SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some late-night fun is heading to the San Diego Zoo, for the park's "Nighttime Zoo" festivities this summer.The special after-hours celebration runs June 16 - Sept. 2, keeping the zoo's gates open until 8 p.m. for live music, performances, and special animal encounters.Guests can check out trampoline acrobatics, traditional music and dance at Africa Rocks, the roving Chameleons band, or the Jambo! parade on Front Street. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting this month, the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park will begin requiring ticket reservations for all guests.The two parks have avoided requiring ticket reservations since reopening as an outdoor attraction last June. SeaWorld San Diego and LEGOLAND California have reopened in more limited capacities and have required reserved tickets for guests.Starting Dec. 5, the two zoos will begin to require a reservation for guests. San Diego Zoo Global says the change will be in addition to health screenings and safety measures already implemented throughout the park."Due to COVID-19, in order to keep our community safe during this time and in anticipation of high demand, the San Diego Zoo will implement a reservation system required for entry," the zoo's website reads.Ticket reservations will be required for all visitors ages 3 and older. San Diego Zoo members will need to make a reservation to visit ahead of time as well. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say their recruitment numbers are up, in part due to their innovative recruitment strategies.In a presentation at the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee, data showed they've hired more people in 2018 compared to 2017 and 2016. "We had 63 candidates that applied for there and are in the academy, that was the largest, highest number academy we've had in 25+ years," Lt. Steve Waldheim, with SDPD's Backgrounds and Recruiting Unit said.So far this year, the department's hired 94 total officers, 15% are women.Here's the breakdown:2016: 3,229 took written exam, 137 hired2017: 3,184 took written exam, 126 hired2018: 2690 took written exam, 198 hiredWaldheim said their recruitment officers are doing a better job selecting applicants and preparing them for the hiring process, creating a lower drop off rate."The more officers we put on the street, the safer it is for the community, the faster response times we have," Waldheim said they need to fill 175 vacant positions, and to do so, they've gotten creative.Those innovative ways include everything from going to schools, military bases, Comic Con, working with the Padres to advertise and getting on social media."One of the biggest challenges is our unemployment rate," he said. San Diego County's unemployment rate remains low, hovering around 3% providing a limited pool to pull from.Once sworn in, Waldheim said there's multiple career options within the department, "helicopter, you can ride on a boat with our beach team, we have canines, motorcycles, we have detectives, investigations."He said the city's worked to increase their pay, to become competitive with other law enforcement agencies. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University officials say two students have tested positive for coronavirus, but that the cases are not connected and the risk to the campus is low.A statement on behalf of the campus said the school confirmed Wednesday the two students had tested positive and that both students live off-campus. The students were tested by the college's Student Health Services.The two cases are not believed to be connected to any reported off-campus gatherings, the school statement said.
