The coronavirus pandemic put the country on pause, but now that some cities and states are opening back up, what will that mean for the future of events?Kamron Khan has a lot of thoughts about that question. The professional photographer owns Kamron Khan Photography based in Cleveland and usually photographs large events, with hundreds of people that are booked a year or more in advance.That was until the novel coronavirus pandemic hit, and suddenly she found that one event after the next was rescheduled indefinitely or canceled all together.“It’s been really tough from thinking I was going to have one of my best years ever to no income,” said Khan.Everything from the 2020 Olympics to the remainder of the NBA season, the lights of Broadway to the lights of Hollywood – big events, and events that are only big to those involved have been postponed or canceled around the world.Khan, despite the drop in income, said she understands the caution.“I'm very concerned because I get a lot of these events that people are having, are big life moments - weddings to baby showers - you have all of these different types of things and you want to celebrate and I get that, but sometimes people just need to take a step back and realize ‘Hey you know what, why don't we celebrate next year? Why don’t we just keep it small, wait for things to die down?’ And I in no way think anyone's overreacting, but I would rather overreact and cancel things now than to have things go downhill and then it be much worse,” said Khan.She said right now she has a hard time imagining when events with hundreds of people will be commonplace again.“Right now, I can't until [infections] really change and really start going down in a downward trend. I can't even think about having these large gatherings and I think a lot of people don't want to anyway. Even if we were allowed to,” said Khan.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued guidance about big gatherings now and in the future. The CDC suggests that event organizers do things like provide supplies to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including hand sanitizer and disposable facemasks. The CDC also urged event organizers to discourage people who are vulnerable to the disease -- like older adults – from coming to events at all.The guidance also states that, “Organizers should continually assess, based on current conditions, whether to postpone, cancel, or significantly reduce the number of attendees (if possible) for mass gatherings.”Nick Borelli, a marketing and live event expert, said that at least in the next year or so, people should expect to see smaller, more local events. He said those first events will also likely have cultural significance – like a city’s celebration or a big concert – rather than a conference or trade show.Borelli also said that in order for people to gain confidence going to events again, any initial events would need to be successful - with no new infection clusters.“If [cultural events] happen, it will just happen with an increased amount of trust, knowing that people want things to be the way that they were. So there is the push for what the bias is a confirmation bias. They want things to be that way, they're just looking for it,” said Borelli.He also said that as far as virtual events go, it’s easy to see which events will likely stay virtual in the future by looking at how different industries are planning right now.“Weddings are being postponed with the hopes to come back as they were,” said Borelli. “Corporate is making a move to adjust things to the cliché of new normal, which at the very least, be a world of hybrid [partially online and partially in person] for quite some time and probably sticking to a percentage of that.”Those virtual events offer their own unique challenges and triumphs. There isn’t that real, in-person interaction, but there is the potential to reach more people who may not have been able to take time off or afford to go to a conference.Borelli also said right now offers a great opportunity to gather data about the events that are happening online right now – to better see what things work better virtually.“I think that depending on the data that we collect in this time, and then also in the time that comes next, we can potentially prove our value in a black and white way that we never able to before,” said Borelli.For those in the event industry right now Borelli acknowledged that there is pain and not everyone will survive. And for those who do survive, it will look and be different for a long time.Khan said her new normal will – among other things – mean wearing a mask for the foreseeable future.“For myself, I'll definitely be wearing a mask whether I'm photographing people inside or outside, I just want to,” said Khan. “Not just protect myself, but I want to show others how people look at me and realize I'm doing everything that I need to be doing.” 4928
