BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- A 66-member Chinese rescue and relief team sent to provide immediate assistance to flood ravaged Pakistan returned from the Pakistani port city Karachi to Beijing by charter flight Monday, officials said.China sent two rescue and relief missions to flood-afflicted Pakistan since the end of July when floods began taking their toll, said officials from China Southern Airlines Company Limited, which transported the team.The return of these 66 members, including medical workers, experts from the China Earthquake Administration, rescue soldiers as well as journalists, marked the end of the two rescue missions, noted officials.In response to the worst flooding in Pakistan's recent history, China's help included monetary assistance, urgently needed relief goods delivered directly to affected areas, a convoy of 101 trucks to the northern parts of Pakistan, two rescue and relief missions for providing medical relief to the victims, four military helicopters for carrying out rescue missions and an additional 200 million U.S. dollars for post-disaster reconstruction besides the previous 320 million yuan (47 million U.S. dollars) worth of humanitarian supplies.

XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign trade surplus was approximately 84 billion U.S. dollars from Jan. to July, down 20 percent year on year, and the year 2010 is expected to see a small trade surplus, said Commerce Minister Chen Deming on Tuesday.Chen made the projection at the ongoing World Investment Forum that runs from Sept. 7 to 9 in southeast China's coastal city of Xiamen.China has seen a trade surplus in recent years, but with a decreasing margin, and the trade surplus takes up a very small proportion of the GDP, noted Chen."China's foreign trade policy aims to stabilize exports and increase imports, which can boost China's economy and also bring positive impacts to neighboring countries," said Chen.Customs statistics show that China's import and export value in the first seven months reached 1,617 billion U.S. dollars, with exports worth 850.5 billion U.S. dollars, up 35.6 percent, and imports at 766.6 billion U.S. dollars, up by 47.2 percent.China's trade surplus in 2009 was more than 190 billion U.S. dollars, down 34.4 percent from the 290 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.The World Investment Forum is the global meeting on investment and development issues organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The central parity rate of the yuan, China's currency Renminbi (RMB), dropped 43 basis points Tuesday to 6.6775 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Tuesday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by 2.19 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.The PBOC released the yuan's central parity rates against a basket of currencies -- the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen, the Hong Kong dollar, the British pound and the Malaysian Ringgit.The yuan's parity rate against the euro was set by the central bank at 9.2574 Tuesday, higher from 9.3215 on Oct. 11, the previous trading day.The yuan's rate against 100 yen was 8.124 Tuesday, compared with 8.1276 on Monday.The yuan's rate against the British pound was 10.6042, compared with 10.6311 on the previous trading day.The central parity of RMB against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of enquired prices from all market makers before the opening of the market in each business day.The central parity of RMB against the other five currencies is based on the central rate of RMB against the U.S. dollar of the same business day as well as the exchange rates of the five currencies against the U.S. dollar at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) of the same business day in the international foreign exchange market.
