BALTIMORE, Md. – In looking for creative inspiration, engineering student Qiyuan Fu finds it in a box, with an interesting occupant. Inside: a real, live snake. “We can definitely learn something from them,” Fu said. The snake is a Kingsnake, which is native to deserts in California and Mexico and serves as the model for a new robot, developed in a mechanical engineering lab at Johns Hopkins University. “We added this one directional wheel, so it can only rotate in one direction,” said Fu, as he demonstrated how the robot moves. The “snake robot,” and its colleague, the “roach robot,” are so-called “bio-inspired robots” – taking their cues from mother nature. “We studied snakes here because they are exceptionally good at moving through almost any terrain,” said Johns Hopkins assistant professor Chen Li. Li said it’s an idea with practical applications: the robots could potentially help in search and rescue, by making their way through tight spaces to find people trapped in rubble. “People have actually tried to build snake robots for several decades,” he said. In the past, though, the robots fell short once they left the lab environments, unable to make it through different types of terrain. This time – using specially positioned cameras – they’ve observed how the snakes and roaches move across different surfaces and attempted to mimic what nature already does so well. “What's really unique about our work is that we focus on understanding the physical principles – starting by looking at animals,” Li said. “And then by understanding such principles, we can apply them to the to the robot.” The snakes have 200 vertebrae; the snake robot has 20 segments. It’s progress, these engineers say, with more to go. “There’s still going to be a lot of challenges ahead,” Li said.The engineering lab is now looking into modeling robots based on lizards. DENVER, Colorado — Cloud seeding can provide between 5% and 15% more snow to help ski areas, farmers and watersheds in the state, supporters say. "These observations show us that cloud seeding does work," said University of Colorado researcher Katja Friedrich, who has studied cloud seeding inside and outside of a laboratory. She worked with scientists who flew planes near moisture-rich clouds and injected them with silver iodide, a substance that causes moisture to become heavy and fall to the ground as snow. On a radar image, she pointed outlines of snow that later formed. The visible lines matched the pattern the cloud seeding plane had flown in the sky. Cloud seeding in Colorado aims to produce more snow, not rain. Friedrich said it's difficult to quantify how much additional snow is created. Cloud seeding doesn't make more clouds, but supporters believe it gets more snow out of an approaching storm. Planes can be used to seed approaching storm clouds. Ground seeders use propane to heat the air and also used in the mountains and Western Slope. Silver iodide is then added to the warmed air as it rises. The moisture, already in the clouds, bonds to the silver iodide. When it becomes heavy, it falls to the ground as snow. Cloud seeding has been happening for about 70 years in Colorado but is slowed in years when there is heavy snowfall. Cloud seeders operated during the 2018-2019 winter but slowed in places where significant snowpack accumulated. A man who owns a cloud seeding company on the Western Slope said the technology works well. Ski areas hire Eric Hjermstad's Western Weather Consultants company to cloud seed early in the season, so there's more natural snow before opening day. He continues seeding until mid-April. It was not a quiet afternoon Monday at Madison Square Park.Brian Kemsley was walking with his girlfriend when he saw and heard a commotion on the Fifth Avenue side of Madison Square Park. He saw a man trying to rip away a stroller.“It's not a matter of stepping in it's a matter of duty, when you see a woman and her child screaming,” he said.He says the man was asked to let go of the stroller but kept reaching for the baby. The mother was also holding another toddler and everyone was screaming.Kemsley pinned him down and waited for police to arrive. It was captured by a witness on social media. Witnesses recorded video and called 911. Rangers arrived after about fifteen minutes and Kemsley says police took the man into custody. He was taken to a hospital and no one was hurt. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, Long Island's largest, has filed for bankruptcy, according to the diocese.Reverend John Barres, the bishop of Rockville Centre, announced the "difficult" news in a letter posted on the diocese's Twitter account Thursday.Barres said the diocese filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code earlier in the morning.The bishop said the decision comes after more than 200 lawsuits alleging sexual abuse were filed against the Diocese of Rockville Centre in the year since the passage of the Child Victims Act.
