CHANDLER, Az. -- The Chandler Police Department in Arizona says it may file charges against Lori Daybell in connection to the death of her late husband, Charles Vallow, but that the decision to ultimately charge her will come from the prosecutor's office.Lori has since remarried and said in a court hearing that she prefers to be referred to by her new last name, Lori Daybell.In a statement, a spokesperson for the Chandler Police Department said "if and when" charges are sent over to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, they will include conspiracy to commit murder."Ultimately, whatever charge is sent over to the prosecuting agency by the Chandler Police Department, it is at the decision of the prosecutor," the police agency said in its statement.Charles Vallow was killed last summer in Chandler.In January of 2019, he made a call to Gilbert police asking them to conduct a welfare check at their home because he hadn't heard from his children, JJ and Tylee, in the two days prior. He also told police that Lori had been acting strange. "She’s psychologically gone, something has happened to her," he told authorities.Six months later, in July 2019, Charles was killed. Lori's brother, Alex Cox, admitted to shooting Charles but claimed it was in self-defense. Cox died in December of natural causes, according to a medical examiner's report.Chandler police said Lori has always been a "person of interest" in her late husband's death, but it is clear she did not shoot him. They said if charges are filed it would likely happen in 4-6 months. An exact date has not been determined, police said.Chandler police added that detectives still have search warrants and subpoenas out on the case and are going through over "10,000 pieces of digital data."Charles and Lori's children, JJ and Tylee, were reported missing for about six months until June of 2020 when their remains were found buried in the backyard of Lori's current husband, Chad Daybell's home in Idaho.Both have been arrested and are facing various charges.A criminal complaint alleges that Daybell concealed the remains between Sept. 22, 2019, and June 9, 2020. Rexburg police in Idaho began the search for the children in November 2019.He is currently in jail awaiting trial on several criminal charges, including destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence. He has pleaded not guilty.Vallow is being held at a jail in Madison County, Idaho and is also charged with misdemeanor resisting or obstructing officers, criminal solicitation to commit a crime and contempt of court. CASS COUNTY, Ind. — Six people, including four children, died early Wednesday morning in a house fire near Logansport, Indiana.The fire started at about 1:45 a.m., Wednesday in the 4300 block of Pottawatomie Road. Deputies who arrived said they climbed on the roof and broke windows to try and get inside, but the flames were too intense, Logansport Pharos-Tribune reporter Mitchell Kirk said.A man and a woman made it out of the house and were hospitalized. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Indiana Fire Marshal's Office has assigned three investigators to the site.  634

He teaches photojournalism at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.“The history of photography is the history of social change that was brought about through the use of the camera,” said Tasman.In the United States, cameras have captured great historic moments, as well as moments of shame.“Think about the civil rights movement. You think about, you know what we were talking about before: Rodney King, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, most recently Jacob Blake,” said Tasman.Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August. The shooting sparked protests in Kenosha and added Blake to a list of Black Americans who’ve suffered police violence caught on camera.The most infamous of 2020 was a Minneapolis police officer kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, who later died.“We’re living in a society where everybody has, has that camera and anybody can, not only take a picture, but it’s a device to transmit and share that,” Tasman said.Almost everyone has a cellphone with a high-powered camera that takes photos and videos. That impact has been felt everywhere, particularly on police officers and departments.“Capturing it on video has really brought these events into people’s homes,” said Paul Taylor, a professor at CU Denver.He focuses much of his research on bad outcomes between police and citizens, and solutions. He’s not sure cameras are the solution to police reform.“A lot of the police reform efforts have been focused on transparency, and body cameras have been a part of that, and accountability,”Taylor says while things like body cameras provide transparency and accountability they only show us outcomes.“These are surface level fixes that really don’t get at the systemic issues,” said Taylor.He suggests increasing police training time by a significant amount. In many places it only takes six months of training to become a cop.However while cameras may not stop cops from using deadly force, they allow the public to hold officers accountable. In the case of Floyd and Blake, if someone hadn’t been filming, the world may never have known what happened to them.If you ask Tasman, that shows how powerful cameras really can be.“The camera is a shield, but only if people, only if there’s some consequence.” 2341

CHICAGO — A special prosecutor in Chicago says Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx and her office abused their discretion in the case against actor Jussie Smollett but did nothing criminal. In a statement on the conclusions of his investigation, special prosecutor Dan Webb sharply criticized the handling of the Smollett case by Foxx and her assistant prosecutors, saying their handling was marked by disarray and misleading statements.In his conclusion, Webb wrote that the investigation “did not develop evidence that would support any criminal charges against State’s Attorney Foxx or any individual working at (her office)” but “did develop evidence that establishes substantial abuses of discretion and operational failures”In March last year, Foxx’s office surprised and angered many in Chicago by dropping charges that accused the former “Empire” actor of staging a racist, homophobic attack against himself. Cancer treatments can take a toll on the mind and body, leaving many patients feeling alone and isolated.Now, senior citizens fighting cancer, like Mary Hill, are able to escape their hospital rooms through virtual reality.By putting on a pair of goggles, Hill now spends her chemo appointments on stage at Red Rocks Amphitheater as an orchestra plays classical music all around her virtually, while in reality, she receives cancer treatments. “Wherever it is that they want to be that’s not a hospital room, we give them the opportunity to go there,” said Kyle Rand with Rendever, a company designed to reduce social isolation through shared experiences in virtual reality.Rendever is operating in more than 200 locations across the U.S. and Canada, serving seniors by offering them hundreds of virtual experiences to choose from.“The magical part about this is that they get to move from the hospital room that they’re in to all of a sudden being at the Red Rocks, or being standing on the Eiffel tower, or being in Brazil,” Rand said.Medical experts say this kind of distraction therapy is very helpful, especially during the COVID-19 crisis.“In the middle of this pandemic, a place that we’re not able to go to right now and enjoy and everyone loves Red Rocks,” said Nikki Caputo with UCHealth.She says adding VR for patients is somewhat challenging for an already busy staff, but that the benefits are well worth it.“From a mind, body and soul perspective, being able to put on a headset and take your mind to a completely different place, it's quite something,” she said.It's something patients like Hill say helps them escape during this pandemic and ultimately overcome depression and isolation.“With COVID, I don’t go anywhere,” she said. “I’m safe and secure and there’s an outside world that I can think about instead of myself.” 1848
