TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida father died after his ambulance broke down and it took nearly an hour to get him to the hospital. WFTS uncovered that this failure is part of a record of repair problems and an even bigger problem putting the public at risk.When Richard Bateman, a 50-year-old father who traveled the world playing with heavy metal bands, collapsed in his living room on September 5, his wife, Amy Bateman, called 911.A Tampa Fire Rescue engine and ambulance arrived within minutes. But when they tried to drive him to the hospital, the ambulance would not start. The crew called for a backup rescue truck.The second ambulance arrived nearly 40 minutes after the first 911 call.“It was heart-wrenching,” Amy Bateman said. “It was horrible.”The ride to the hospital took 11 minutes. TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The first federal execution in 17 years is on hold after a U.S. judge ordered a new delay in federal executions.Daniel Lewis Lee, of Yukon, Oklahoma, was scheduled to be executed at 4 p.m. Monday at the Federal Correctional Institution in Terre Haute, Indiana.A U.S. district judge ordered a new delay in federal executions on Monday morning. Lee's execution had previously been been suspended late Friday following a decision by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.The Trump administration immediately appealed, asking a higher court to allow the executions to move forward, according to The Associated Press.Lee is one of four people who are scheduled to be executed at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute. "It's got to be easy for them to get it, and the more effort there is and time involved in the shopping, the less fresh foods is going to be in that basket," said Brahm Ahmadi, the CEO of Community Foods Market. While he'd never owned a grocery store, Ahmadi understood what the absence of one could mean for a community."Families were disproportionately suffering from diet-related chronic diseases, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease," said Ahmadi. "And then all the residual, other negative impacts that has. For example, family members are sick, they can't work, and then income is reduced."After raising over several million dollars, Ahmadi's vision of a full-service market came to life one year ago."When the pandemic hit, I did still want to come to work because we need a store like this around," said employee Sharon Rance, who's worked at Community Foods Market since it opened."They were one of the stores that survived, they had the essential things we needed," said Eleanor, a local and regular customer. But like the big grocery store chains, the independent market was not immune to the overwhelmed supply chain."I think the whole industry was kind of caught off guard, and then we were also blown away by how difficult it was to build back having product in the store," said Ahmadi. He says changes in the industry are already happening, with manufacturers reducing the number of items they making to keep top-sellers consistently available. TAMPA, Fla. — A volunteer at Carole Baskin's Big Cat Rescue in Tampa was bitten by a tiger Thursday morning and sustained "an extreme injury to her arm."According to the organization, Candy Couser — who has volunteered with the animal sanctuary for five years — was injured while feeding a 3-year-old Tiger named Kimba on Thursday.According to a press release, Baskin said that Kimba nearly tore Couser's arm "off her shoulder" as she tried to feed him. The volunteers, according to the release, helped Couser stem the bleeding until an ambulance arrived and took her to St. Joseph's Hospital.Couser is expected to survive the attack.In the release, Baskin said that Couser had reached into a cage to open a door that had been clipped shut and that she should have contacted a supervisor when she realized the door was clipped. She also said Couser had violated protocols by putting her arm inside a cage with a tiger."Candy was still conscious and insisted that she did not want Kimba Tiger to come to any harm for this mistake," Baskin said in her press release.
