego Humane Society then removed the rats, which are healthy and now up for adoption.The acts of kindness have gone even further to help Carla. Neighbors set up a GoFundMe account that has raised nearly ,000 for Carla. Another neighbor donated a car. They're also helping connect her to homelessness resources and housing."She's just a gentle, gentle person, nobody knew she was homeless," Jackson said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police have identified the woman shot and killed, allegedly by her boyfriend, at a Point Loma strip mall earlier this month.San Diego Police said 20-year-old Octavia Williams of Phoenix, Ariz., was fatally shot in the parking lot at 4013 W. Point Loma Blvd. just before midnight on Oct. 9.Paramedics transported Williams to the hospital where she died.MAP: Track crime happening in San Diego CountyPolice identified Williams' killer as 41-year-old Joe Bennette Conway. Conway is believed to be Williams' boyfriend, according to City News Service, and the shooting took place after an argument.Conway was described as 5’7” tall and 150 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More and more local high school students are slashing college tuition costs, free of charge.From the cheer squad to the lacrosse team, junior Katie Quis' schedule at Rancho Bernardo High is packed. That's not counting her Tuesdays and Thursday, when she heads to Miramar College for a calculus class.The class is her third at Miramar College since last summer; part of the dual enrollment program which offers college-credit classes to high school students at no cost. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of four teenagers accused of fatally beating a man near Petco Park was charged Tuesday with murder and torture.San Diego Police said Dominick Wells, 19, and three juvenile females aged 14, 15 and 17 attacked Edward Starland near a bridge behind the ballpark the afternoon of Nov. 18.Witnesses said Starland had been fighting with the group before he was thrown to the ground and beaten. The group ran off down Imperial Avenue. Starland’s sister Catherine flew to San Diego from Florida to be by his side when he was on life support in the hospital. She said her brother had a heart condition and a pacemaker, and didn’t know why anyone would attack him."I came here for my brother because I don't want him to be alone. I want him to know I'm by his side; when he wakes up he knows I'm here,” she said. Starland, 56, died of his injuries Dec. 3.Police later arrested the teens. Wells is currently being held on a first-degree murder charge at San Diego Central Jail. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Monday, community leaders demanded reforms following the release of body camera video showing San Diego police officers shooting a robbery suspect over the weekend.Monday, SDPD said he was in the ICU with life-threatening injuries.“I'm asking for SDPD to put an aggressive plan together to ensure that [with] any officer-involved shooting that within 48 hours to 72 hours a video from the body worn camera footage is released,” said Rev. Shane Harris with the People’s Alliance for Justice.Body camera video released on Sunday by SDPD shows the moment leading up to Saturday's shooting. Police said they were patrolling Downtown when they saw Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra in a red jumpsuit and recognized he was wanted for a robbery.From a street camera, Ibarra is seen reaching in his waistband and raising his arms toward officers. Under Ibarra, body camera footage shows what police said was a gun wrapped in a bandana.“They went in guns blazing and this is not the training that they have,” said community activist Tasha Williamson on Monday. She added that the police should have called for back-up before the confrontation.“People are saying he pointed the gun at the officer and we're simply saying how is that because the officer on video show him running sideways behind the suspect to a cover which was the vehicle,” she said.“They used verbal commands. They followed what their training is and they did an exceptional job,” said former SWAT commander and lethal force instructor Ray Shay when he spoke to ABC10 News on Sunday.“It's unfortunate the gentleman was shot but you'll see that the police officer- after shooting the suspect and getting him handcuffed- immediately calls for an ambulance and here are these two young officers doing CPR to try to save the life of the man who just tried to kill them,” he added.Activists are now urging SDPD to release videos of future shootings as quickly as they did they this time and to release videos before still images.“We want a whole perspective of a situation. Not a half-perspective,” added Harris.Harris also wants the DA’s Office to form a special unit to investigative police misconduct and officer shootings.
