JERUSALEM, July 25 (Xinhua) -- A new study carried out by a Tel Aviv University researcher indicates that the common backache may not only be caused by bad positions or aging, but also by your genes.Prof. Gregory Livshits of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine says that genes play a major role in back pain, especially in the lower back, and in spinal deterioration.In a decade-long project with 2,500 identical and non-identical twins, Livshits found that, in one Arab family, the same back problems appeared in all the members of the family, whether young or old.According to the study, non-identical twins were three times more likely to have back pain, while identical twins were six times more likely to have the same back problems.Livshits believes the discovery of the link between back pains and genes could lead to much better treatment.The research was developed in collaboration with a team of scientists at Kings College, London, led by Prof. Tim Spector and Dr. Fran Williams and was recently published in the journal " Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases."In order to better investigate the genetic causes for one of the world most common pains, Livshits and his colleagues hope to put together an international consortium of research groups.

GENEVA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) started an emergency vaccination campaign in all accessible areas of South and Central Somalia, WTO spokesperson Tarek Jasarevic said here on Friday.In July 2011 alone, 1,019 suspected measles cases and 31 related deaths were reported in South and Central Somalia, representing 20 percent of all reported cases for this year.The major factors for a measles outbreak in Somalia are low coverage, malnutrition, population movements, and overcrowed internally displaced (IDP) camps."WHO fears that the measles outbreak could affect a high number of people, especially among the vulnerable IDPs whose overall health is already fragile," Jasarevic said.About 2.5 million children aged between 6 and 15 in 10 regions of South and Central Somalia, including children in Mogadishu, will be targeted during this campaign.

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese ambassador to Pakistan declared on Sunday that the Chinese government will provide an emergency humanitarian aid worth 30 million RMB (4.7 million U.S. dollars) to Pakistan to help its relief efforts.In light of the immense damages caused by the floods in some parts of Pakistan, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Liu Jian called on Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar on Sunday to express sympathy and solidarity of the Chinese people toward Pakistani people and declared that the Chinese government will provide the emergency humanitarian aid.Diplomats and staff of the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad have recently voluntarily donated 600,000 rupee (about 6860 U.S. dollars) to the people who hit by the floods. COPENHAGEN, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The outbreak of infections caused by E. coli bacteria may be over in Denmark as no new cases have been reported here since Friday.According to Denmark's National Serum Institute (NSI), there are 18 confirmed cases of severe intestinal infection caused by exposure to the bacteria as of Monday. No new infections have been reported since Friday, it added.The confirmed cases are said to consist of 10 men and 8 women aged between 23 and 81 years of age. Seven show symptoms of kidney failure which is associated with advanced stages of the infection.All but one are believed to have contracted the infection while traveling in northern Germany, where the outbreak started, the NSI said.So far, the E. coli infection has claimed 21 lives in Germany, which reports over 2,100 confirmed and suspected cases. It has also spread to 12 countries according to the World Health Organization (WHO)."This particular strain of E.coli has been identified in some people sporadically in the past, but it has not been known to have been associated with outbreaks in the past," a WHO spokesperson said Friday, adding it was a "very, very rare strain."Health authorities in Germany now suspect bean sprouts as the source of contamination in this outbreak, although this is yet to be confirmed.Dr Kaare Moelbak, an epidemiologist at NSI told Danish media Sunday that bean sprouts were a "very likely" source of contamination.Cucumbers were initially suspected and Denmark's food authority continues to warn against eating raw tomato, cucumber or lettuce from Germany until the source is established.Children are normally most vulnerable to E. coli infection but most of those infected in this outbreak are above the age of 20 years, Moelbak told Xinhua last week.He said children are likely less affected by this outbreak as they usually eat fewer salads than adults.In Germany, it is mostly women who have been affected by the infection. Moelbak explained the skew in infections saying women tend to choose to eat more vegetables than men, in comments made to Danish media Thursday.

XIAMEN, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland on Sunday announced a raft of measures on tourism, transportation, farmers and food safety to boost Taiwan's economic growth and cross-Strait relations.A pilot plan allowing mainlanders to visit Taiwan as individual tourists will start on June 28, which covers residents of Beijing, Shanghai and southeastern city of Xiamen at the first stage, said Wang Yi, head of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office.Wang told a conference at the weeklong Straits Forum being held in Xiamen of Fujian Province that the mainland and Taiwan also agreed to allow Fujian residents to visit the islands of Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu in the Taiwan Strait as individual tourists.Observers predict that the influx of mainland tourists will bring vitality to Taiwan's export-oriented economy which had greatly suffered from the global economic downturn.Currently, mainlanders are only allowed to visit Taiwan on package tours after the authorities lifted a partial ban in July 2008.At Sunday's conference, the two sides also announced to increase the number of cross-Strait passenger flights by more than 50 percent to 558 flights per week, and add terminals for the direct flights in four mainland cities, including one in northwestern city of Lanzhou, which brought the total number of cross-Strait flight terminals to 50 on both sides of the Strait.The moves aim to cope with the increasing number of mainlanders who wish to visit Taiwan.The number of mainland tourists traveling to the island reached 2.34 million as of the end of May, China's top tourism official said at the conference. There are also an increasing number of mainland business travelers and government delegations visiting Taiwan.Meanwhile, both sides agreed to "regulate airfares" for flights from Beijing and Shanghai to Taipei.Currently, the cheapest one-way ticket between Beijing and Taipei on Air China, the mainland's flagship carrier, costs around 1,300 yuan (about 200 U.S. dollars) while a full price one-way ticket costs more than 3,000 yuan, according to the airline's website.Some members of the public on both sides have complained about the high price.For the past decades, travelers had to transfer at other airports, particularly the one in Hong Kong, in order to reach Taiwan by air.In 2003, the two sides agreed to operate charter flights during Spring Festival, China's biggest public holiday.Regular direct flights across the Strait have been available since July 2008 to mainly serve mainland package tourists visiting Taiwan.The mainland also decided to facilitate entry and exit procedures for Taiwan residents and lower charges for endorsing their passports by 50 percent starting from July 1.Meanwhile, four "enterprising parks" will be set up in four cities of Fujian, central Henan and southwestern Guangxi provinces for Taiwan farmers launching agricultural startups on the mainland, said Wang Yi.Both sides also agreed to encourage mainland enterprises to purchase farm produce and other products listed in the early harvest program of the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) directly in Taiwan.A general manager surnamed Lin of a farm produce company in Taiwan's southern city of Tainan said he hoped to seize the opportunity to benefit from the development of the island's farm and fishing sector as the mainland has become Taiwan's largest export market.Further, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation and exchanges concerning nuclear power security and food safety.The third Straits Forum, which opened Saturday in Xiamen, facing Taiwan across the Strait, will close in the island's city of Taichung on Friday.
