BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- In an unexceptional courtyard on the street behind Jingshan Hill in central Beijing, two Chinese pines stand side by side.     This was the residence of Zhuo Lin, widow of China's late leader Deng Xiaoping. On Wednesday, she passed away, aged 93. Deng was also 93 when he died 12 years ago.     To complete the last trip with her beloved husband, Zhuo chose to have her ashes scattered at sea as her husband's were. File photo shows Zhuo Lin (R) poses with her husband Deng Xiaoping in the Taihang Mountains, after they married in Yan'an. Zhuo Lin, a former consultant of the Central Military Commission General Office and widow of China's late leader Deng Xiaoping, died of illness at 12:30 p.m. July 29 after medical treatment failed in Beijing, at the age of 93    TOGETHER THROUGH LIFE     Born in southwestern Yunnan Province, she joined the Communist Party of China in 1938 and was a former consultant of the Central Military Commission General Office.     She met Deng in the revolutionary shrine Yan'an in 1939 and had accompanied him throughout his extraordinary life, from the Anti-Japanese War from late 1930s to the 1940s to his dark days of repression in the "Cultural Revolution" from 1966 to 1976. File photo shows Zhuo Lin (2nd R) reads a story for her grandson while her husband Deng Xiaoping (L) reads newspaper at their home in Beijing, after Deng retired. BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao called on diplomats to play a bigger role in serving the country's reform and national interests as China is seeking a stable and rapid development amid global economic downturn.     "China is at a crucial moment in dealing with the financial crisis and maintaining rapid economic development ... diplomacy must better serve the overall situation of reform, development and stability," said Hu while addressing a national meeting attended by diplomatic envoys, which ended Monday in Beijing. Chinese President Hu Jintao (L Front) meets with the participants of a meeting for Chinese diplomats prior to the meeting in Beijing, capital of China, July 17, 2009. The 11th meeting for Chinese diplomats was held in Beijing on July 17-20.The nine members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao, attended the meeting.     "Under the new situation, diplomacy must rely on, serve and promote the development. It should focus on the task of ensuring growth, people's life and stability," He said.     Hu urged Chinese envoys to join the global efforts for promoting economic growth, safeguard national sovereignty and security, firmly follow the one-China policy and maintain stability.     China will stick to the independent foreign policy of peace, pursue the path of peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all the countries in line with the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, Hu said.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also addressed the meeting, saying "the recovery of the global economy will be a slow process with twists and turns, there must be a long-term preparedness to effectively deal with (the global downturn)".     The global financial crisis has plunged the world into deep recession, and it's difficult to say the global downturn has reached the bottom, Wen said.

LONDON, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Finance Minister Xie Xuren said on Friday that the current economic stimulus measures should be maintained to ensure economic recovery and growth worldwide.     After a BRIC-country meeting held in London, Xie told a news conference that the four countries are now at a key stage of economic recovery, and should strengthen their coordination of economic policy.     The finance ministers and central bank governors of Brazil, Russia, India and China, the so-called BRIC countries, gathered in London on Friday to discuss the current situation of the world economy, as well as their governments' fiscal and monetary policy responses.     Xie stressed that promoting the reform of international financial institutions is a common consensus reached at the G20 summit held in London in April, adding that "we must put it into practice in accordance with the timetable."     The Chinese minister also called on the international community to attach great importance to the imbalance between the North and the South, and to further help developing countries realize common development, so as to achieve a fundamental balance and sustainable growth of the global economy. Alexey Kudrin (2nd L), Xie Xuren (4th L), Guido Mantega (4th R) and Pranab Mukherjee (2nd R), finance ministers from Russia, China, Brazil and India, have a group photo taken with other attendees prior to their meeting in London, capital of the U.K., Sept. 4, 2009. Officials from Brazil, Russia and India echoed Xie's opinion, saying that they hoped the G20 countries would not abandon their fiscal stimulus packages too early.     They vowed to make more efforts to maintain world trade growth and sustainable economic growth, and looked forward to strengthening the role of the new emerging countries in the international financial institutions.     During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting to be held this weekend, the BRIC officials "noted the key role that the G20 has played as the focal point in the coordination of international responses to the global crisis and exchanged views on the reform of international financial institutions."     The officials agreed that emerging market economies have shown resilience and helped the world economy absorb the impact of the deterioration of trade, credit flows and demand. In many of them, growth is already back on track after a few quarters of recession or slowdown. Chinese Finance Minister Xie Xuren (2nd R) speaks at a press conference after meeting with his counterparts from Rissa, Brazil and India in London, capital of the U.K., Sept. 4, 2009. Despite these positive signs, it is too early to declare the end of the crisis. The global economy still face great uncertainty, and significant risks remain to economic and financial stability, they said.     The BRIC countries called on the G20 countries to continue to implement countercyclical fiscal and monetary policies in a sustainable and internationally-coordinated manner, and take effective measures to guard against potential economic risks while respecting the particular conditions of each country.
