SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A global recruitment company tells 10News there is a concern that the healthcare system is going to be over-run by patients.It brings up questions whether San Diego County has enough nurses to staff hospitals and medical centers if the coronavirus pandemic goes on for an extended period."The problem that we're seeing now, post-pandemic and coronavirus, is that those nurses can't flock to any one area to support people because the problem is, they have to support locally where they are," said Jon Griffith with the recruitment company GQR. Griffith explained there were supply and demand issues with nurses before COVID-19. Now travel nurses, who would typically fill the void are needed in every state, and not necessarily available to travel."We're seeing people called out of retirement," he said. "Nurses and physicians alike being requested to come out and support. Essentially what we're trying to do at GQR is to tap into those resources or new grad nurses, retired nurses, wherever we can to give that local support to these hospitals to try and mitigate that risk."Griffith told 10News the hospitals they've spoken with are aware of potential challenges and are gearing up to make sure people have their healthcare needs met."They are heroes alright," Griffith said. "We see this all on social media. They are on the frontlines still giving great patient care and focusing on that continuity of care and that right there is what this is all about. But nurses have that fear of being understaffed and hospitals are really trying to rise to that challenge right now."10News asked healthcare providers across San Diego County how they will maintain staffing levels as nurses get sick or burned out, and if they have enough staff to backfill any vacancies.Here are the responses we got back.Sharp Healthcare:Yes, definitely a consideration given the unknowns around how long the COVID-19 outbreak will last. Because elective and non-emergent procedures are canceled, that frees up personnel who may be needed to backfill in other areas.UC San Diego HealthYes, we have a comprehensive plan for staffing our hospitals and clinics throughout the pandemic. In addition to a workforce of more than 2,900 nurses, we have access to additional nurse travelers and registry nurses to quickly flex up as needed. Our operational command centers monitor all personnel needs and deploy caregivers and resources across our health system in real time. Kaiser PermanenteWe are working with our public health partners to manage all aspects of the health care delivery continuum, and so far, our plans are working even as conditions, needs and priorities change. As we do every flu season, we have contingency plans in place to manage both higher numbers of patients in our facilities and illness among staff. Out of extreme caution as we respond to the challenge of coronavirus, employees who may have been exposed to the virus will remain at home for a 14-day observation period. We are able to manage this in part with fully licensed or certified seasonal contract staff. And because we are a fully integrated health care system, we have the ability to move staff from one facility to another and to adjust work schedules as needs dictate. We appreciate the flexibility and willingness to help among all of our team members.Scripps HealthScripps Health is currently recruiting for registered nurses and other key patient care roles as the impact of COVID-19 continues to play out. We have extended all current agency and traveler contracts through the end of May to ensure we have consistent coverage. Our Employee Assistance Program continues to work with our caregivers to help manage stress and burnout, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction sessions.In a sign of our commitment to the safety of our employees and patients, we have shifted our interview processes to be completely virtual so that applicants are not coming on our campuses. Also, our new employee orientation is now being conducted online so that we can minimize group sizes and practice social distancing where possible for caregivers.Do we have enough nurses currently to back fill the vacancies we expect?We are focused on protecting our workforce so they can safely treat our patients. We continue to recruit high-caliber candidates in the roles we anticipate needing and fast track the rehire process for those wanting to return to Scripps. Our nursing leadership is developing scenarios to better understand what roles may be needed in the future and how we staff up or cross-train clinicians to fill those potential gaps. We are looking at how our clinic and outpatient staff might be utilized in the hospital setting. We have established a labor pool of staffing that will better enable us to meet the needs of increased hospitalizations. We are also actively assessing roles to evaluate where there may be crossover of skills among nursing disciplines, which can effectively broaden our availability of nurses. If we don’t, where will that manpower come from?We have strong partnerships with several traveler and agency firms to assist in urgent placements. We are partnering with the state and the California Hospital Association in loosening restrictions on out-of-state licensed clinicians and student nurses as well. 5325

