SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High surf is creating dangerous conditions for swimmers hitting the beach throughout San Diego County. A High Surf Advisory is in effect San Diego coastal cities from Monday morning at 8 A.M. until Tuesday night at 10 P.M.Just before 10 A.M. Monday, SDFD Lifeguards shut down the Ocean Beach Pier.They are also cautioning any swimmers and surfers who are not advanced to stay out of the water until the advisory expires.Many advanced surfers tell 10News they have been looking forward to this day for a long time. Those who hit the water Monday took advantage of the seven to 11 foot waves along the coast, saying it’s not just the swell and the direction but the time between the waves and the decreased winds that make for great surf conditions. "The quality and the length its just a great day a great day for everybody,” one surfer tells 10 News.One group of surfers found out first-hand how dangerous these conditions are. They were taking a boat to surf off of Point Loma when the waves flipped in Monday afternoon. The surfers escaped without injury, but the boat had to be towed back to shore. 1130

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Harbor Police were searching for a vandal Monday who set off a panic at an upscale steak house along the Embarcadero.Customers took cover under tables and ran for the exits at Ruth’s Chris Steak House Sunday night when projectiles smashed through at least two of the restaurant’s bay-facing windows. Someone inside the restaurant shouted “gun,” prompting fears of an active shooter, customers told 10News.“It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever been through,” said Joey Giacalone, a long-time patron and former co-owner of the Venetian Restaurant in Point Loma. “I mean everyone is diving under tables. It was pandemonium.”Two bartenders and a manager jumped into action, Giacalone and his wife said, directing guests to take cover and then evacuate the restaurant.RELATED: Hillcrest restaurant reopens after one week after shooting“There were cooks telling us to come to the back door. They sent us through the kitchen. Because again, no one knew what information was really out there. We thought there was an active shooter,” he said. “I kept envisioning a gunman coming around the corner to shoot us all,” Juli Giacalone added.One of the servers working that night survived the Route 91mass shooting in Las Vegas. Ricca Salazar “reacted quickly and ran out the back door with a couple other staff members,” her husband wrote on Facebook. “She fell and they helped her up,” he said. “Scary night, scary scenario.”Harbor Police determined someone had thrown rocks through the windows. Investigators believe the unidentified vandal may have been a disgruntled customer who left the restaurant without paying earlier that evening, said Lt. Victor Banuelos.Joey Giacalone said the man had been acting strangely.“One guest said he saw him going into the women’s bathroom and said, ‘What the hell are you doing?’ And then he left,” he said.The Giacalones commended staff members for going “above-and-beyond” during the incident.“Everyone is panicking and these guys are saying, ‘Forget about me. I have to do my job for this staff and my guests,’” Joey Giacalone said.Afterward, Juli Giacalone said one of the bartenders approached her with a to-go bag in hand.“She’s like, ‘Here’s your food!’ Through the whole ordeal of being rushed out and fleeing -- we thought -- for our lives, she had carried our to-go bag through the whole situation.”Anyone with information on the vandalism should call Port of San Diego Harbor Police at 619-686-6272, Lt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews worked to put out large flames at a home on the 4400 block of Park Boulevard Friday night. A 10News viewer shared video showing flames engulfing the yard of the home in University Heights,  dangerously close to the pet grooming business next door.He told 10News people in the area broke the windows of the business to get to dogs inside, worried that the fire might spread to the business. Shortly before 10 p.m. crews were able to put out the flames. San Diego Gas and Electric crews were also on scene to turn off a small gas leak.   624

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time since mid-July, several San Diego County businesses were allowed to resume indoor operations.Under Gov. Gavin Newsom's new tiered system for businesses reopening during the pandemic, several more industries can welcome customers inside, but with modifications and or capacity limits.Danny Daniels owns Barbers Den in Chula Vista. He was thrilled to have customers back inside Monday afternoon."This is my passion, I love barbering, I love everything about barbering," said Daniels, who has been cutting hair for nearly 20 years."I truly believe something as simple as a haircut can go a long way in making someone feel good," he added.Austin Campbell is the managing partner of Sola Salons Studios in San Diego. He owns and helps run 15 locations.Campbell is among the owners who traveled to the state capitol to protest the governor's second shut down back in July."On the first shut down everybody said, this is going to be tough, but it's the right thing to do, everyone just hunkered down and said we gotta get through it, but the second shut down, people took it; personally, they thought this was uncalled for, unfair, completely arbitrary and not researched," said Campbell.Many stylists said the governor's decision to allow salons to move services outside made no sense."The whole offer of outside hair, to be honest with you, was kind of a slap in the face of our industry," said Campbell, adding that inside was safer and more sanitary.Everything that the state recommended we could do, really pretty much was in complete contradiction to what everyone has been taught and been practicing for their entire careers," said Campbell. Salons don't have capacity limits, but social distancing and mask mandates must still be followed. Campbell said the impact of the shutdowns has been far more than just financial."A lot of people are not just financially struggling, but mentally, emotionally, professionally, the beauty industry is more than just a job; it's a true career and identity," said Campbell.Campbell said his salons employ roughly 600 people. Many have already moved out of state.He has a message for the governor."Our industry has been prepared for this long before covid existed, and we take it very seriously. We ask that before you shut down 550 thousand women, first generation immigrants, single mothers, you do a little more research," said Campbell. 2424
