SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's a disease that kills nearly a half million people a year. Mostly children. But painstaking work right here in San Diego is bringing the world ever closer to ending malaria."After you've been doing it for a while you get a little bit tired," said PhD student Madeline Luth, as she works over a microscope, "You're hands get a little bit shaky."She's part of a research team at UC San Diego involved in tedious, precise work."I'm using my syringe here to separate out a single mosquito," she said, "to isolate the thorax which contains all of the malaria parasites." Malaria is a parasite spread by mosquitoes; making the insect the deadliest organism on the planet -second only to humans. Millions of people -primarily in poor parts of the world like Africa- are made sick by the parasite every year. And hundreds of thousands die."What we're trying to do is interrupt the process so the infection never takes hold in your liver.," said Dr. Elizabeth Winzeler, who heads up the research team at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. "So you never develop any symptoms of the disease".Dr. Winzeler says here team has tested more than a half million compounds against the parasite. And is now about to release hundreds of promising mixtures to researchers around the world. "They can take the recipes and the information that we've used and start their own anti-malarial drug development," says Dr. Winzeler.The open door approach with no intellectual property protections, is made possible by billions of dollars in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is also a necessity since the vast majority of those new drugs will save, are too poor to pay for medicine. The venture is purely to save lives. "We're doing this for the good of humanity, says Dr. Winzeler, "And I think everyone is on board with this idea." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Light scattered showers fell throughout the day from Mission Valley to Carmel Valley.While Sunday's rainfall marked the first fall rain for the region, Alex Tardy with the National Weather Service said that rain will disappear by Monday. “We're looking at conditions that are bone dry, record dry. It’s never been this dry before and just a little bit of rain like this, while it's nice and we won’t have any fires [Sunday], once the dry air starts blowing through on Monday and continues into Tuesday, it's not going to make much of a difference,” Tardy said.RELATED: In-depth: Why La Ni?a could make wildfire season worseTardy said that San Diego may go long stretches without rainfall this season as we move into a dry La Ni?a winter. However, when the rain eventually comes, it could come in sporadic heavy storms. Tardy also added that the conditions will have fire crews on high alert for weeks. “It also means a delay in the start of our winter so we could be in for a very long fall period where we mostly see dry conditions,” Tardy says. “What that means for us is that fire danger [could be] continuing into the fall and well into the early winter.” 1186

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many Black female voters in San Diego voters are celebrating Joe Biden’s decision to choose California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate.“This is a historic moment. I’m excited that I’m alive to see this happen,” said Ellen Nash, the chair of the San Diego chapter of the Black American Political Association of California.“All along that was the right choice,” Nash told ABC 10News. “I’m honored that she’s there to represent Black women and the Black vote. For Joe Biden to honor us by selecting her as his VP is the greatest historic moment.”Many Black voters wrote to Biden, urging him to choose Harris.Nash said having Harris as the first Black and Asian American woman to appear on a major party’s presidential ticket gives women of color a voice.“It was just a moment of relaxation and celebration,” said Nash. “She is prepared, skilled, and credentialed.”But does this choice possible boost Biden’s chances of winning this election? Dr. Kyra Greene, the executive director at the Center on Policy Initiatives, said Harris would bring new life to this race while appealing to a wide range of voters.“She’s young enough to attract young folks but old enough to show experience and to be taken seriously,” said Greene. “I think it will help with women who were disappointed not to see other women advance further in this race, and I also think it will help with Black voters.”“I think Senator Harris speaks to people who are interested in change because she herself has gone through an evolution on these issues,” she said.Greene said the decision not only makes history but will reenergize some of the most politically engaged San Diegans. 1678
