BOULDER, Colo. – A Boulder, Colorado, family says their son was stuck with a hypodermic needle while playing near a creek by the Park East Park. Now, the family is warning parents to have a talk with their children.Wade Green says his four-year-old son was on a play date with another kid when he found a needle. Green’s son picked up the needle and started playing with it. The nanny who was watching him asked the four-year-old what it was and he said it was a pH meter. It wasn’t until Green’s son made it home and showed the needle to his wife that someone realized what it was. The family lives near their pediatrician and immediately took their son to see him.“Examining him a little further, (the doctor) noticed two needle marks in his hand,” Green said. “When it happens to your own child, it’s just a heart wrenching.”So far, the four-year-old has taken two tests to see whether he has contracted a transmittable disease. He will have to undergo two more tests before being given the all-clear by doctors. This is not the only time people in the community have found needles laying around.“Two days before, a neighbor had told my wife that they had found a needle at the park east playground and they weren’t going to go there anymore because they didn’t feel like it was a safe place to take their kids,” Green said. The nanny that was watching their son also found a needle along the road last weekend. At the Boulder City Council meeting this week, 1474

AURORA, Colo. -- Olive is a 3-year-old girl who loves to cuddle. As sweet as she is, her parents call her a “champ” because her life so far has been filled with countless hospital visits.“She’s such an easy-going baby, but you can tell it really gets to her to be in the hospital with all the IVs and the stickers and medicine and people coming in and poking you every two hours,” said Olive’s mother, Gloria Angel.Olive has a complex heart disease. It has required her to undergo multiple major surgeries, all of which have gone well, thanks to a new method of cardiac imaging. Children’s Hospital of Colorado is leading the nation as the first medical center combining 2D and 3D imaging to print an exact replica of patients’ hearts.“When olive came, we needed to take a picture of her pulmonary arteries because the left one was a little bit narrowed,” Dr. Jenny Zablah said.Dr. Zablah is the Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist who has been working with Olive. She says the 3D image allows the cardiologists to better picture what is going on so they can plan to fix the problem.Next, a soft 3d model is printed which gives doctors an opportunity to physically work with the model – determining how the veins and arteries will react to the implantation of stents and other devices during surgery.“It’s really cool that they’re using such advanced imagery. I was really grateful to know they were using the best of their technology to take care of her,” Angel said. Not only can surgeons anticipate the condition of the heart prior to surgery, but Dr. Zablah says they’ve also cut radiation and procedural time by more than half.“Every cath procedure involves radiation which increases risk of things like cancer. So, the main goal is trying to do every procedure in the cath lab with the least radiation possible,” Dr. Zablah said. And less time means patients won’t be under for so long.“What was really exciting about it is that they knew what they were up against before they got in there. Because the longer a kiddo is under anesthesia, the risks go up for negative things to happen,” Angel said.Once doctors are done with the model, they use it to give families a deeper understanding of how the heart functions. Then they’re allowed to take it home.“It’s kind of comforting in an abstract way,” Angel said. “You’re just like ‘wow.’”Although little Olive is expected to live a normal life, the model will always be a reminder of the challenges she overcame in her youngest years.“I never thought a tiny human being would teach me about strength. But she has. She’s so resilient, and so happy all the time no matter what,” Angel said. “I think Olive has a wonderful life ahead of her.”******************************************************If you'd like to contact the journalist for this story, please email 2828

Antibiotics are powerful, they fight off infections and save lives. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration now warns that a common class of antibiotics could cause an aortic aneurysm. And this could lead to fatal bleeding. The class of antibiotics is called fluoroquinolone. There are used to treat a variety of illnesses like pneumonia, urinary tract infections, respiratory infections and the plague. Now fluoroquinolone antibiotics are sold under different drug names, so check your medicines for names like:ciprofloxacin (Cipro)gemifloxacin (Factive)levofloxacin (Levaquin)moxifloxacin (Avelox)norfloxacin (Noroxin)ofloxacin (Floxin)The FDA looked at the latest research, focusing on studies between 2015 and 2018. They found that when patients were prescribed a fluoroquinolone drug, they were twice as likely to have an aortic aneurysm. The aorta is a major blood vessel. Its job is to carry blood from your heart to your body. If you have an aortic aneurysm, this means an abnormal bulge or ballooning has happened in the wall of the aorta. If it grows large enough, it can burst and dangerous bleeding can happen, or even death.People who have an increased risk include the elderly, folks with high blood pressure, anyone with a history of aneurysms or blockages of blood vessels, patients with peripheral atherosclerotic vascular diseases and those with genetic disorders like Marfan syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. If you are taking this medication, please don’t stop using it before discussing it first with your doctor because fluoroquinolones may be the only antibiotic treatment to fight what illness you have. But if you get symptoms like sudden, severe and constant pain in the stomach, chest or back, you need to get emergency help immediately. Fluoroquinolones have been used for 30 years and, overall, the risk of an aortic aneurysm is low. So if you’re not in the high-risk category, this antibiotic could still be a good option to fight bacterial infections. 2001