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Carlsbad mother believes the social isolation created by the pandemic was one factor in the suicide attempt of her 11-year-old son.A photo shows Jessie, 11, playing tetherball outside her home two Thursdays ago. Hours after the photo was taken, his mother Tara says her son vomited.Soon after, an ambulance was rushing him to the hospital. In her kitchen cupboard was a nearly empty Costco-sized bottle of ibuprofen."It was a 500-pill bottle, and we estimate he took 400 pills," said Tara.At the hospital, Jesse couldn't breathe on his own. His kidneys failed, but doctors were able to save Jesse."It's a miracle, so thankful," said a tearful Tara.The grateful mother is now in search of answers. She talked to her son in the hospital."He said he didn't see that there was much worth living for. He felt like there were too many things stacked up against him," said Tara.Tara believes one of those things has been the social isolation caused by the pandemic. After his family moved, Jesse ended up after a new school in the fall. Tara says his old friends 'ghosted' him."I would encourage him to try to make friends in the neighborhood, and he'd say things like 'Why bother?'" said Tara.Tara thought he was just getting adjusted. Stan Colllins, a suicide prevention specialist with the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council, says social isolation can cut kids off from the support they lean on to deal with stressors, big and small."We do have data to show there has been an increase in suicidal thoughts among youth," said Collins.In Jesse's case, those thoughts led to action. Tara says she's sharing her family's story in hopes of helping another family."Please lock up your medicaton ... Talk to your kids and see how they're doing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A driver was shot while traveling on a Clairemont street Thursday night, according to police.At around 10:30 p.m., a man was driving in the 5800 block of Chateau Drive when he was hit by gunfire, San Diego police said.ABC 10News learned the injured man was able to drive a few blocks before the SUV crashed into an electrical box in front of San Diego Fire-Rescue Station 36.Firefighters and paramedics at the station heard the crash and rushed to help the victim, who had at least one gunshot wound on his upper body.The unidentified victim was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, but his condition is unknown as of 9 a.m. Friday.Police said witnesses reported seeing a silver 4-door sedan leaving the shooting scene. 743

  

San Diego (KGTV) -- A 41-year-old woman suffered serious injuries Monday night when she was hit by an SUV while crossing the street in Pacific Beach.Police say the collision happened shortly before 10:40 p.m. on Grand Avenue west of Mission Bay Drive.A 24-year-old woman was driving a 2018 Jeep Cherokee eastbound of Grand Avenue while the victim was crossing the street southbound, then stepped off the center median and was struck by the Jeep. Paramedics took the victim to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with major injuries. She is expected to survive.The driver remained at the scene. 591

  

iday by the state Employment Development Department.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 20,500 jobs -- from 1,350,800 to 1,371,300 -- while farm employment added 100 jobs, from 9,500 to 9,600.The coronavirus pandemic and related job losses loom large over the economy even as some industries resume business. The unemployment rate at this time last year was 3.4% and was just 3.1% in February, less than a third of the current rate.While the decreasing unemployment is a positive sign, it did arrive partially because fewer people are looking for work."Many San Diegans are battling difficult choices in the work-life balance," said Phil Blair, executive officer of Manpower West. "We are seeing companies offering high-paying jobs -- such as engineers and programmers -- and lower-paying jobs -- such as production line workers. The problem is that, whether someone can make or per hour, people are worried about safety and taking care of kids at home. Employers need to recognize employee concerns and meet them halfway."The data from the EDD does not reflect changing reopening tiers, or the fact that San Diego County could roll back reopenings by as soon as Tuesday because of rising COVID-19 numbers, which could throw the entire economy into a state similar to the months of March, April and May.Lynn Reaser, chief economist for the Fermanian Business & Economic Institute at Point Loma Nazarene University, said the county isn't out of trouble yet."Following the relatively good news from August, the job market could get much tougher as we move into fall," she said. "San Diego could be pushed back into California's purple zone, the most restrictive one for business based on the governor's new ranking for COVID-19 risk."The region's unemployment rate rose to a record 15% in May, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments shows rates of nearly 30% in May.In August, the state's unemployment rate dropped to 11.6% from 13.7% and the nation's decreased to 8.5% from 10.5%.Government jobs led in local gains, with 6,800 jobs added to the region's total. Professional and business services gained 5,300 jobs, construction gained 3,100, trade, transportation and utilities 2,600, other services 1,200, educational and health services 1,000 and financial activities and manufacturing both gained 500 jobs.Leisure and hospitality and information were the only industries to post job losses, with 400 and 100 jobs lost, respectively.Comparing year-over-year, the San Diego region has lost 135,800 non- farm jobs and 400 agricultural jobs. Leisure and hospitality continue to top the list in jobs lost, with a total of 60,100 jobs lost since last August -- 43,900 of which came in accommodation and food services.Since the same time last year, trade, transportation and utilities shed 17,100 jobs, government lost 15,400, educational and health services 13,000, other services 12,000, manufacturing 7,200, information 3,800, construction 3,600, financial activities 3,300 and professional and business services lost 300 jobs. 3286
