The Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill was evacuated after an alarm sounded. But it was given an all-clear a short time later. There are no reports yet on why and whether it was related to the string of explosive devices being received by politicians and media throughout the nation this week. The Hill reports the alarm went off and people were urged to calmly evacuate. Nearby Independence Avenue was shut down as authorities investigated. The building was built in Washington D.C. in 1908, according to the Architect of the Capitol website. In 1962, the building was named for former Speaker of the House Joseph Gurney Cannon. It's located just south of the Capitol Building.  709

The Department of Justice announced Thursday that 57 people have been arrested across the country for fraud related to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).In a press conference Thursday, officials with the Department of Justice said that the suspects attempted to steal millions of dollars of taxpayer money. The PPP was established in the CARES Act, a stimulus package signed into law in March amid the coronavirus pandemic. The funds were meant to be used by small businesses to keep their businesses afloat.Officials said some of those arrested used the funds to buy "flashy or expensive" luxury items for themselves, rather than use the funds for their businesses. The DOJ also described that some of the suspects were part of "coordinated criminal rings" meant to obtain the funds through fraud. While officials did not put a specific dollar amount on the amount of funds stolen, officials called the number "significant." The DOJ says that it was able to seize or freeze million in funds provided through the PPP.This story is breaking and will be updated. 1074

The founder and CEO of a fitness business in Phoenix says he intends to file a lawsuit against Governor Ducey in response to his executive order closing select businesses. The executive order said that as of 8 p.m. Monday night, gyms, bars, waterparks and tubing areas will all have to close to try to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.Tom Hatten, Mountainside Fitness CEO, said during a press conference Monday that the governor’s move is "arbitrary" and lacks clarity.“If this is truly as bad as we are being told, I don’t think health clubs closing tomorrow is going to solve the problem. I don’t think tubing is going to solve the problem,” Hatten said. “I don’t think closing a movie theater that hasn’t been open is going to solve the problem.”Hatten also called for unity from the governor, saying that if the governor is serious about coronavirus, the executive order shouldn't be limited to bars, gyms, and movie theaters.A representative for Mountainside Fitness says several other large gyms are taking part in the lawsuit as well, though that has not been confirmed with the other gyms.Dozens of members showed up to work out at Mountainside Fitness as soon as it opened Tuesday morning. Those like John Kiesewetter say they agree with the CEO's reasoning to remain open if other businesses aren't also forced to close. He says regular physical activity puts them in a better position to beat the virus."It seems to be unfair that things like casinos are still open but gyms, they are not. So, anyone who's healthier, who keep our distance, are the people who go to the gym and clean our equipment, so I think it was the right decision," Kiesewetter said.Governor Ducey said Monday that local authorities will have the ability to enforce the new rules, with a focus on educating the public. This story originally appeared on abc15.com. 1859

The FDA's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee panel has endorsed a second COVID-19 vaccine in the United States. Now the FDA is expected to act quickly to authorize the Moderna vaccine for emergency use and keep it on schedule to be distributed to patients across the country as early next week. The panel voted 20 yeses and one abstain.WATCH RECAP:With the panel recommending EUA, the FDA as a whole would then need to file its own EUA approval. The final step would be a formal recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that Americans should receive the vaccine.Last Thursday, the committee voted in favor of granting EUA to Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine. By Monday, it was being administered across the country. The panel's meeting comes days after a key FDA report upheld the safety and efficacy results of the Moderna vaccine's Phase III trials. Those statistics showed that the vaccine was 95% effective with no severe side-effects."FDA has determined that the Sponsor has provided adequate information to ensure the vaccine's quality and consistency for authorization of the product under an EUA," the report said.An approval of Moderna's vaccine would immediately boost the supply levels of COVID-19 vaccines in the U.S. Millions of doses are ready to be shipped across the country as soon as approval is granted. The arrival of COVID-19 vaccines comes amid the bleakest stretch to date in the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. is currently seeing the highest level of new cases (213.000) and deaths (2,500) each day, according to seven-day rolling averages totaled by the COVID Tracking Project. More Americans than ever are also battling the virus in a hospital (113,000). 1725

The go-to comfort food for Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be chocolate. Sales of chocolate have been on the rise since mid-March.During the second quarter of 2020, roughly March through June, people bought .7B worth of chocolate. That’s a 6.3 percent increase from the same time period last year, according to Nielsen.Mars Wrigley, which owns brands like M&M’s and Snickers, told CNN online sales have been stronger in recent months.Research firm NPD recently said Americans were increasing their snacking while stay-at-home orders were in place.During the first few weeks of April, between meal snacking was up 4 percent, according to NPD’s research. They also found 37 percent of consumers were stocking up on salty snacks and frozen treats. 776
