SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- As more people grow weary of the coronavirus pandemic, the race is on to get more test kits in the hands of medical professionals. Sorrento Valley's Hologic Diagnostic Solutions is making a big dent in the test kit shortage. Staying at home and away from others is Gov, Gavin Newsom's hope to curb the spread of COVID-19. But that does not curb fear. Many San Diegans still wish to get tested, but health officials say there just isn't enough. RELATED: FDA warns of fake coronavirus home test kits“The testing situation is frustrating for everyone," Dr. Eric McDonald, Medical Director of Epidemiology and Immunization of San Diego County, said. "There is a shortage of kits.”Since the Chinese government released the COVID-19 genetic sequencing on Jan. 8, 2020, medical diagnostics companies have been working around the clock to invent a new, efficient test. One of those is Hologic Diagnostic Solutions in Sorrento Valley. "We started doing exploratory science to figure out, what is the virus, and what can we do to help?" Kevin Thornal, President of Hologic Diagnostic Solutions, said.RELATED: Q and A: Fo

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two tropical storms bearing down on the Eastern Pacific have forced a Norwegian Bliss cruise ship to abandon its original route and stop in San Diego. The stopover for the cruise ship came just before 7 a.m. Wednesday. The ship was originally scheduled to sail from Los Angeles to several ports in Mexico but was forced to change that route due to tropical storms Willa and Vicente. The new route has the cruise ship heading for San Francisco to San Diego to Ensenada, Mexico. The ship is scheduled to depart from San Diego at 6 p.m. Wednesday.Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement that guests were alerted to the modified itinerary as soon as possible."Due to Hurricane Willa and Tropical Storm Vincente in the Eastern Pacific, we modified Norwegian Bliss’ itinerary from Los Angeles," the cruise line said. "Our onboard team is working to ensure the best vacation experience possible given these weather-related changes."Tropical storm Willa was downgraded from a Category 5 Hurricane Wednesday, but still made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph. Vicente was due to follow Willa moving inland over Mexico.RELATED: Cruise industry booming as season begins in San DiegoThe Norwegian Bliss is one of Norwegian Cruise Line's newest vessels in service. The ship can hold more than 4,000 guests, 1,700 crew members, and includes an aqua park, laser tag arena, casino, and a two-level race track — the first for a North American-based ship. Each port of call has an approximate 0,000 impact in San Diego, according to port officials. The port expects 92 ships to dock in San Diego this year, bringing more than 295,000 passengers to town. 1698

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While fall-like temperatures lingered around San Diego County for a few days, a heatwave is on the way.Above-average temperatures are expected throughout the week with a heat advisory in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday through 5 p.m. Friday. With many people still working and learning from home, you may have noticed higher energy usage on your electricity bill.“We’re dealing with some unusual and extreme situations this year given the COVID-19 pandemic and also extreme temperatures,” said Jessica Packard, communications manager for San Diego Gas and Electric (SDGE). “Look at conserving energy when you can, I know that’s easier said than done.”She said the key to bringing down that SDG&E bill is to avoid energy usage between 4 and 9 p.m.This time spent working from home can also come in handy.“If you are home working, try to maybe run the dishwasher during your lunch hour when you normally wouldn’t because you’d be in the office,” she said.To help during this pandemic, SDG&E has suspended service disconnections for those who can’t afford to pay their utility bill. SDG&E is also offering flexible payment plans.Based on annual household income, people who qualify can also sign up for state and federal programs to get discounts on monthly energy bills.“Look at some of our customer programs and assistance options if you’re really struggling and want us to cater maybe something to help you get through this difficult time,” said Packard. The hot and dry conditions across the county also cause fire concerns to grow. Firefighting agencies are asking everyone to remain cautious and avoid doing anything that can spark a fire.Right now, Packard said there is no need for Public Safety Power Shutoffs, but SDG&E meteorologists track and monitor the weather conditions daily in case there is a change.“At SDG&E, we really don’t want to turn off your power,” she said. “We try to give at least 48 hours’ notice in advance. It has nothing to do with high usage, but more on the high fire threat districts that say Santa Ana winds are coming through, we need to protect your house and the powerlines, should Santa Ana winds impact powerlines.” 2195
