SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's rattlesnake season year-round in San Diego but now is the time they come out in full force due to warmer temperatures.San Diego Animal Services says the number of urban sightings this April is higher than this time last year, 94 versus 87. However, for the whole year, sightings are down compared to 2017.Rangers at the Mission Trails Regional Park say hikers should not panic if they see a rattlesnake on the trail. They even recommend taking a picture if you're a safe distance away.RELATED: What to do in the event of a rattlesnake biteRattlesnakes common throughout Mission Trails are the Southern Pacific and Red Diamond. Each can be several feet long and can strike about half their body length.Hiker and volunteer guide Daryel Stager recently spotted a five-foot Red Diamond rattlesnake eating a possum."I thought it was pretty cool, I don't usually see them with prey they've killed," said Stager. "They want to be left alone and get some rays - like going to the beach."Experts recommend keeping dogs leashed so that they do not startle a rattlesnake off the trail.  1112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a statement, the City of San Diego says it wasn't given enough time ahead of the July 4 weekend to close beach parking lots.Friday, California Office of Emergency Services sent a letter to city managers in the county asking them to close their beach parking lots ahead of the weekend. The letter was sent to officials in San Diego, Imperial Beach, Coronado, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside."At the time of writing, beaches under the jurisdiction of local governments within San Diego County are the only beaches without visitation restrictions throughout all of Southern California, and therefore are attracting thousands of residents from outside your coastal communities and creating significant potential for disease transmission, particularly in crowded restaurants, bars, retail, and hotels," the letter stated. "... To protect the public health of San Diegans and reduce the high potential transmission of this deadly disease in San Diego coastal businesses, we write to request that municipal governments do not open beach parking lots for the July 4th holiday weekend."RELATED: Crowds flock to San Diego beaches for Fourth of July weekendOceanside announced it would close beach parking lots on Thursday, while Carlsbad said late Friday that it would do the same. California also said Friday that state beach parking lots would be closed this weekend. Carlsbad said they were closing parking lots in anticipation of people traveling to San Diego for the weekend. Surrounding counties Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, and Santa Barbara have closed beaches this weekend.City of San Diego Chief Operating Officer Kris Michell said in a statement to City News Service that San Diego wasn't given enough time to put a beach parking closure in place."The city of San Diego is closely following county guidance and working with health officials to encourage adherence to public health regulations," Michell said. "The request to regional coastal cities to close beach parking lots on the Fourth of July came last night just a few hours before the start of the holiday, leaving little time to enact, enforce or notify the public.RELATED: Carlsbad closes beach parking lots for holiday weekend"San Diego continues to require facial coverings and physical distancing at all locations, and this week voluntarily implemented restrictions on bars and restaurants to limit the spread of COVID-19," Michell said. "As we have since the beginning of the pandemic, we will continue to work with county and state health officials to protect public health and safety."Imperial Beach, Coronado, Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Encinitas officials said Saturday their beach parking lots remained open Saturday.Friday, several beaches were already seeing crowds for the holiday weekend. Many people claimed their spots early at Mission Beach and Oceanside.RELATED: Hotels, campgrounds have vacancies over holiday weekendWhile some were able to keep their distance from one another, many did not have on facial coverings when near other people, according to Rich Stropky, Marine Safety Lieutenant for San Diego lifeguards.“The majority of them are not wearing masks, I would say at this point in time,” said Stropky. “As far as the capacity for our beaches, what has limited capacity in the past is the ability to park. How far are people willing to park and still walk to the beach? Are they going to Uber in? Are they going to do drop-offs?”Law enforcement agencies have said they will focus on educations, rather than enforcement, of public health orders this weekend. 3604

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- If you are experiencing mental fatigue like never before, you are not alone. Many people who are used to forging ahead in times of crisis, like this coronavirus pandemic, say the feeling is unfamiliar. Emily Chandler of Vista says she never could have imagined her kids would still be distance learning in the fall. "This has been going on so long, and I'm just exhausted," Chandler says. Her three sons are in three different schools and her oldest, Timmy, has autism. Helping them all with school means studying up on things herself. Marriage and family therapist Serene Carruthers, of Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, says what Chandler is feeling is tied to the seemingly endless nature of the pandemic."It really is because our body is built to respond to stressful events typically that last for a duration of a short period of time," says Carruthers. "Some experts call it surge capacity. Like a battery our adaptive system can provide us with the mental, physical and emotional power to survive a short-term emergency. Then it needs to be recharged which is easier said than done during a pandemic because for many people, their self-care rituals have been upended or canceled.""It is a very lonely time and I'm not getting that energy, that recharge," says Chandler. Carruthers says not to underestimate the power of play, which is free and can be done anywhere. She also recommends shifting expectations, maintaining connections with loved ones, keeping a gratitude journal about the good in your life, and exercising even if it's just walking in your home. Chandler says the reopening of her gym helped her feel like herself again, and she and Carruthers both say it's all right to ask for help, which Chandler says she's glad she did."I got on an anti-anxiety medication and I'm not embarrassed about that. It's really, really helped me," Chandler says. What has also helped is her boys have been troopers, making it clear that sometimes the biggest challenge can also bring the greatest joy. 2031

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - If you look up to the early morning sky on next week, there's a good chance you'll catch NASA's rocket launch.NASA's InSight is scheduled to launch May 5 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California between 4:05 a.m. and 6:05 a.m., weather permitting. The launch will be NASA's first interplanetary launch on the West Coast.Insight will launch atop an Atlas V rocket, one of the biggest available to make the 301-million mile voyage. And if you live in Southern California, you'll have a front-row seat.RELATED: SpaceX rocket launch seen above San Diego"If you live on the California Central Coast or south to L.A. and San Diego, be sure to get up early on May 5th, because Atlas V is the gold standard in launch vehicles and it can put on a great show," Tim Dunn, launch director for the Launch Services Program at the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida, said.If the launch is scraped, NASA has given a six-month time window to set InSight for Mars. Whenever InSight launches in this window, it would be scheduled to arrive at Mars Nov. 26, 2018, around 12 p.m."If you live in Southern California and the weather is right, you'll probably have a better view of the launch than I will," said Tom Hoffman, project manager for NASA's InSight mission, who will be in the control room during launch.RELATED: SpaceX?launches NASA'S planet-seeking satelliteInSight will deliver a lander and two satellites to the Red Planet to investigate how the planet was formed and has evolved over time. It will also measure Mar's seismic activity and how meteorites have affected the planet. The mission is estimated to last about two years. 1699
