SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City officials say 55 people at the San Diego Convention Center's emergency homeless shelter have tested positive for COVID-19, as cases surge around the country.The individuals who tested positive include those suffering from homelessness and staff at the center, according to the City of San Diego.Those homeless individuals who tested positive will be moved to a local hotel managed by the county for public health use. Staff who tested positive have been notified and advised to stay home. Positive individuals will be kept off-site until it is deemed safe for them to return.The county has made testing available to all staff and residents at the center to halt any further spread and is working to determine if there is an impact to others at the Convention Center.Prior to this round of testing, there had been less than 30 positive tests at the Convention Center over the last nine months, the city says.The city says that individuals utilizing the Convention Center and staff have a daily temperature check and verbal questionnaire and must wear a face covering, and staff clean and sanitize surfaces and hands frequently.The new positive cases as COVID-19 cases surge across the county and state. April Simpkins is a healthy 29-year-old. Simpkins said she felt helpless watching as the pandemic spread around the world, until she heard about 1 Day Sooner while listening to a podcast. 1 Day Sooner is an organization that advocates for volunteers willing to participate in a human challenge trial. The trial means being infected with COVID-19 in hopes of speeding up the process for a vaccine. The trial is restricted to young and healthy people. So far, there is no plan for any human challenge trials to fight COVID-19, but over 30,000 thousand people, from over 140 countries, have signed up to volunteer. The hope is to have the list of volunteers ready, if and when such a trial is approved. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bagging vegetables, opening boxes, organizing volunteers.Every month the parking lot at Unity Church in City Heights becomes a mini grocery store."Without this service a lot of people wouldn't even have a plate on the table to be able to say I had my meal today," said Chanae Jackson.Jackson started this food distribution several years back, partnering with Feeding San Diego to make it possible.She also found others who wanted to give back, including her friend Dede Jackson."You have hungry babies at home these places help they help they help feed your family," Jackson explained.Both women know how appreciated the groceries are because in addition to volunteering, they also take home food.They tell ABC 10News there's always been people lining up, but since COVID-19 hit, those lines have grown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As San Diego sporting associations work to recruit new officials, they're up against abuse from parents and fans.The problem has gotten so bad that one youth soccer referee created a Facebook page to call out the bad behavior, parent shaming in hopes to address the problem nationwide.Kia Dehpanah has been officiating in San Diego for 25 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Days after pleading guilty to misusing campaign funds, Congressman Duncan Hunter has announced he will resign from Congress.Hunter, who represented the 50th District, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal charge of conspiracy to misuse campaign funds for personal use. Though after the plea, it wasn't clear if the embattled Congressman would resign.“Shortly after the Holidays I will resign from Congress. It has been an honor to serve the people of California’s 50th District, and I greatly appreciate the trust they have put in me over these last 11 years," Rep.
