But a company's growth ultimately relies on its inner drive. Companies should improve quality, develop new products and expand their market," he said.Wen also visited Shaanxi Huasheng (Group) Corp. Fruit Co. Ltd., a high-tech agriculture company in the apple industry. The company has production bases in more than 20 counties."The global economy is recovering, but at a slow pace. There are many uncertainties. BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Growth of China's foreign exchange reserves are slowing as the total reached 2.4543 trillion U.S. dollars by the end of June, up 15.1 percent year on year, the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on Sunday.Statistics from the central bank show China's foreign exchange reserves increased by 7.2 billion U.S. dollars in the second quarter, a drastic decrease compared to the last quarter in 2009, when reserves grew by 126.5 billion U.S. dollars.Reserves in the first quarter increased by 47.9 billion U.S. dollars.The PBOC also said the declining euro was the major reason behind the slowing growth in foreign exchange reserves.The exchange rate between the euro and U.S. dollar had fallen by nearly 20 percent between the end of 2009 and May this year, according to the PBOC.China's basket of foreign exchange reserves include the U.S. dollar, euro, Japanese yen and others.On a monthly basis, reserves increased by 43.4 billion U.S. dollars in April followed by a reduction of 51 billion U.S. dollars in May, while June saw reserves increase by 14.8 billion U.S. dollars.China's gold reserves stood at 33.89 million ounces at the end of June, according to PBOC figures.

CHANGCHUN, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Soldiers and emergency workers are still struggling to retrieve the thousands of chemical-filled barrels that were swept into a major river by rain-triggered floods in northeast China's Jilin Province.Some 3,000 chemical-filled barrels and 4,000 empty ones fell into the Songhua River Wednesday morning after floods swamped the warehouses of two chemical companies in Jilin City, Jilin Province.The accident happened on the same day when Zhou Shengxian, minister of environmental protection, called for more steps to tackle pollution in the Songhua River while addressing a meeting on water pollution control.Though the river is facing the risk of being contaminated by chemicals, experts have concluded that the root cause of the accident is the irrational layout of chemical factories.MORE THAN 5,000 BARRELS RECOVERED AMID DIFFICULTIESMore than 5,000 of the 7,000 chemical barrels had been recovered as of 7 p.m. Saturday, local authorities said.Additionally, more than 10,000 soldiers and civilians have been stationed at 16 points in Jilin's Songyuan City, where the Songhua River enters Zhaoyuan City in the Heilongjiang Province; their task is to try and recover all the remaining barrels within the territory of Jilin Province.However, as the Fengman Dam, located on the upper reaches of the Songhua River, opened its floodgates Friday afternoon to discharge flood waters, the unrecovered barrels are now flowing faster down the river and it has become more difficult to retrieve them, said Professor Liu Guoliang, a chemist who is leading Heilongjiang's retrieval team.Experts are concerned that the chemical-filled barrels might explode if they slam into a dam at high speed, although the dams may be helpful in intercepting the barrels."The blue barrels are like time bombs. We don't know when any of them might explode," said Chen Yanpeng, a resident of Jilin's Yushu City, who has participated in the salvage work."In addition to retrieving the barrels, people should also consider why this has happened," Cheng said.

BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Saturday cautioned against more rain-triggered disasters such as flood and mudslide during the rain season, and demanded for strengthened preventive measures.Currently most parts of the nation is experiencing the flood season when geological disasters becomes rampant, especially in the mountainous areas in the western region, Hui told a national meeting on geological disaster prevention on Saturday.He said authorities should keep a clear mind on the grim situations and step up efforts to prevent and fight the disaster with scientific methods.Massive mudslides hit northwestern China's Zhouqu County in Gansu Province on Aug. 8, with death toll rising to 1,239 as of 4 p.m. Saturday, and 505 are still missing.On early Saturday, at least 38 people were missing after rain-triggered floods and landslides ravaged Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province, the epicenter of an 8.0 magnitude earthquake which left about 87,000 people dead or missing more than two years ago.Hui has called for all-out rescue efforts in Wenchuan County's mudslide. He asked local authorities to promptly evacuate residents, and speedily restore transport and telecommunication facilities in the area.The Vice Premier asked the local water, meteorological, and land authorities to closely monitor the situation and issue prompt forecasts and warnings on the floods and rain.Monitoring geological risks should be immediately launched in the towns, villages, and areas along roads and railway tracks, Hui said.Dangerous zones should be marked and people should be prevented from entering such risky areas.Hui said more work was needed to be done to ensure residents have food to eat and water to drink. Shelters and medical access should also be priorities for those affected.Further, the Vice Premier asked local officials to intensify hygiene work in order to prevent epidemics.
