Bonsall, Calif.,- Many horses and their owners are returning home to San Luis Rey Training Center, after the Lilac Fire devastated their homes. Chomping away at her breakfast is 6 year-old thoroughbred, Miss Napper Tandy.She is a sweet, race horse, who is also a survivor. “I smelled the smoke, and knew there could be trouble,” owner, Sam Nichols said, while recalling the troubling moments that changed their lives.Last December’s Lilac Fire burned 4,100 acres of North County, destroying 157 structures.One of them was their home— the stables at San Luis Rey Training Center in Bonsall.Miss Napper Tandy managed to get away from the flames, but found herself in a small pen with six other horses.In the chaos, she was badly injured.“She had been kicked pretty bad in the leg,” Nichols said.For a race horse, it was devastating. But thanks to donations and community support, she and dozens of her stable mates found a temporary home at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.“I rehabbed her here, I started working her here,” Nichols said.It worked. In her first race since the fire and her injury, Miss Napper Tandy took first.Adding to her title of “survivor,” she became a first-time “winner.”“It toughened her up, it made her more of a fighter. She’s always been a fighter, but she came through it pretty well,” Nichols said proudly.But five months after the devastation, temporary stables are now being opened up at San Luis Rey.Many riders and their horses are moving back.Miss Napper Tandy’s stay in Del Mar will soon come to a close.“It’s bittersweet going back. It’s been great for us and the horses. BOSTON (AP) — The story of Buddy the Elf meeting his biological father has come to life, just in time for the holidays.Doug Henning of Eliot, Maine, wore a costume to look like Will Ferrell in the movie “Elf” while meeting his father face to face for the first time last week at Logan Airport in Boston.He even broke into the same awkward song from the movie. Henning told Boston.com that his biological father “probably thought I was a lunatic.”The dad didn’t get the joke because he hadn’t seen the movie, but that didn’t stop him from giving his son a big hug while other family members laughed and cheered.Henning said the family eventually did sit down and watch the movie together as a family.Henning told Boston.com that he grew up with amazing adoptive parents, but he wanted to know more about his heritage, so he used Ancestry.com. Through the website, he connected with a cousin who helped him connect with his biological dad, who says he didn’t know he had a son.When getting to know each other, the biological father and son realized they both work in TV. BOCA RATON, Fla. — New developments in the investigation into a Boca Raton pet store where authorities say a dead puppy and several sick puppies were found late last year.The owner of Poochie Couture was arrested on Tuesday and is facing multiple animal cruelty charges.Marc Rosenbluth, 37, has since bonded out of jail.Last November, dozens of puppies were removed from Poochie Couture by Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, and the pet store was shut down.Rosenbluth surrendered some of the dogs after Boca Raton Police and Animal Care and Control said they found a dead 3-month-old puppy, along with several other sick animals."Had we not gotten there with Boca P.D., most likely the death toll would have much higher," said Dianne Sauve, the director of Palm Beach County Animal Care and ControlSauve said closing the pet store is a victory.Records show that of the 58 dogs inside the shop, investigators found the dead puppy and six french bulldogs that were sick with multiple problems. Two of them needed intensive care.Rosenbluth's arrest report said Poochie Couture lacked prevention of injury and did not assist with ongoing veterinary care."It is a shame some animals had to die in a result of this," said Kelly Evans, who called police in November, claiming Rosenbluth and his wife were not taking care of their puppies. The 12-member East Baton Rouge Metro Council fell one vote short of the seven needed for approval Wednesday.
