SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County will expand enforcement efforts to track down businesses knowingly operating in violation of the current public health order.After a bit of a lengthy back and forth, the board of supervisors voted unanimously to expand the current enforcement team.Currently, the county’s newly developed Safe Reopening Compliance Team focuses on egregious cases, outbreaks, and complaints.There are only ten staff members presently on the team, 13 more will be added on during phase one to continue looking into egregious cases and outbreak investigations.A Healthy Compliance Call Center also went live, where members of the public can report violations of the public health order by calling (858) 694- 2900.Tuesday’s vote to include a phase two will add 22 staff members at .8 million to follow up with businesses or entities that are still operating in violation of the public health order.The funding will come from the CARES Act.Two other enforcement options were on the table for supervisors consider, but they were voted down by the majority.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, has already sent several letters ordering businesses to close down until they comply with the order.A handful of gyms and churches in the county have stayed open inside despite being ordered to close or move their operations outdoors.This week the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office filed five misdemeanor charges against a Ramona gym owner for failing to comply. 1505

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are investigating what led to the death of a man while in police custody last week in Paradise Hills.Police said 39-year-old Guillermo Corrales was arrested on April 16 in the 6300 block of Clyde Ave. after reports of a relative becoming violent. Corrales had possibly used narcotics, according to police.Corrales was placed in handcuffs and medically evaluated by first responders.During the evaluation, Corrales went into cardiac arrest, according to police, and he was taken to a nearby hospital and placed on life support.He died from his injuries on Thursday.San Diego Police homicide detectives are investigating the incident as a possible custody death. 724

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Reverend Sandra Dority knows the dangers of heart disease, the top killer in San Diego County."My sister just passed from a heart attack in December, and my mom had congestive heart failure," she told 10News this week.That's why the 74-year old makes sure to eat right, exercise and, above all, know her numbers."My blood pressure is 116 over 74, and that was after a five mile walk on Saturday," she says.Dority tells everyone she can to know their numbers. It's a message she says is especially important in the black community, where the prevalence of heart attacks, stroke and high blood pressure are higher than normal."We have to change our lifestyle," she says. "There is a better way to live, because the numbers aren't changing unless we change."Dority was one of the first people to join LiveWell San Diego in their Love Your Heart campaign, which offers free blood pressure screenings at hundreds of locations across the county. She brought information to her church, Mount Moriah Christian Church in Mira Mesa.Now, she volunteers at blood pressure screening events, helps run educational sessions, and makes sure pastors talk about heart health from the pulpit every Sunday."God is love and he wants us to reach out and let others know there's a better way to live. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego police officials have announced the arrest of two suspects in the murder of a security guard who was gunned down outside of an East Village homeless shelter last month.In a release sent Tuesday night, San Diego Police Department Acting Capt. Martha Sainz said homicide investigators were led to two suspects in the case through witness accounts and collected video footage from the area including from Smart Streetlights.The high-quality images obtained from the Smart Streetlights allowed investigators to identify 47-year-old Floyd Garrett and 40-year-old Johnny Hill as the suspects, according to Sainz."On January 4, 2020, investigators tracked Garrett to Phoenix, Arizona where he was arrested with the assistance of the Phoenix Police Department. Garrett will remain in custody in Phoenix, pending extradition hearings," said Sainz.Hill was located in San Diego and arrested by San Diego Police officers Tuesday without incident. He was booked into county jail for the murder.Both men are from San Diego, according to Sainz.Ernest Lee Buchanan, 44, was killed on Dec. 28 outside the Alpha Project shelter on Imperial Avenue. Buchanan was returning from taking a meal break when someone approached him and opened fire. Buchanan was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries a short time later. 1344

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and other local health and community leaders urged San Diegans to put their focus on the fight against the coronavirus instead of the restrictions placed on businesses due to the pandemic.During a Monday morning press conference, Fletcher specifically called out fellow Supervisors Jim Desmond and Kristin Gaspar, who have been pushing for reopenings.“In particular Supervisors Jim Desmond and Kristen Gaspar are inciting a fight between government and small business. They’re exploiting the pain and suffering that small businesses are going through as a result of a global pandemic as a wedge for political gain. It is reckless and irresponsible leadership,” Fletcher said.Fletcher’s comments come as San Diego County inches towards the possibility of moving from the red tier into California’s most restrictive purple tier.In response to Fletcher’s remarks, Gaspar issued this statement:“This morning Supervisor Fletcher held a hellfire and brimstone press conference in which he ironically and incorrectly blamed me for playing politics with COVID. Let me set the record straight: I have never supported any approach to re-opening that was not specifically supported by our Public Health Officer and clinical leadership team. Supervisor Fletcher knows this but prefers to continue spreading this false narrative because he is actively running a campaign against me. I measured the distance between our office doors, and it is 7 feet, so he and I can actually have a socially distanced conversation anytime he isn’t holding a press conference.
