SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Community Resource Center, a non-profit dedicated to helping families in need, was able to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and deliver holiday happiness to North County families.Every year, the CRC does their annual "Holiday Baskets" program, where families in need get a shopping spree-style day at the Del Mar Fairgrounds to get food, toys, clothing, and more for the holidays. But in 2020, the pandemic made the annual shopping spree impossible because of state and county health guidelines. So the CRC changed things up a bit, turning the event into a drive-thru.Now, instead of walking through a shopping area and picking out items, families will drive through the fairgrounds and have things handed to them in their cars."We'll have a pre-made box of food for each family, we'll have pre-made boxes of blankets for each family, and a pre-made box with family gifts," says CRC CEO John Van Cleef. "So the ability to choose gifts has changed this year, but we'll be providing puzzles, board games, and other family-based gifts."Because of the changes, the CRC could only assist 1,100 families, which is down from their usual 1,600.It may have been even fewer if not for the help of a 15-year old girl."There's always a way that we can help each other out," says Lucie Babcock, who has been volunteering with the CRC since she was 9.For the past five years, Lucie has held bake sales or lemonade stands to raise money for the CRC. She then uses the money to buy toys and gifts for the families.Because of the Pandemic, she couldn't do her usual fundraising.Instead, Lucie wrote letters to family and friends asking for donations. She raised 0."Even if it seems like maybe you don't have the connections to make a difference, there's always a way," she says.Van Cleef says people like Lucie inspire him to keep helping others. The Holiday Baskets event is Saturday, Dec. 4, but families must pre-register to participate. 1952

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Infinite Chemical Analysis Lab building in Miramar looks like any other chemical lab, but inside the products they are testing are all cannabis. InfiniteCal tests products for things like potency, pesticides, heavy metals and microbial analysis to make sure the products are safe for consumption and meet state standards. Josh Swider is the CEO and co-founder. Swider's company consists of roughly 45 employees, 30 of those are either chemists or biologists. The team tests products for licensed retailers to make sure their cannabis meets the standard for what is allowed by the state. When it comes to vaping, Swider says their analysis shows that what's making people sick is when the product is diluted, most recently with Vitamin E or Vitamin E acetate. According to the CDC, 33 people have died from lung related illnesses linked to e-ciggarettes or vaping products. Most of those samples tested by the FDA had THC. San Diego County has confirmed 22 vape related illnesses in the county. Although InfiniteCal doesn't just test products for vaping, Swider says the best thing a person can do is to do their research and make sure they are buying from a licensed retailer. He also recommends asking the business for their certificate of analysis to find out what's in the cannabis product they're consuming. InfiniteCal operates six days a week and also will tests an individual consumer's product if they show up to the lab. The company is expanding to a location four times it's current size by the end of the year. 1554

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Appeals Court put a stay on the release of a sexually violent predator known as "Bolder than Most" rapist. Back in June 2019, a San Diego County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of conditional release for a sexually violent predator. Judge David M. Gill made the controversial decision for Alvin Ray Quarles, 56.Mary Taylor is a survivor and says she's hopeful with the appeals court stepping in, "we've been hopeful in the past, but this is actually a court saying wait a minute lets look at this." Up until this week, things were moving forward as the search for a place to release Quarles in San Diego County continued. Monday afternoon, Taylor got a call from the deputy district attorney saying they filed for a writ and it had been approved. A writ is similar to an appeal. The California Appeals Court issued a stay. Now, all progress towards finding Quarles a location has stopped and cannot continue again until the courts resolve the appeal. In the meantime, Quarles will stay at the Coalinga State Hospital getting treatment through a program for sexually violent predators. 1131

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The North County Transit District announced plans last week to expand the COASTER rail line to the downtown convention center. The San Diego Pathing Study outlined the plan to bring COASTER service to the convention center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community of Barrio Logan welcomed residents to shop in the streets after months of coronavirus’ impact. Saturday, Aug. 4, the “Walk the Block” event debuted. Local businesses got permits to move service outdoors to the sidewalk, and the event celebrated the community’s resurgence of business with food, specialty items and music.Business owners like Stephanie, who runs Dreamers and Hustlers Company, a clothing shop with items branded toward the namesake, said the past few months have been hard, but she’s confident Barrio Logan shops will bounce back.“Even during these times we figure out ways we can pick ourselves up and get going again,” she said.Edgar Flores said his shop, Maxa Market, sells products made by local small businesses and entrepreneurs. He’s been able to continue with online sales but said he’s excited to be restocking his storefront and welcoming back in-person customers.“It’s all about being a community, all the people getting together doing this, doing the walkabout,” he said. The Walk the Block event will occur every Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. on Logan Ave. between Chicano Park and 26th St. Masks and social distancing are required. 1200
