SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An international team of scientists, led by biologists at the University of California San Diego, has synthetically engineered mosquitoes that halt the transmission of the dengue virus, the university announced Thursday.Scientists at UC San Diego Associate Professor Omar Akbari's lab worked with Vanderbilt University Medical Center to identify a human antibody for dengue suppression. The broad-spectrum antibody stops the transmission of all four known types of the fever, compared to previous experiments, which have been able to limit single strains.The team then designed the antibody "cargo" to be synthetically expressed in the dengue-spreading Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.RELATED: UC San Diego study finds solutions for loneliness"Once the female mosquito takes in blood, the antibody is activated and expressed -- that's the trigger," Akbari said. "The antibody is able to hinder the replication of the virus and prevent its dissemination throughout the mosquito, which then prevents its transmission to humans. It's a powerful approach."Akbari works in the Division of Biological Sciences and is a member of the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society.These lab-engineers mosquitoes could be paired with a dissemination system, making it capable of spreading the antibody throughout wild disease- transmitting mosquitoes, Akbari said.Dengue fever is a virus that poses a severe risk to children and older adults in tropical regions in Asia and Latin America. Infecting those with compromised immune systems, dengue victims suffer flu-like symptoms, including severe fevers and rashes. Serious cases can include life-threatening bleeding. No specific treatment exists and thus, prevention and control depend on measures that stop the spread of the virus.This development could go a long way toward limiting the disease's transmission."It is fascinating that we now can transfer genes from the human immune system to confer immunity to mosquitoes," said coauthor of the paper, Dr. James Crowe, Jr., director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 28,000 defaulted bills were sent out to San Diego County taxpayers this week, but the county's treasurer announced Tuesday that his office is offering penalty relief."We know many of the late bills are due to COVID-19, and we want our taxpayers to know there could be relief," Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister said. "They may qualify to have their penalties waived if they file for a COVID-19 cancellation request. Our customers must provide documentation as evidence to show how the pandemic impacted their ability to pay their second installment by April 10."The 28,623 defaulted bills McAllister's office sent out went to property taxpayers who failed to pay all their 2019-20 property taxes."We're sending 6,195 more defaulted bills than we sent last year," he said. "We expected to see an increase in tax defaults due to COVID-19's impact on the San Diego economy and workforce."The defaulted bills total over 7 million; last year, million in defaulted taxes was due.The deadline to pay the 2019-20 annual tax bill was June 30. Beginning July 1, late bills will incur a 1.5% penalty each month -- 18% each year -- until they are paid. That is on top of the 10% penalty added for each late installment.Taxpayers who have submitted a COVID-19 penalty cancellation request and have not heard back from the Treasurer-Tax Collector yet will receive a response in the mail. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Murder and other felony charges were filed Wednesday against a 20-year-old probationer who allegedly fired a gunshot toward his brother, missing him but inadvertently killing a next-door neighbor asleep in his bed.Manuula Save is accused in the Saturday morning death of Michael Walker, 38, who was shot about 1:45 a.m. by a bullet that traveled through a bedroom wall in the defendant's apartment and into the victim's unit in the 13400 block of Midland Road. Walker was hit once in the abdomen and died at a hospital about an hour later.Save faces life imprisonment if convicted of murder, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm.RELATED: Man killed by stray bullet in Poway apartment complex, suspect arrestedDeputy District Attorney Kristie Nikoletich said the shooting stemmed from a verbal argument and physical fight between Save and his older brother. "The defendant retrieved a firearm and fired in the direction of his brother to scare him and show his brother that he wasn't scared of him," Nikoletich said. But that bullet ended up going through a wall and striking a sleeping neighbor, Michael Walker. His grieving widow, Christina was inside the courtroom Wednesday, crying throughout the proceedings. 10News spoke to her earlier this week. "I'm just seeing this hole in his stomach, and then I look over, and there's a hole in my wall," Christina Walker said on the phone. She said he was sleeping in the guest room that night, so his snoring would not wake her up — A move that would place him right in the path of that stray bullet, and kill him hours later. Save then allegedly hid the 9mm firearm, which he was not allowed to possess due to a previous hit-and-run conviction involving the death of an elderly woman, Nikoletich said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman driving on a suspended license who had more than three times the legal blood-alcohol limit when she crashed her SUV head-on into another vehicle while driving her three young daughters through Rancho Bernardo was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in state prison. Mayra Alejandra Gonzalez, 30, -- on probation for a prior DUI -- had a .29% blood-alcohol content when she drove on the wrong side of Camino del Norte Nov. 12, 2018. Her SUV crashed head-on into an oncoming 2011 Jeep Liberty, causing severe injuries -- including a skull fracture and a brain bleed -- to her 9- month-old daughter, who was riding unrestrained. The defendant's 2-year-old daughter suffered facial injuries and her 8-year-old daughter broke a bone. The 57-year-old driver of the other car suffered broken bones and underwent five surgeries to treat his injuries. She crashed into a signpost and a parked car, and backed into a wall prior to the crash that led to her conviction, the prosecutor said. ``She put alcohol and what she wanted to do above the safety of her children and the safety of the community,'' McCarthy told the court. Considering the condition of her then-9-month-old, who still uses a feeding tube to this day as a result of the crash, McCarthy said ``It's a miracle (Gonzalez) is not here on a murder charge.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A towering palm tree and the tree trimmer strapped to it came toppling down inside the lobby area at a University City-area hotel Thursday. The tree was being cut down at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego-La Jolla, 4550 La Jolla Village Drive, when it struck a person shortly before 11 a.m., according to police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. San Diego Police told 10News the injured man was a tree trimmer. Medics took the victim, to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Joe Jaha, a supervisor at Arbor West Tree Surgeons, says a 3-man crew was at the hotel to take down three large palms in the lobby. He says the tree trimmer was 30 feet up the final, 40-foot palm. He had taken off the top and was trying to bring it down when the tree uprooted, with the tree and tree trimmer crashing to the ground. The tree trimmer, a man in his 30s, suffered a broken leg and arm."It had highly unusual, shallow roots, which we couldn't detect until it was too late.
