LOS ANGELES, April 7 (Xinhua) -- A new research has found that about nine million people in the United States identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).About 1.8 percent of adults identify themselves as bisexual, 1. 7 percent as gay or lesbian, and 0.03 percent as transgender, researchers at the University of California-Los Angeles' School of Law said in the study published by The Los Angeles Times on Thursday. The study culled data and methods from nine surveys conducted over the last seven years and averaged results from five of those surveys to estimate sexual orientation and from two surveys to estimate the transgender population. The findings also show that about 8.2 percent of Americans said they participated in same-sex sexual activity and about 11 percent said they had some same-sex sexual attraction, but neither of these groups necessarily identified themselves as LGBT.The researchers noted that insufficient and inconsistent national surveys make it difficult to get an estimate of the LGBT population in the United States, according to the Times report.

BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's railways transported about 77.34 million passengers during the fifteen days (Jan. 19 to Feb. 2) before the Spring Festival, the Ministry of Railways said. The figure was about 9.5 percent higher than the same period last year and set a new record, according to a report posted on the ministry's website. There were an average of 5.16 million passengers per day, up 448,000 from the same period last year. On Jan. 29, passengers topped 5.78 million, setting a new record for daily transportation before the Spring Festival, the report said.In the fifteen days before the festival, about 4.80 million passengers left Beijing, 8.39 million left Guangzhou and 5.69 million left Shanghai, while year-on-year growth and those leaving Guangzhou rose the most, up 15 percent year on year, said the report. The ministry said challenges still exist as more snow and rain will hit southern China after the Spring Festival, when passengers are returning.China's busy Spring Festival transportation season runs for 40 days and is calculated in two phases: 15 days before the Spring Festival and 25 days after the Spring Festival, the report explained.

LOS ANGELES, May 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. researchers have found MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in meats sold at U.S. supermarkets, according to a study published on Wednesday. This is "community-acquired MRSA" that is transmitted by humans carrying the bacteria, researchers at Wayne State University in Detroit reported in the study appearing in the May 11 online edition of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's ( CDC's) journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. For the study, the researchers purchased 289 raw meat samples, including 156 beef, 76 chicken and 57 turkey samples, from 30 grocery stores in Detroit from August 2009 through January 2010.The researchers found that 22.5 percent of the samples were contaminated with S. aureus and six samples tested positive for MRSA.Of the six samples contaminated with MRSA, two were beef, three were chicken and one was turkey, the researchers said. The extent of MRSA contamination in meat varies by the type of meat and where the meat was processed, said lead researcher Yifan Zhang, an assistant professor in the department of nutrition and food science at the university. The germ is apparently being introduced by humans handling the meat, she said.According to another recent study, the strain of MRSA in meat in the United States is not the strain found in animals, Zhang noted."MRSA has always been found in human patients, but we found this in retail meat, so retail meat can be a reservoir of these bugs," said Zhang."When people handle food, they can get the bugs from the meat if the meat is already contaminated," she explained. The risk of becoming infected is especially high if you have open cuts or sores on your hands or skin, Zhang added.MRSA is common in hospitals and nursing homes, where it can cause serious illness and even death. But recently "community-acquired MRSA" has become a problem among some high school and college athletes who share equipment. This type of MRSA appears as a skin infection and is usually less serious, according to CDC.MRSA is killed when the meat is cooked thoroughly, experts say.Other precaution measures include:-- Wear gloves when handling meat, especially when there are wounds on the hands;-- Washing plates or utensils used to prepare food before using them again to eat; and-- Disinfect counters that have come into contact with meats.

SEOUL, April 12 (Xinhua) -- South Korea has downgraded its alert level for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) one notch as the disease has practically come to an end, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said Tuesday. The ministry said that it lowered the alert level from "orange" to "yellow," the second-lowest status in the four-tiered alert system, as no additional burial of livestock has occurred in three weeks after the last case in Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province, on March 21.The country dropped the alert level from the highest level of " red" to "orange" on March 24.The highly contagious animal disease, first confirmed on Nov. 29, has forced the country to cull more than 3.47 million livestock, mostly pigs and cattle, resulting in losses of 3 trillion won (2.6 billion U.S. dollars). The ministry, meanwhile, said that 670 animal quarantine experts will continue to decontaminate livestock farms once every week and keep close watch to see if any animals become sick.

GENEVA, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Roughly half to three quarters of adults aged between 18 to 65 years have had headache in the last year, a prevalent problem that went under-treated, the Geneva based World Health Organization (WHO) said in a report issued Tuesday. The report, named "Of Headache Disorders and Resources in the World 2011," regarded headache disorders as one of the most prevalent disorders of mankind.WHO estimated over 10 percent of the adult population suffered from migraine, and 1.7 to 4 percent of them were troubled frequently by headache on 15 or more days every month.Among all cases studied, the report said, on average only 10 percent were treated by neurologists, and the rates were even lower in Africa and South-East Asia.Three types of headache disorders were underlined as the most frequently seen, including migraine, tension-type headache and that caused by medication-overuse.The report concluded that given the very high indirect costs of headache, investment in health care related to headache treatment might be overall cost-saving to society.
