ACADIANA, La. — With President-elect Joe Biden's projected win, his running mate Kamala Harris will make history as the nation's first female Vice President. For some, it's an inspiration.The win is especially meaningful to the members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. It's the oldest African-American sorority in the country, of which Harris is a member."How meaningful it is, that in a space that was once built by slaves, is now having someone there that represents everything that the African- American community means in America," said Joya Hayes, the South-Central Regional director of Alpha Kappa Alpha. "We're just excited that one of our own is at a level where she is not only at a space that she's competent and prepared to lead, but she represents what values we have at historically Black Greek organization."The organization is one of nine historically Black Greek letter organizations. Those organizations were founded at a time when other Greek-letter organizations denied Black students entry.Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded in 1908, and membership continues beyond college — its members are a part of the sorority for life, focusing on service and empowering their communities.Hayes says Harris represents hope, validation and the shattering of the "glass ceiling.""Over the last four years there have just been times in which the communities of color in America have continued to question our worth and our value and how much we're appreciated in today's society," Hayes said. "This vote is validation that America still has the values in which we wanted to have and that there is space in all levels of government for communities of color that are ready to serve. That diversity is something we're proud of."Clancy Ratliff, a professor at the University of Louisiana, says it's a historic moment for all women."This executive branch looks more like America than it ever has before," Ratliff said. "We'll see in future elections more women in primaries in both parties. ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) — Sheriff's deputies are investigating reports of a suspicious vehicle near an East County school.Students walking to and from Joan McQueen Middle School Wednesday said they saw a vehicle slow down next to them as they were heading to school. This was near Victoria Drive and Sneath Way, according to the Alpine Union School District. The students became concerned and reported the incident, according to San Diego Sheriff's investigators.The driver or passenger didn't talk to or touch the students. The school district added that there were two instances in which the reported vehicle slowed near students as they walked.The school district sent a message out to parents saying, "we have asked all campuses to be vigilant about safety. I hope you will partner with us in our efforts to keep our children safe by appropriately talking about this incident at home and discussing how to practice proactive safety skills." 950

Albertsons wants to scoop up Rite Aid.The deal announced Tuesday will create a new company with about billion in annual sales and 4,900 stores across the country.Albertsons pharmacies will be rebranded as Rite Aid and some Rite Aids will continue to operate as stand-alone stores. Rite Aid CEO John Standley will become CEO of the new combined company.Walgreens wanted to buy up all of Rite Aid in 2015, but federal regulators nixed that agreement on antitrust grounds. In September, the two companies announced a scaled back version for nearly 2,000 of Rite Aid's stores. That left Rite Aid with around 2,600 stores.The move will allow Albertsons to become "a fully integrated one-stop-shop," Miller said in a statement.Rite Aid jumped 24% in pre-market trading.Albertsons is a privately held company and Rite Aid is public. A woman is suing Waffle House after saying she was served bleach in a drink she got from a restaurant in Georgia.Atavian Moore sued the restaurant chain Oct. 27, claiming the incident has cost her ,000 in medical bills so far, according to Atlanta's WSB-TV.Moore claims that when she was eating at a Waffle House in Lithonia, Georgia in October 2015, she was given a drink that had bleach in it. She assumes the bleach got in her drink after the restaurant cleaned its drink dispenser.WSB reported that Moore's lawsuit claimed she suffered injuries to her esophagus, stomach and other internal body parts because of the potentially deadly cocktail.According to the National Capital Poison Center, swallowing small amounts of bleach can cause mouth irritation and vomiting but when someone swallows a large amount of the chemical it can cause more serious problems.Clint Davis is a reporter for the Scripps National Desk.
