CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police have identified the suspects who reportedly attacked a Carlsbad woman, stabbing her to death during an attempted burglary Monday morning. According to police, Ian Bushee, 37, and Malissa James, 26, who are both transients, were arrested on the 4800 block of Park Drive Monday. Both are on probation in San Bernardino for residential burglary. Police say Bushee was arrested for homicide, burglary, conspiracy, auto theft and accessory after the fact. James was arrested for homicide, burglary, conspiracy and auto theft. “The Police Department shares the communities’ concern over such a tragic incident,” Police Chief Neil Gallucci said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family.”The incident was reported at around 12:30 a.m. at a home in the 1800 block of Outrigger Lane, just north of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, according to Carlsbad police.MUST-READ: Victims in deadly paragliding accident at Torrey Pines Gliderport identifiedPolice said the suspects broke into the home, and during the break-in, a woman in the house was stabbed. Charlottesville, Virginia, is again bracing for journalists and protesters to converge on the city as jury selection begins Monday for the man accused of killing Heather Heyer at last year's Unite the Right rally.James Fields of Maumee, Ohio, is accused of plowing his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of counterprotesters during the August 2017 white nationalist gathering, killing Heyer and injuring several other people, police say.Heyer, 32, was a local paralegal and had attended the rally to speak out against white supremacy and racism. Her friends and families say she died for her beliefs.Fields stands charged with first-degree murder in Heyer's death. He also faces five counts of malicious wounding, three counts of aggravated malicious wounding and one count of failing to stop at an accident involving a death.Separately, he is charged with hate crimes in a 30-count federal indictment. CARLSBAD (CNS) - The Army and Navy Academy agreed to pay .75 million to settle a lawsuit filed by a former cadet at the Carlsbad-based military school, where the cadet was allegedly sexually assaulted in 1999, the law firm representing the cadet announced today.The civil suit, filed by Irvine-based law firm Manly, Stewart & Finaldi, alleged that 60-year-old Jeffrey Barton, who was an administrator in charge of academics at the academy, molested the cadet when he was a ninth-grader in 1999, the law firm said in a statement.The lawsuit alleged that Barton drugged the cadet in May 1999 and sodomized him in a bathroom on campus.In a criminal case involving the cadet, Barton was convicted in June 2017 of five felony counts of oral copulation and one felony county of sodomy.He was sentenced to 48 years in prison in August 2017.Manly, Stewart & Finaldi also represented a former cadet of the Carlsbad-based academy in a separate civil suit in 2017.
