SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More than 24,000 people were left without power due to an unplanned outage in San Diego Tuesday afternoon. The power outage was reported around noon and affected 24,067 people throughout San Diego. As of 7 p.m., the San Diego Gas and Electric outage map showed 3,352 customers without power. Neighborhoods affected include: City Heights, Chollas Creek, Oak Park, Kensington, Talmadge, W State College, Rolando, E State College and La Mesa. RELATED: Homeowner saves thousands by making his house more energy efficientAccording to SDG&E, the outage was caused by a bird coming into contact with a substation near 54th Street and Chollas Parkway. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Over the last year, thousands of San Diegans received incorrect water bills, but as the city recently discovered, thousands of customers received no bills at all.Officials said at a news conference Thursday afternoon that as many as 2,500 customers may have been affected over the last three to six months. In a press release sent to 10News Thursday, the city blamed a backlog of work orders and additional training for staff on a gap between meters and the public utilities department billing system.RELATED: Audit shows City sent thousands of faulty water bills? The city says meters were still collecting usage data, but the information wasn't being generated into a bill.Earlier this year, Mayor Kevin Faulconer asked the department to re-read every meter in the city. After the project was complete, workers found 10,000 meters broken, damaged or in need of replacement. The city is working to notify customers of the amounts they may owe and says that no water service will be affected. The city also promised that payment plans will be made available for customers. The issue comes on the heels of another problem with the department. Over the last year, the audit found that thousands of San Diegans received incorrect bills. RELATED: San Diego man furious with city over ,000 water billThe issue was largely due to human error, the audit found. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Naval aviators and Marines from NAS North Island and Camp Pendleton are helping firefighters battle the Valley Fire. They joined four aircraft from the Army National Guard who came nearly straight from fighting fires in Northern California, according to Army National Guard officials."Due to the increased fire activity throughout the state of California up to and including Southern California, we are extremely short on resources, private, state, and federal resources. So we've enacted our emergency response agreement with the military here in San Diego including the Navy out of North Island and the Marine Corps out of Camp Pendleton and Miramar," Cal Fire Capt. Nick Clements said.San Diego County said the Cedar and Witch Creek/Guejito Fires were a "wake up call" and in 2008 created a new emergency operation plan partnering with the military as an added resource in a firefight.RELATED COVERAGEINTERACTIVE MAP: Valley Fire erupts in Japatul Valley areaPHOTOS: Valley Fire erupts in East CountyThree helicopters from the Navy's Third Fleet started making water drops Tuesday. The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing has 6 choppers on standby at Camp Pendleton. They got the call Sunday night and 12 hours later they were coordinating with CAL FIRE."I knew it was a possibility but I didn't expect to go do it," Crew Chief Cpl. Michael Sennett said. They dropped 1,500 gallons of water on Monday, according to the Wing."It's cool because they use the same kinds of equipment we do so we're able to get tips and tricks from them." Sennett said they're used to flying low and carrying loads, from troops, to weapons, to any other resource.RELATED COVERAGESocial media reaction to Valley FireCheck today's weather forecast in your areaThis week their load was water, which can be tricky, he says, "sometimes we miss and it's like okay let's make a correction and adjust and we can hit it next time."Sennett said it's not the wind that makes the timing difficult, it's judging the motion of the Huey.He said Crew Chiefs coordinate critical parts of the mission. They lay on the floor of the chopper and watch the bucket fill with water, then call for the drop, when they're near the assigned target."It's definitely been a long couple days because from start-up to shut down, we come in at six, we have to land by 18[00] so it's a 12-hour day usually," Sennett said. Those long days paying off as the containment of the Valley Fire jumped from 1% - 32%."It feels invigorating to go out and do something that has a positive impact on the people around us. So much of Southern California supports what we do here and so it's good to give back to the local community," Pilot John Findley said. The crews flying out of Pendleton have years of training to qualify for this mission. It takes hundreds of hours of maintenance to keep the helicopters running during these missions.Thursday, the fire had burned about 17,565 acres and was 32% contained. The fire has destroyed 20 "habitable structures" and 17 "minor structures" and resulted in two injuries, though it was not clear if the victims were firefighters or civilians. 3137

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New restrictions going into effect Sunday night limit restaurants, wineries and breweries to take out only, making them brace for the next three weeks. The new stay-at-home orders mandated by Governor Gavin Newsom were triggered due to the rapidly increasing number of hospitalizations from the coronavirus.Mike Hess, Chief Brewing Officer at Mike Hess Brewing, estimated this will be the fifth time his breweries have to shut down across San Diego."I've kinda lost track of the dates and times, I know we're just doing what we need to do to keep going," he said. Each time, he's reinvented the business, making hand sanitizer, selling canned beer to go and adding COVID-19 safety measures in order to reopen."This is tough, it's very hard on a business. It's very hard to manage a business that is reliant on a certain amount of cash flow and business operations," Hess said.Starting Monday they'll shut down again. This time he's transforming some of their outdoor seating at their Imperial Beach location into a drive through lane."People can cruise right in to that orange cone barricade, go right around Elm, right back up Ocean and pick up their tacos and beer right out of the back door which is right where the food comes out of the kitchen anyway so it's going to be piping hot," he said.Hess added the North Park location will also have a drive through option. He hopes they see enough take out customers in the next three weeks, the length the new orders last, to avoid any furloughs this holiday season."We have 80 families that work for Mike Hess Brewing and they're relying on us for a paycheck so the shut down is having a big effect," he said.Hess is frustrated the new restrictions target the restaurant industry when retail is allowed to open in a limited capacity. He is still holding a "Joy Drive" for the Jesse Rees Foundation, donating 25% of gift card sales through December 21st. 1927
