SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether or not the Padres head to the World Series, Petco Park may still see playoff baseball this season.Under a plan by the MLB, a neutral-site playoff format with teams living in a "bubble" may be finalized next week, though it is awaiting approval by the Players Association, according to ESPN.The plan states that playoffs would start with the top four seeds in the AL and NL hosting all the games in a best-of-three wild-card series: the AL games between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1 and the NL games between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2.The highest AL seed would be the home team for the division series at Petco Park in San Diego, while the other series heads to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The AL championship series would then be played at Petco Park.On the NL side, the top seed into the division series would play at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and the next-highest seed would play at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The NL championship series would be hosted in Arlington.The MLB's reported plan would begin the World Series on Oct. 20 at Arlington and end no later than Oct. 28.ESPN reports that the Players Association is considering concerns from players who have lived outside of the bubble format, similar to how the NBA has operated this season, with the ability to be around family and friends. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two new studies published this week suggest people with blood type O have a lower likelihood of catching COVID-19 and developing severe illness than people with other blood types.Blood type is a characteristic we inherit from our parents and there are four major blood groups: A, B, AB and O.Danish researchers looked at nearly 500,000 people who tested positive for COVID-19 and found that people with type O were underrepresented.In a study published in the journal Blood Advances, the researchers found 38.4 percent of those infected had type O when that type actually makes up 41.7 percent of the population in that area.The researchers say the findings suggest people with type O are less likely to get infected in the first place.On the other hand, the team found that people with type A blood were overrepresented: 44.4 percent of those infected had type A compared to an expected value of 42.4 percent. The researchers suggest people with type A might be more at risk.Another study, also published in Blood Advances, looked at 95 critically ill patients in Canada. They found people with type O or type B blood tended to have a shorter stay in the intensive care unit, an average of nine days for those blood types compared to 13.5 days for people with type A or AB.They also reported that people with type O or type B were less likely to need a ventilator, with 61 percent of cases requiring mechanical ventilation compared to 84 percent for people with blood type A or AB.“Yes, there may be some of these associations. I don't think it's fully understood at this point,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego, who was not involved in the studies.The science on COVID-19 risk and blood type is mixed. These two new studies align closely with a previous study in China and another in Europe, but a third study in the U.S. found no significant link between severe COVID cases and blood type.At this point, doctors aren’t sure why blood type might affect outcomes with the disease, but there are several theories.“The immune system is an incredibly mysterious and complicated thing that we don't fully understand,” Ramers said. “Blood type sort of plays into that because people with different blood types actually have slightly different immune systems and immune responses.”Your blood type impacts the kind of antibodies you produce. That is why it is so important in blood transfusions to get the right blood type; blood from the wrong donor can trigger antibodies that attack those red blood cells.People with blood type O have two sets of antibodies, known as anti-A antibody and anti-B antibody. People with type A or B only have one or the other.Researchers in the Canadian study hypothesized that the anti-A antibody in particular may help control the coronavirus. People with blood type O and blood type B produce this kind of antibody. Individuals with type A or type AB do not.People with blood type O also have characteristics that make them less prone to issues with blood clotting, a major issue in severe cases of COVID-19.Experts say that if type O blood is protective against the virus, it’s not by a large amount.And this protective benefit doesn’t extend to all pathogens. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While enjoying a moment at the park over the weekend, a Carlsbad family was on the receiving end of an act of kindness from a stranger. The family says they are now hoping to find that person to say thank you.After months of staying at home, the family was excited to spend a day at Buccaneer Park in Oceanside. Eleven-year-old Jacobi and 12-year-old Jordan couldn’t wait to get outside.“They’re too old of the playground area, the swings and things like that,” says mom Tamara Coronado. “They look forward to the open space, the grass area, and definitely the basketball courts.”But Coronado says park officials had not yet reinstalled the basketball hoops, something the boys were looking forward to. The kids were left to make up their own games. It caught the attention of one man.“Forty-five minutes to an hour later, he came back… with a crafting reef from Dollar Tree and a very small basketball that would fit inside.”The man used a power drill to attach the wreath to a tree to form a makeshift hoop so that the boys could play basketball.“All that he asked was that we leave the wreath and the ball in place so that after we left, other families could use it,” says Coronado. “But the fact that he went out of his way like he did was, I just couldn’t believe it.”The mom says even though a lot is going on around the country, she wants others to know there are still kind people in the world. The family didn’t get the man’s name, but they’re hoping to find him to say thank you.“He may have not thought twice about it, and hasn’t thought about it since, but he really touched me and my family.” 1632

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Traffic was blocked Wednesday near the San Diego Superior Court Central Courthouse due to a hazmat investigation. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed the substance was found in the building at 1100 Union St. about 5 p.m. A court employee said the substance was a white powder found on the 10th floor.Preliminary information from the scene indicates the situation was linked to a letter inside the courthouse, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. By 6:30 p.m., crews determined the powder was harmless. 537
