SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California has temporarily banned overnight camping in some parts of its park after several interactions between campers and foraging bears. The decision was made to close down back-country camping in the Twin, Rainbow, Swan and Snag Lake areas after multiple visitors reported that bears had come to their campsites and searched their backpacks for food. The Sacramento Bee reported that the areas will remain open for hiking, but the park warns visitors to be careful. The National Park Service website said the policy will not only protect campers but “protect the bears by promoting the offending bear(s) to return to normal foraging behavior.” 724

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Companies affiliated with Gov. Gavin Newsom received nearly million in loans designed to help small businesses survive the pandemic. Newly released information from the federal government reveals more than eight times the amount of loans originally reported. The governor put his business holdings into a blind trust before he took office and so would not have participated in the decision. But the disclosure comes as he already is battling criticism that he is elitist despite his protests that he is a proud small businessman and entrepreneur. Nine businesses tied to Newsom’s PlumpJack Group split the nearly .9 million in loans. The watchdog group Project On Government Oversight says it was a surprisingly large loan. 762

REXBURG, Idaho — Judge Faren Eddins says there is probable or sufficient cause that Chad Daybell committed the crimes he is accused of. Daybell is currently charged with two felony counts of Destruction, Alteration or Concealment of Evidence, and two felony counts of Conspiracy Destruction, Alteration, or Concealment of Evidence. The decision was made after a 10-minute recess. Daybell was emotionless as Judge Eddins announced his decision.Prosecutors played a recording of a jailhouse phone call between Lori Vallow and Daybell. The recording was made on the day authorities were searching for the bodies of Tylee Ryan and Joshua "JJ" Vallow. Soon after, the FBI and other law enforcement testified they found the bodies of the children in shallow graves on Daybell's property. There was no indication that either Lori or Chad was aware of the discovery, and they said nothing on the phone call about what they knew.Daybell's case now heads to District Court, where he will go before Judge Steven Boyce on August 21 for an arraignment. The defense has 60 days to file for a change of venue. No one has been charged in the deaths of the children.Lori is scheduled for a preliminary hearing with Judge Eddins next week on August 10 and 11. The hearing will start at 9 a.m.This article was written by Katie Kloppenburg for KIVI. 1335

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will resume eviction and foreclosure proceedings on Sept. 1 unless the state Legislature agrees to extend the protections. The Judicial Council of California voted 19-1 to end the temporary rules that had been in place since April 6. State lawmakers are negotiating with Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom on a proposal that would halt most evictions for the duration of the pandemic. But they have yet to reach a deal despite having five months to negotiate. California Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye on Thursday urged the Legislature and the governor to move quickly to “resolve this looming crisis.” 647

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom says the state must do more to protect essential workers, many of whom are Latino, from the economic and health harms of the coronavirus. Newsom on Friday said he'll work with the Legislature to expand protections against evictions and expand workers compensation and paid sick leave. He enacted similar policies through executive order earlier this year but many expired or will soon. Latinos make up 39% of California’s population but 55% of confirmed positive coronavirus cases, according to state data. Newsom said the majority of farm workers, construction workers, cooks, food prep workers, truck drivers, cashiers and janitors are Latino. 708
