SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With every other county in California reporting election results in 100 percent of precincts, San Diego County mysteriously lagged behind for more than 12 hours after polls closed Tuesday night.Riverside County's semi-final report of election results at 8:01 a.m. handed San Diego County the distinction of being the last county in the state without 100 percent of precincts reporting. The delay hindered the ability to officially call certain local races, like that of the San Diego City Council and the county Board of Supervisors, until the early afternoon.According to the San Diego County Registrar's Office, a technical glitch caused the delay.RELATED:  690

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A controversial retirement center proposed by Skyline Church is moving ahead following a San Diego Planning Commission vote Friday.Officials voted five to one in favor of advancing to the development to the next step.Church officials are looking to build the retirement center in the Valle De Oro neighborhood. It would be located on almost nine acres next to Skyline Church. The 232 units would be made up of independent and assistant living spaces. The facility would also have a walking trail, offices, a pool, and clinics. Those who are in support of this plan say it’s needed because of the growing aging community in the San Diego County. "This application is more than just a request. It’s asking the County’s permission to serve our community, by seeking your permission for this retirement center," said Pastor Dan Grant of Skyline Church.Opponents say this will cause traffic problems in an already congested location along I-94 just East of Via Mercado. They add, this would be a huge environmental impact on the area. Now that the Planning Commission has agreed to move forward, they will bring this recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. 1180

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Border Patrol agent was injured after someone threw a rock at his patrol car, according to US Customs and Border Protection. The agency tweeted out several photos Monday morning that show the agent with a large cut on his face and what appears to be shattered glass in the patrol car. “Our agents face dangers like this one while maintaining the security of our nation,” the agency said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) — Two men who were allegedly running an illegal hash oil lab inside a Lemon Grove warehouse were charged by federal prosecutors Friday.Adam Ledesma and Jared Hoffman are charged with manufacturing around 166 kilograms of hash oil inside the building raided by Drug Enforcement Administration agents on Thursday. The hash oil, valued at more than .75 million, was seized along with ``sophisticated laboratory equipment'' valued at more than million, according to the DEA.In the criminal complaint filed Friday, DEA Special Agent James Gillis wrote that DEA agents regularly surveilled the building over the past month, and observed Ledesma and Hoffman regularly entering the building. There were ``no visible indications of commercial or manufacturing operations operating out of the building,'' according to Gillis, who said that on May 14, he found a number of paint buckets, stainless steel pots and other items he alleged were consistent with manufacturing cannabis inside two dumpsters in the building's loading dock. The building's electricity bills dating back to last May were also ``excessive and consistent with the amount of electricity required to operate equipment commonly used for concentrated cannabis extraction and/or indoor marijuana cultivation.''Search warrants were served Thursday for the premises, which has no license for marijuana cultivation from either the state or San Diego County, according to the DEA.Authorities said it was the sixth hash oil lab in San Diego County dismantled by federal authorities within the past three weeks. Explosions at two of those labs sent four people to hospitals with serious burns, the DEA said. The agency alleged that the Lemon Grove lab was in particular danger of an explosion or fire, due to high combustible gas readings at the premises, as well as a large amount of ethanol found at the lab. 1886

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two researchers, including one from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, are in Antarctica in an effort to uncover the planet's oldest ice.The research trip is part of a cordial international race to find the ice, which will give geologists and climate scientists new insight into Earth's climate history. Scripps paleoclimatologist Jeff Severinghaus and University of Minnesota-Deluth geologist John Goodge arrived this month at an ice-drilling outpost at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. In October, Severinghaus and researchers at Princeton University published a study in the journal Nature analyzing a two-million-year-old ice core. However, that core was incomplete in its historical portrait of ancient air. According to Severinghaus' ice dating lab, the planet's oldest ice is roughly 2.7 million years old.RELATED: San Diego Zoo welcomes second rhino born via artificial inseminationSeaWorld frees whale tangled in 900 feet of rope off La JollaSan Diegans can fly over rush-hour traffic with FLOAT air service"That core ... was all broken up," Severinghaus said of the Princeton study. "It's like in archaeology when you find pieces of broken pottery you're trying to put back together."The two researchers are attempting to expedite the conventional ice drilling process, which currently takes roughly five years to dig two miles to the Antarctic ice shelf's deepest point. They believe their 50-ton drill could secure a 50-meter ice core with a full timeline of the continent's geologic development. Eventually, it could be used to dig to the continent's bedrock, which dates back 3 billion years. In addition to each other, geologists and climate scientists in the southern hemisphere are in a race against nature, as climate change continues to melt Antarctic ice and cause sea levels to rise, particularly on the continent's western edge, according to Goodge."The bigger question is what's happening in East Antarctica because there's a lot more sea level rise potential if it begins to melt as well," he said. "So we really need to understand what those conditions are."Once collected, the researchers will pack the ice samples in boxes until January, when the Antarctic sea ice thaws and the samples can be shipped to Port Hueneme in Ventura County. They will then be transported to the National Science Foundation's Ice Core Facility in Lakewood, Colorado, for study in late spring. 2439
