SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City Council leaders voted 5-3 to oppose President Donald Trump's executive order to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The resolution, introduced by Concilmember Georgette Gomez, joins several other cities and states who have also stated their opposition."The border wall is a huge mistake for our region economically and environmentally. I am happy the City Council voted to pass my resolution. Our tax dollars should be spent uplifting the quality of life for all San Diegans, and tackling our issues on road infrastructure, housing, and homelessness," Gomez said following the vote. "Building a wall will do nothing for our families and communities but place a hateful divide between two of the largest cities in Mexico and the United States."RELATED: Councilmember says border wall would hurt San Diego economy, environmentThe resolution allows the San Diego City Attorney, Independent Budget Analyst, and staff to put together a disclosure program for city contractors.Councilmember David Alvarez called the border wall "a stupid idea" and a waste of money in a series of Twitter posts following the vote. 1165

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego doctors sound the alarm on potential dangers of motorized scooters, some victims are now turning to personal injury lawyers.A woman walking downtown was recently hit by a scooter and left with ,000 in medical bills.Unfortunately, a personal injury attorney tells 10News in cases like this, victims will likely be on their own.RELATED: Mother, daughter seriously injured in scooter crash"The scooter operator is responsible for your injuries. Now, does that mean you’re going to be compensated for them? Probably not," said Mike Bomberger with Estey & Bomberger. "Most scooter operators don't have insurance to cover them for the operation of the scooter."While scooter riders must have a driver's license, they are not required to have insurance. Bomberger says it's also unlikely the scooter companies would be held liable in accidents.RELATED: Electric scooter rider injured in crash, cited for DUI“The waivers and disclaimers you sign are very, very detailed in favor of the company, almost under no circumstance can you go after company unless there’s a malfunction of the scooter itself," said Bomberger. While attorneys are advertising they can help scooter victims, Bomberger believes compensation will be few and far between.“We’ve gotten 10-12 calls and have only taken one case; they were hit by a car," said Bomberger.RELATED: Police crack down on scooter riders without helmetsDowntown resident Jonathan Freeman has been a staunch opponent of scooters coming to San Diego. His dog was hit and he's had close calls himself.“I have elderly neighbors; they tell me they don’t want to walk. If they’re hit by a scooter and break their hip, it’s a death sentence," said Freeman. He's called on the city to do more to hold people accountable for riding illegally on sidewalks and the promenade downtown.RELATED: Local emergency rooms report 'daily visits' for scooter injuriesDr. Jeff Sugar, an urgent care doctor with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, says they've seen a range of injuries from head lacerations and sprains to contusions and fractures. He says urgent care departments report daily visits by patients injured using electric scooters and rental bikes.Michael Sise, M.D., trauma surgeon and chief of staff of Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, said this: 2319

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Council leaders on Tuesday approved the purchase and sale agreement that formalizes the sale of the Mission Valley stadium site to San Diego State University.Following the council's approval of the PSA, a required 30-day waiting period begins. After that, Mayor Kevin Faulconer will sign the agreement to complete the sale and begin the escrow period of the land.Transfer of ownership of the stadium site is expected to take place in early August. Construction on the university's Aztec Stadium is expected to begin shortly after, with the stadium and river park first on SDSU's list for development.RELATED: City Council approves draft of Mission Valley stadium site sale to SDSUFollowing the vote, Faulconer and SDSU President Adela de la Torre issued a joint statement on the agreement:"Today’s final and historic City Council approval of the sale of the Mission Valley stadium site to San Diego State University ushers in a new era for both the City of San Diego and its oldest university. It brings an end to any questions about the future of the stadium site and begins the revitalization of public land to better serve our regional community.SDSU Mission Valley will create an academic and research hub helping generations of San Diegans achieve their personal, educational, and professional goals. It will create thousands of jobs and strengthen our regional economy. It will also support many of the City’s goals by creating more housing, including affordable housing; enhancing mobility options with a new bike and pedestrian paths; increasing transit use; and improving the quality of life for all San Diegans through the creation of a world-class river park.We are grateful for the work that has been done over the past 19 months to get us to this point, and look forward to further strengthening the partnership between the City of San Diego and SDSU as this project becomes a reality."Aztec Stadium is expected to cost about 0 million and will be funded through philanthropic gifts and bonds to be paid back through revenue generated by the facility. The facility's revenue will also support its operating costs. The project is part of San Diego State's "SDSU Mission Valley" campus plan, which includes school facilities; housing for students, the community, and affordable housing; retail; and a community river park. 2367

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children's minds cam become overwhelmed during the chaos of a pandemic. However, one local company has found a way to deal with these challenges, especially as kids get ready to start a new school year. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a holistic program that specializes in getting to the root of children's challenges."Those challenges might be academically, socially, or behavioral, says office director Amanda Lee. "We see a lot of parents who come in with children struggling with attention, and sensory processing."And at Brain Balance, they stay away from medications. "That just looks at the tip of the iceberg, and is a band-aid."They believe in the power of exercise, with workouts such as jump rope, balance beam, and planks just to give a few examples."It's fantastic for the brain, but the type of exercise we do here is very intentional. It works on very specific areas of the brain, but especially the connections between the different regions which are connected with development, processing, learning, and every day functioning."Many families are now seeing their kids struggle, as they deal with the pandemic and distance learning. "It's just been difficult," says the father of twin girls going through the Brain Balance program. "It's been nice because Brain Balance has been there, with emails as well as checking in with phone calls. But now having schools start with the distance learning, it's going to be hard to gauge them, but I can see they've gained."So what are the red flags to look for in your children? Lee says there are a few. "Are they able to really focus on the lesson at hand, and what about reading? A lot of kids are really struggling with getting through a paragraph or a sentence."Lee also says Brain Balance is by no means a cure, just a stepping stone to help children with their struggles."We know there are these road blocks in the brain. So we help them clear those road blocks, and to help them truly thrive, especially in the new school year." 2024
