SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nurses say they're approaching a breaking point amid the coronavirus pandemic.A San Diego registered nurse spoke to 10News, but asked we don't identify her out of fear she would lose her job, to explain what she and other healthcare workers on the front lines are experiencing.She said Thursday night she saw a post on a nursing social media page stating nurses were encouraged not to wear N95 masks in the Intensive Care Unit. Also circulating on social media is a Change.org petition titled, "US Physicians/Healthcare Workers For Personal Protective Equipment in COVID-19 Pandemic." The petition garnered more than 800,000 signatures by Friday afternoon.Part of the argument is the CDC downgraded the mode of transmission from aerosol to droplets. That means a surgical mask is allowed over the more sturdy N95 mask."Things that are frightening us the most is 1. Nurses are not allowed to bring their own N95 masks from home, we are not allowed to enter the hospital with them. 2. Management has been asking nurses not to wear their masks in hallways, or at the nursing station... and otherwise nurses have been written up with HR if they do not remove the masks... Masks having been removed from floors and only held by management," the unnamed nurse said, adding some hospitals nurses are only allowed one per shift.That is what's causing some nurses to panic. The nurse said there's been talk about refusing patient care until they are supplied with what they deem sufficient protection equipment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Now that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration, San Diego County is one step closer to getting more people vaccinated.Moderna says its vaccine is safe and 94% effective. It will come in two doses taken 28 days apart.This week, there are two county hospitals that are expecting shipments of Moderna's vaccine. According to hospitals officials, the first shipment will arrive at Rady Children’s Hospital on Monday. It's unclear how many doses of the vaccine the hospital will receive.UC San Diego is also scheduled to receive their Moderna COVID-19 shipment this week.Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Twitter that California is expecting 672,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine. It’s still unclear how many of those will be given to San Diego.By the end of the week and with two vaccines available, the federal government expects there will be 7.9 million doses delivered to more than 3,700 locations across the country.The distribution of the Moderna vaccine comes as the Centers for Diease Control and Prevention releases new recommendations about who should get the vaccine next. The CDC says frontline essential workers and adults ages 75 and older should be the priority in the next round.The agency describes essential workers as firefighters, police, teachers, and school staff. Those working in food and agricultural sectors, as well as U.S. Postal Service employees, public transit workers, and grocery store workers would be in that category.San Diego County has not said if the CDC's new recommendations will have any impact on their vaccine roll out plan.Until a wide distribution is available, the governor asks people to stay at home and wear a mask. 1734

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Public health experts are worried that with COVID-19 cases surging, family gatherings during the upcoming holiday season could make for an epidemiological disaster. While officials are urging people to follow stay-at-home orders and avoid indoor gatherings with those outside of the immediate household, they realize that many families will get together regardless of the risk.“There are a lot of reasons why don’t do the thing that your physician or your county board of supervisors would label compliant," said Dr. Rebecca Fielding-Miller, a social epidemiologist and associate professor at UC San Diego. "And so the best thing that we can do is say, OK. In the absence of perfection, here are the other things you can do to protect yourself.”Fielding-Miller recommends that a family that insists on getting together for Thanksgiving create, in effect, its own version of a bubble such as the one successfully used for the restart of the NBA season. To create the safest bubble possible requires invitees to the dinner to isolate beginning at least by Wednesday the week before Thanksgiving. Each person should then get a COVID test three days before the holiday so there is enough time to get the result back. Fielding-Miller said it's critical to have a conversation with guests to make sure they understand and agree to those safety measures. "When we talk about bubbles, your bubble is really only as safe as the person who is the least interested in maintaining the safety of the bubble," Fielding-Miller said.Once Thanksgiving Day arrives, eating outdoors is much safer than indoors. Fielding-Miller also suggests trying to keep members of different households spaced out as much as possible. It is also critical to wear masks as much as possible.She also said that safety efforts do not end on Thanksgiving Day. "You need a plan for, I would say, testing five to eight days after you spent time with your family, so you can immediately let people know if you are positive and they need to get tested,” Fielding-Miller said. She also recommends keeping your children home from school for at least the first two days after the holiday, to protect them from children who may have contracted the virus during Thanksgiving trips.Fielding-Miller said how San Diego behaves to control the spread of the virus over Thanksgiving will help determine the severity of the situation for the December holidays. But while she said this is likely to be a very difficult holiday season, there is reason for optimist. “A vaccine is coming and it really is darkest before the dawn. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New rules for purchasing bullets go into effect on July 1st, requiring background checks every time someone wants to buy ammunition in California.The law is part of Proposition 63, which voters approved in 2016. In addition to the background checks, it requires a small fee for each transaction."This is to provide more checks and balances, so we have a better idea of who's being sold the ammunition," says Ron Markus, the spokesperson for San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. "If you're someone that doesn't pass a background check, you shouldn't be allowed to buy ammunition."But critics say the law will have unintended consequences, including creating a black market for bullets bought out of state."If you're a Californian, and you go out of state to get ammunition and bring it back into the state of California, you've just broken the law. But if you live in another state, you can bring as much ammunition as you want into the state and give it to anybody in California that you like," says Michael Schwartz, the Executive Director of the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC. He thinks that will lead criminals to conspire with people from out of state to supply bullets.Schwartz also says the background checks won't be as easy as the law intended. As it's written, the law requires instant background checks that run people's information through criminal and mental health databases. Schwartz says only people who are already in the system will get an "instant" result. The rest will have to go through more lengthy checks to buy bullets, which could take days."This won't prevent bad people from doing bad things," Schwartz says. "All it does is put onerous requirements on people who are looking to follow the law."Meanwhile, gun shops are seeing a surge in bullet sales as July nears. They also believe they'll get more business once the law goes into effect since it requires all bullet sales to be done in person at a store. Any online sales will also have to go through a licensed retailer in California.But Schwartz says gun store owners still oppose the rule, even though they stand to profit from it."It's more business for the shop owners, but not more business that they're happy about," he says.Gun safety advocates say the concerns are misguided. They say the sacrifices gun owners will have to make because of the new laws are reasonable when compared to the loss of life from guns."We're sick and tired of hearing about people being shot and killed every single day in this country," says Marcus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating a possible road rage incident that ended with a car crashing into a tree in Scripps Ranch.According to San Diego police, the crash happened just after 11 p.m. Monday on Scripps Ranch Boulevard and Spring Canyon Road.Police said a couple in a silver SUV called 911 and claimed a black car intentionally backed into them, causing the black car to lose control before crashing into a tree.However, the driver of the black car said he accidentally cut off the SUV, so they then hit him from the back and forced him to crash.The incident remains under investigation, as police try to sort out the full details of the episode.No injuries were reported. 699
