NEW YORK, N.Y. – This year’s New York City Marathon, the world’s largest, has now been canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.The event organizer, New York Road Runners (NYRR), and New York City’s mayor’s office made the decision to cancel the November 1 race. 278

Nine undocumented immigrants were detained Thursday after a small panga boat landed in Laguna Beach, California, according to police.Seven people who came off the boat were detained, the Laguna Beach Police Department said, in addition to 2 drivers who were in what police described as "take-away" vehicles waiting to pick the migrants up.All 9 are undocumented, according a spokesman for the US Customs and Border Patrol, and their countries of origin are unknown.A panga is a boat often used for working off the coast of Mexico or Central America, according to the US Coast Guard. The engine-powered vessels are typically 25 to 45 feet long.They're also popular for smuggling, according to Theron Francisco, a border patrol spokesman.Laguna Beach police said there were actually a total of 13 individuals who came ashore in the boat. The department shared a video on its Twitter page that appeared to be shot from a nearby balcony, showing the group pulling the panga boat out of the surf before making their way up the beach.Similar incidents played out in the area earlier this year.On June 19, another panga boat came ashore in Crystal Cove State Park, just north of Laguna Beach, police said in a press release at the time. Four men were detained by CBP following a multi-agency search of the area, Laguna Beach police said.And in May, 10 undocumented immigrants were arrested after their panga boat came ashore in La Jolla outside San Diego, according to CNN affiliate KGTV.Thursday's detentions took place as thousands of Central American migrants seeking asylum in the United States are waiting in the Mexican border city of Tijuana. 1680

NEW YORK — David Dinkins, the first Black mayor of New York City, died Monday at the age of 93.Dinkins was elected in 1989 and served as mayor from 1990 to 1993, making him the first and only Black man to serve as the city's mayor.He was born in 1927 in Trenton, New Jersey. He was drafted, served as a Marine and later graduated from Howard University and Brooklyn Law School. He served in the state assembly before later becoming president of the board of elections, a city clerk and Manhattan borough president.Dinkins defeated longtime incumbent Mayor Ed Koch in the Democratic primary in 1989 and later beat Rudy Giuliani on his path to City Hall.In his inaugural address, he vowed to be "mayor of all the people of New York" and declared, "we are all foot soldiers on the march to freedom."Dinkins was known for his reserved public demeanor and civility.He was an American voice in favor of anti-apartheid sanctions, and his policies as mayor reflected his support for South Africa.He also created the office of Special Commissioner of Investigations for schools, built a system of after hour youth centers called Beacon Schools, and worked to create an all civilian police complaint review board.According to a city biography, Dinkins was sharply criticized for his handling of racial strife in Crown Heights, a boycott of Korean Grocers in Brooklyn and civil unrest in Washington Heights. He also dealt with sluggish economic growth.Giuliani succeeded Dinkins in 1993 after one term in office.After leaving City Hall, Dinkins remained active in city politics and taught public affairs at Columbia University.The NYPD said initial indications were that he died of natural causes.Dinkins was married to his wife Joyce for more than 65 years, and together they had two children.Joyce Dinkins died in October. NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says there might be no major league games this year.This comes amid a breakdown in talks between teams and the players' union on how to split up money in a season delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.The league also revealed several players have tested positive for COVID-19.Two days after union head Tony Clark declared additional negotiations futile, Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem sent a seven-page letter to players’ association chief negotiator Bruce Meyer asking the union whether it will waive the threat of legal action and tell MLB to announce a spring training report date and a regular-season schedule.“The proliferation of COVID-19 outbreaks around the country over the last week, and the fact that we already know of several 40-man roster players and staff who have tested positive, has increased the risks associated with commencing spring training in the next few weeks,” Halem wrote in his letter to Meyer, which was obtained by the Associated Press.The pandemic caused the league to stop spring training on March 12, two weeks before the start of the season. On March 26, the sides reached an agreement on how to revise their labor deal to account for the virus. Hostility has escalated since then as both sides exchange offers. 1301

North Wind Heating and Air is a local family-run business proudly serving Macomb County for 28 years. Lisa Agostino signed a work order approving both a service call and repairs to her a/c unit. The part was installed that same day. After the part was installed she reached out to North Wind stating that she no longer agreed with the price of the replaced part. Ms. Agostino was offered a solution to the dispute. She agreed that the part would be returned to North Wind. In turn Ms. Agostino would not be charged. This is what occurred. Ms. Agostino has not been charged for the service call or the replacement part.Days later Ms. Agostino posted false statements about North Wind on-line. She represents that she paid for the service call and replacement part, which she did not. These statements significantly effected North Wind's business. North Wind is a small local business. Ms. Agostino's false and defamatory statements have not only effected the North Wind's business, but has had a direct negative effect on its ability to offer full time hours to its employees.Prior to filing the lawsuit North Wind reached out to Ms. Agostino requesting the removal of the false statements. She refused. North Wind is simply seeking the removal of these false on-line statements.North Wind will continue to proudly serve its customers. 1342
