Mourners gathered Thursday night in Washington's Dupont Circle to remember the gay college student whose murder changed the way we think about hate crimes, and call attention to the battles that remain. It's been 20 years since Matthew Shepard was robbed, pistol-whipped and tied to a fence by two men he met in a bar in Laramie, Wyoming. He was left in the freezing cold overnight, and a cyclist who thought he was a scarecrow discovered him. He later died in a hospital.Shepard's ashes will be interred Friday at the Washington National Cathedral -- the only place where his parents felt they would be safe from desecration. His death galvanized the LGBTQ civil rights movement, leading to the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, also named for a black man who was killed by three white supremacists in Texas.Speakers at Thursday's candlelight vigil told those in attendance that the fight continues for equal rights and treatment for the LGBTQ community, especially transgender and gender-nonconforming people. The world is a different place than it was when Shepard was killed, said Rev. V. Gene Robinson, who will carry his ashes and preside over Friday's service."But the kind of hatred and violence that killed Matthew Shephard is alive and well and living in this country," Robinson told CNN affiliate WJLA."We've grown more likely to label some people 'other' and treat them horribly. ... Every good person I know needs to stand up and say that's not who we are," Robinson said.Several speakers drew attention to the plight of transgender and gender-nonconforming people, who are protected under the hate crimes act, but have lost other protections under the Trump administration. With the din of traffic humming in the background, one speaker read aloud the names of 28 transgender people killed in 2018."Today, we can change our gender marker on our IDs but we can lose our lives on the streets of these cities simply by someone finding out that we are transgender," another speaker said.A recent New York Times report of an administration proposal to exclude transgender people from anti-discrimination laws stoked fears of more losses. Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, called on the gay community to stand with transgender people in their fight for legal protections from discrimination."We can't just say the 'T' at the other end of the initials and not do the hard work of getting to know them and love them and then stand with them," he said. 2534

MOSCOW — The Kremlin says Russian President Vladimir Putin won’t congratulate President-elect Joe Biden until legal challenges to the U.S. election are resolved and the result is official.Putin is one of a handful of world leaders who have not commented on Biden’s victory, which was called by major news organizations on Saturday. However, President Donald Trump’s team has promised legal action in the coming days and refused to concede his loss. He has alleged large-scale voter fraud, so far without proof. When Trump won in 2016, Putin was prompt in offering congratulations, but his spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Monday that this year’s election is different. The leaders of China, Mexico, Brazil and Turkey also are holdouts in offering congratulations.China says it has taken note of Biden's declaration of victory in the election but is holding off on sending any message of congratulations.A foreign ministry spokesperson says the result of the election would be determined under U.S. laws and procedures and that China would follow international practices in extending its sentiments.China has had a fractious relationship with Trump, characterized by growing friction over trade, technology and competition for influence in Asia and the world.Analysts say Biden will likely return ties to a less contentious state, although Beijing has stuck throughout the election to a position of not commenting directly on what it says is an internal American political issue. 1489

Moderna announced on Thursday that it had enrolled 30,000 participants in its Phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine trial, with more than 11,000 of those participants from communities of color.More than 25,650 participants have already received their second vaccination, the company said in a press release. The company added that the study also includes 7,000 participants over the age of 65.“Completing enrollment of the Phase 3 COVE study is an important milestone for the clinical development of mRNA-1273, our vaccine candidate against COVID-19," said Stéphane Bancel, Chief Executive Officer of Moderna in the news release. "We are indebted to all of the participants in the study. We would also like to thank the investigators and our partners at clinical trial sites, including our partners from PPD and the NIH, as well as the dedicated Moderna team for their support in completing enrollment. Moderna is committed to rigorous scientific research and the highest data quality standards. We will continue to work in collaboration with regulators to advance mRNA-1273, which we hope will help defeat the COVID-19 pandemic.”CNN reported that for Moderna to apply to the FDA for emergency use authorization, the following three things need to happen:53 of the 30,000 participants would need to become sick with COVID-19, which is expected to occur in the second half of November.40 of the 53 participants who do become ill with COVID-19 need to have received the placebo, which would show that the vaccine is 75% effective.Make sure enough time has passed to see if participants develop side effects.According to CNN, Moderna is the first company to start US clinical trials of a COVID-19 vaccine. 1696

National Rifle Association board member and classic rocker Ted Nugent slammed survivors of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, calling them "liars" and "poor, mushy-brained children."Nugent made the comments during an interview on "The Joe Pags Show," a nationally syndicated conservative radio program."All you have to do now is not only feel sorry for the liars, but you have to go against them and pray to God that the lies can be crushed and the liars can be silenced so that real measures can be put into place to actually save children's lives," Nugent said about the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students."These poor children, I'm afraid to say this and it hurts me to say this, but the evidence is irrefutable, they have no soul," he added. 768

MUNCIE, Indiana — Ball State University decided Friday it will keep the name of Papa John’s founder on campus, while Purdue University announced it will do the opposite. In a statement released Friday morning, the board said it made the decision based upon its "current understanding of what transpired" during a conference call last May in which John Schnatter admitted to saying the N-word.Schnatter graduated from Ball State in 1983 and founded Papa John's in 1984. The Institute for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise was later named after Schnatter. You can read the full statement can be below:  634
