DENVER — A former teacher at East High School in Denver was arrested after accusations she smoked marijuana with her students during a party at her Denver home. Rachel Farley, 29, was taken into custody Monday on suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a class 4 felony. According to an arrest affidavit, Farley invited students from her class to her home on August 18, 2017, to decorate clothing for Freshman Day. At some point during the event, she brought out marijuana and began smoking it with her students, the document reads.In February of this year, police say they were dispatched to the school after a student reported that Farley had been providing and consuming marijuana with her students at her home.Police interviewed nine students as part of the investigation and “multiple students admitted to smoking with the suspect,” the document read. Farley resigned from East High School on August 31, 2017, according to a statement from Denver Public Schools. The statement stresses, “there was nothing notable about her resignation - she simply resigned.”After her resignation, DPS says she had been working as a volunteer in the music and drama department at the school. But after the allegations surfaced in February, she was “barred from volunteering for, contracting with or being employed by Denver Public Schools in the future.”Farley was listed as still being in custody at Denver City Jail as of Wednesday morning.  1502

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A 95-year-old grandmother in Florida was arrested Saturday after police said she slapped her granddaughter in the face with her slipper before calling 911 to get her out of the house.According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Hattie Reynolds told police her granddaughter, Janeen Williams, 46, would not get out of bed, and that she was "tired of her staying in bed all day soaking up the air conditioning."When officers arrived at the home, Williams told police she did not want to press charges, but because of "strict domestic violence laws" Reynolds was arrested.According to a Florida statute, police officers have the ability to determine if an arrest is needed in a domestic violence instance once probable cause is established."If your wife reported that you threatened to hit her, you would be arrested because that is a domestic violence assault," police Chief Craig Capri told the News-Journal. "I just feel bad for her but the officers did their job as required by the law."Reynolds was booked in the Volusia County Jail and released the next day on her own recognizance.  1126

DENVER — "Game of Thrones" fans who wanted to own something like the near-mythical "Dire Wolves" on the series are now abandoning Huskies in record numbers."People have actually asked me if we have any Dire Wolves. That doesn't exist." said Maren Gibson with the Arctic Breeds Rescue, which rescues Huskies, Malamutes and other northern breeds in Utah and Colorado. "They have no real knowledge of the breed."Now, many of those dogs are being found on the street or abandoned in shelters."We've said amongst ourselves, 'What is going on with all these lost Huskies?'" said Stephanie Weber, who helps run the Facebook group Lost and Found Dogs of Colorado. Weber said they have recently seen a surge in found Huskies that no one is looking for."So, it seems sort of like maybe they are not just getting loose," said Weber. "Maybe someone is turning them loose, getting rid of them." At the Dumb Friends League Shelter in Aurora, there has also been a significant increase in the number of Huskies and Malamutes. The shelter has seen a 25 percent increase in the last fiscal year, compared to only a 2.5 percent increase the year before.Some are strays, but almost half of them have been surrendered by their owners."The reasons people are giving when they are surrendering the dogs are time and space, which means they don't have enough time for the dog, they don't have enough space for the dog," said Maia Brusseau, a spokeswoman with the Dumb Friends League. "If you want to adopt this type of dog, you need to make sure it's right for your lifestyle."The high-energy breed can be a challenge for many owners."Northern breeds are difficult," said Weber, who is fostering a Husky mix. "They're stubborn. They're runners. They're escape artists, They're chewers. They're very vocal. They have high energy and need a lot of exercise. They're great dogs if you're willing to make your life fit around them."Weber said too many people choose pets as an extension of the favorite show or movie and not based on what is the best fit for their family."When '101 Dalmatians' came out, everyone wanted a Dalmatian. It happens with every trend like that. but 15 years is a long time to live with not the right dog," said Weber.She recommends volunteering at a wolf rescue if you want to see something like a Dire Wolf or fostering the breed before you decide to adopt. 2427

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — The re-extension of a facial covering directive in Palm Beach County, Florida is being called "medical tyranny" by some opponents who took to the streets Saturday afternoon in Delray Beach to display their frustrations.Chris Nelson, the lead organizer of the "Reopen South Florida" rally, points to statistics that show the county's mortality rate has fallen."What we're seeing right now is a dangerous precedent," Nelson said. "If they can tell me that I cannot buy or sell anything without a mask on, they can tell me that I can't buy or sell without proof of a vaccine, that I took a vaccine, and it could go on and on."During Tuesday's presentation to county commissioners, Dr. Alina Alonso, head of the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County, told commissioners there are encouraging signs when it comes to the county's COVID-19 positivity rate, which has decreased over the past two weeks. Additionally, there have been no coronavirus-related deaths since Oct. 7.However, she cautioned that 50% of new cases in the county are people ages 35 to 64. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - For the past five days, five shark sightings have been reported off North San Diego County beaches, Del Mar lifeguards tell 10News. A juvenile shark, about 5 feet long, was spotted Friday afternoon. It did not show signs of aggressive behavior, lifeguards said. The water was not cleared of swimmers and surfers. Del Mar’s shark sightings started Monday and have continued every day this week. Sighting locations include 15th and 29th streets, City of Del Mar officials reported. Drew Pierce, who went to Del Mar to avoid triple-digit heat in Temecula, was in the water Wednesday when he saw several 3-4 foot long sharks. They tend to eat smaller fish and pose no threat to people, Dewar said. Dewar recommends avoiding beaches at dusk and dawn, avoiding river mouths, and monitoring shark warning signs. Farther up the coast, two local surfers spotted multiple sharks near El Portal Beach in San Clemente Friday afternoon, City News Service reported.