The CDC is considering changing its quarantine guidelines for those who have been in close contact with someone who is infected with the coronavirus.Currently, those who have been in close contact with someone infected with the virus would be advised to quarantine for 14 days. Possible new guidance would shorten the quarantine period to 10 days. At the end of the 10-day period, a test would be need to end quarantine.In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Adm. Brett Giroir, the assistant secretary for health at Health and Human Services, explains why a 10-day quarantine might be more effective at getting more compliance with the guidance."People are much more likely to listen to a 10-day quarantine than they are a 14-day quarantine,” Giroir said. “If we can shorten it safely with most risk because we have a quarantine plus a test, we have a lot of tests available now, that might improve our public health responses.”Giroir stressed that final guidelines have not been approved, and the current guidance still calls for a 14-day quarantine.“It's not an announcement that is happening but we are reviewing it and the CDC team is modeling it and looking at data every day,” Giroir said.“And it may change or it may not. Just depends on where the data and the evidence wind up." According to the CDC, a person can become infected with the virus up to 14 days following exposure. But researchers say most illnesses begin five to seven days after COVID-19 exposure.A close contact is considered someone who is within 6 feet of someone with the virus for a period of 15 minutes or more over the course of a day. 1626
The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the Justice Department on Thursday seeking documents related to a trio of recent controversial decisions made by the FBI, including the decision in 2016 to not charge Hillary Clinton after the probe of her email server and the internal recommendation by an FBI office to fire former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, his office announced.The move by Virginia Republican Bob Goodlatte represents a ratcheting up of his investigation, led jointly with the House Oversight Committee, into the decisions made by the Justice Department and the FBI before the 2016 election -- an investigation that has stoked mistrust of the law enforcement agency and drawn the ire of Democrats on Capitol Hill.In a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein accompanying the subpoena, Goodlatte wrote, "given the Department's ongoing delays in producing these documents, I am left with no choice but to issue the enclosed subpoena to compel production of these documents."Goodlatte had in recent weeks voiced his frustration at the Justice Department's refusal to comply with his past requests for the documents and hinted at the weighty legal maneuver.The two committees had requested 1.2 million pages of documents from the Justice Department, Goodlatte's office said. The Equifax data breach was bad for a lot of people but good for a few companies that sell identity theft protection.The hack, which Equifax announced last Thursday, exposed Social Security numbers, drivers licenses and other personal information of 143 million people. And that was just in the United States.Equifax said people in the U.K. and Canada were also affected by the data breach, but it hasn't said how many. Equifax says it has records on more than 800 million people worldwide.Demand for identity theft protection just went up. A lot.One company, LifeLock says it has gotten over 100,000 customer signups since the Equifax news broke. It said it's enrolling 10 times as many customers every hour now as a result.The Equifax breach was not the largest ever, but it was notable for the kind of information that was put at risk.LifeLock says its increase in business is greater than it was after two other big breaches -- an attack on Yahoo last year and one in 2015 against insurance giant Anthem."We've had more people sign up for LifeLock in the past three days than during the entire Yahoo or Anthem breaches," Fran Rosch, executive VP and GM of Symantec's consumer business unit, told CNN Tech on Monday.LifeLock sells identity protection like credit monitoring, black market surveillance, stolen fund reimbursements, crimes committed in your name, and fake identity monitoring. Its service costs between .99 to .99 a month.Another company that says it has seen an uptick in business is CreditKarma, which provides free credit reports and monitoring. It told CNN Tech it saw a 50% increase in signups over the weekend and a 50% increase in search traffic.CreditKarma analyzes credit profiles, suggesting product recommendations to help users save money. If you take its recommendations, it then makes a cut from the bank or lender behind the product.Equifax itself is in the fraud alert business. It has a host of products under the Equifax brand, as well as an offshoot called TrustedID. In the wake of the data breach, it is offering one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection with TrustedID Premier. It clarified this week that those who sign up will not be automatically renewed and charged.Of course, a year of the TrustedID service for free could be enough to convince some customers to renew and start paying."They can exploit this breach to market to consumers who never had to worry about their credit report before," said Amanda Werner, campaign manager with Americans for Financial Reform and Public Citizen.Equifax did not respond to a request for comment for this article.Experts warn that one year is not enough to cover the damage caused by the breach on consumers."Criminals will certainly try to monetize the leaked data and perform ID theft for far longer than one year after this attack," Katie Moussouris, founder of Luta Security, told CNN Tech.Bill Kowlaski, director of operations at Rehmann Corporate Investigative Services and a former FBI agent, agrees. "You're basically required ... to be extra diligent for the rest of your life."The identity theft protection market is expected to bring in .8 billion in revenue this year, according to research from IBISWorld. LifeLock has 24% of the market, with a company called Intersections owning the next biggest share, 6%.
