SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just in time for the San Diego Zoo's reopening this month, a recent animal addition will be making his debut.A 2-month-old male pygmy hippopotamus, named Akobi, and his mother, Mabel, have been moved from the park's maternity habitat to the main pygmy hippo habitat in the Lost Forest area of the zoo.Akobi, born on April 9 and the first success pygmy hippo birth at the zoo in more than 30 years, stayed close to his mom once introduced to the habitat. The animals live in rivers and streams in the forests of West Africa. Less than 2,500 pygmy hippos now remain in Africa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Kevin Luo of Pacific Trails Middle School is getting ready for his trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.Luo, who is a student at Pacific Trails Middle School, was crowned the winner of the countywide spelling bee in March. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's a problem on the rise in communities across San Diego; drivers racing down side streets to avoid rush hour traffic. When Doug Doyen saw speeding on his street, he tried to stop it. "It was almost like the Indy 500 I couldn't believe the speed, the amount of traffic and speed up and down this street," said Doyen.He put up his own signs to get drivers to slow down. "Hold the sign out, wave at them, people would be like, 'what the? Oh okay."' said Doyen. "And they'd look at me like, 'who is this guy?'" But the speeding is still a problem. He thinks GPS apps are directing drivers to his side street to avoid freeway traffic. "I couldn't believe the traffic and the speeds I was seeing out here," he said. Neighbors joined San Diego Police to form a Pace Car Program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Malls across San Diego County did not experience the rush of last-minute shoppers on Christmas Eve, as the coronavirus continues to take its toll on the economy and life in general."We used to have to have the employees park in a different section that was further away so it left the open spots for customers, we haven't needed to do that this year," said Caitlin Todd, manager at Grossmont Center's Prevue Formal and Bridal.Todd said other than Target and Sees, the mall has been less busy this holiday season. She said it's not just the economy, but also that the coronavirus has made in-person shopping a more practical matter. "With restaurants not having as much ability to have indoor dining or outdoor dining, it's been more of a 'come, get what you need and leave,' kind of shopping experience, versus an all-day thing with the family," she said. The virus has taken a toll on the retail industry, with employment in department stores down 28% compared to the same time last year. Malls have instituted social distancing, limited entertainment, and retailers are limited to 20% capacity - meaning lines to get in.
