(KGTV) -Students and parents in the South Bay are demanding the Sweetwater Union High School District bring back their buses.In a cost-cutting move, the district announced last May that it would eliminate dozens of bus routes throughout the district. Four of the district's high schools were impacted. Eastlake and Olympian High Schools each lost four routes, Otay Ranch lost one, but San Ysidro High School took the biggest hit; with twenty out of twenty-two routes cut.Olga Espinoza attended Monday night's school board. She said her son has to walk more than three miles each way to get to school. She said it's simply not safe."Since we are on the border, I feel like he could get kidnapped. It's a really dark road, there's no benches, no water, there's coyotes out there, tarantulas, bugs, it's not a nice road for children to be walking, " Espinoza said. A couple dozen parents and students marched into the meeting holding cardboard school buses. They chanted, "Cut from the top, not our buses!" Many of them were with The San Ysidro Students United and Madres Unidas. A district spokesman said school leaders are trying to address their concerns. "We are not in terms of putting back any routes because the policy does stand in terms of our 3 and a half mile polic, but we are looking at potentially adding a couple of routes that will support some of the routes that currently exist, part of the issue is drivers, we don't have the drivers," said Communications Director Manny Rubio. Rubio estimated roughly seven-hundred students use buses, and that included kids who live right down the street from their school. He also said enrollment and attendance are up this year at San Ysidro High School. Parents paid 0 for a bus pass, but Rubio said the cost to the district was closer to ,000 a student."We're one of the few districts who still offers home to school transportation, even San Ysidro Elementary, which is right down the street, does not offer home to school transportation," said Rubio.Routes for special education students are not impacted.The district also said it would not have made the cuts without the completion of Old Otay Mesa Road which was finished in May. 2223

(KGTV) - A vandal that struck overnight in a Chula Vista neighborhood was apparently targeting high-end vehicles.The Jovel family first noticed something was wrong Sunday morning in front of their home along Via Escalante."Upsetting and bizarre," said Jesse Jovel.His sister saw a flat tire on his Mercedes SUV parked in the driveway and ran inside to tell him about it. Jovel came outside, saw the flat, but then found much more: scratches across the body and tires of the Mercedes."I thought it was not happening, that it was a joke," said Jovel.They ran to the street, where his sister's Mercedes was parked. "Her car was the same way, and the car behind it and the car behind it," said Jovel.One of those cars was Jovel's other vehicle, a Maserati Ghibli. It was also keyed all over. Two of its tires were sliced and flattened."Sad. Very sad that people are willing to do this just for the heck of it," said Jovel.Jovel says a total of at least six other vehicles were targeted. He barely looked at the others but remembers them being new and high-end vehicles. (KGTV) – The Chula Vista Elementary School District’s administration team held a virtual meeting Friday morning that provided families with details on the district’s potential reopening plan.District officials said their plan is to ease students back in and give families the option to continue to learn virtually, on campus, or through a hybrid program.The first four weeks of the 2020-21 school year, scheduled to begin Aug. 31, will be online. After that period of distance learning, the district will assess the situation; allowing for a possible return to in-class instruction will depend on the level of active coronavirus cases in San Diego County.Superintendent Dr. Francisco Escobedo said a lot of prep work and planning has gone into the district's plan to reopen.During Friday’s meeting, he said, “We want our children to come back because we want in-person instruction. We believe it’s the best type of instruction there is, but we need to come back in a safe manner.”When students do make their return to school, campuses will look very different. The district spent millions of dollars on safety measures, including large sensors that take temperature and dispense sanitizer, large signs, personal protective equipment, and plexiglass dividers."We’ll have signage throughout the school depicting the type of behaviors we expect,” Escobedo added.According to Escobedo, the district has partnered with local company Kahala Bioscience to help conduct routine COVID-19 testing and identify ways to mitigate the spread of the virus.Escobedo said students will return when the county is at a low to medium risk for COVID-19, and when they do, only half of the students will be allowed back on campus with priority for those in K-3 grades.While digital learning is in place for the first few weeks of the school year, campuses will be used for child care through the YMCA, so teachers can utilize that service while in class.In preparation for digital learning, the district is still offering laptops to those who need them. The district has also worked with the city to disperse over 400 internet hotspots throughout Chula Vista.The district also wants parents to provide feedback during the digital learning period so they can access what's working and not working and relay that information to families. 2341

CINCINNATI – Police arrested a Cincinnati woman Tuesday after she left her 7-month-old child in her vehicle while she visited a hair salon, according to court records.Jaimyce McClinton, 37, is charged with one count of endangering a child.An officer found McClinton's baby locked in the vehicle as the temperature outside reached 76 degrees, court records state.The arresting officer noted the “feels like” temperature outside was 84 degrees.Police said the baby was left alone in the locked vehicle for 34 minutes.Court records did not state the baby’s condition or the location of the salon. 611
