"I found out very easily the way to anybody's heart is through baking!" said Terry Chamberlin. Chamberlin says she's lucky to be a grandmother to four."But then my son had an opportunity to move out of state, he took with him, against my will, three of my grandchildren!"She was scared to lose connection with her grandchildren, so she got creative.Chamberlin would send a box of homemade cookies with sides of frosting and sprinkles. Over Skype, she would decorate the cookies with her grandkids."It's so hard at Christmas time or their birthday to buy them a gift if you don't know them very well. So by staying connected by Skype, you get to see what they like and what shirts they're wearing and what their favorite color is," said Chamberlin.When friends started hearing about this, they wanted to do something similar with their loved ones.Chamberlin decided to start a business, called Gramma in a Box.For , you receive a themed box with three projects. Customers can get a monthly subscription or choose a plan that works best for them. The cookies come baked, and few household items are needed."The time you get to spend with your children or your grandchildren, or standing back and watching them be creative, that's worth more than a month to me."So far, she has about a hundred customers. Virgin Galactic is preparing to land among the stars.On Wednesday, Virgin Galactic said they were working on its final preparations at its base in New Mexico as the VSS Unity is scheduled to launch into space from Spaceport America sometime in the fall.The company said the ship would be crewed by two pilots and several research payloads in the cabin.Virgin Galactic says its top priority is safety, so they want to make sure the pilots are prepared for the task at hand.To do just that, they will be using VMS Eve as an in-flight simulator. The pilots will use Eve to practice the identical approach and landing pattern since it's similar to Unity's, Chief Pilot Dave Mackay stated."The cockpit structure of Eve is almost identical to that of Unity: the same pilot seats and windows, as well as very similar flight controls and instruments," Mackay said in the press release.The company will go through a full, planned rehearsal before the VSS Unity takes flight. 973

WASHINGTON (AP) — More police officers have died in the line of duty this year in the United States than in 2017, according to data released Thursday. Most were killed by gunfire, and vehicular accidents claimed nearly as many officers' lives.The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund said in a report that 144 federal, state and local officers have died so far in 2018. That figure represents roughly a 12 percent increase from the 129 who died in 2017.The majority of the officers who died were either shot — 52 this year, up from 46 in 2017 — or fatally injured in car or motorcycle crashes, which accounted for 50 deaths. Other fatalities involved heart attacks, strokes, drownings and cancer and other illnesses among those who responded to the 9/11 World Trade Center attack.Of the officers who were shot, eight were killed during investigative activity and six were killed while responding to calls of a domestic or public disturbance, according to the report. Two were shot while serving warrants, two died while handling or transporting prisoners and two others were inadvertently shot by other officers.Craig Floyd, the fund's chief executive officer, called the increase in deaths disappointing after a decline in 2017."Sadly this reminds us that public safety is a dangerous job and can come at a very steep price," Floyd said in a statement. "We must never take the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers for granted, and we must remember the families of the fallen who are left behind."Of the officers who died in traffic-related incidents, 32 were killed in crashes involving another vehicle and 14 were struck while outside their vehicle. An additional four were killed in a motorcycle accident.The officers who died in 2018 include a sheriff's deputy in Sacramento County, California, killed in a shootout at an auto parts store; a Greensboro, North Carolina, police officer killed in a car crash while responding to a call for a robbery; and a Greene County, Missouri, sheriff's deputy who drowned when his car was swept away by water.The states that experienced the highest number of officer fatalities were Texas, California, Florida and New York, where eight died. 2214

(KGTV) -- An Escondido woman accused in a vehicle crash that killed four people, including two children, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to all charges levied against her.Ashley Rene Williams pleaded not guilty to four counts of murder and four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated during her initial court appearance, which was via video conference.The 28-year-old’s bail was set at million.According to Escondido police, just before 8:30 p.m. on May 5, Williams was driving northbound near Oak Hill Drive and San Pasqual Valley Road when she struck two adults and two children walking in the area.Abel Valdez, 33, and 11-year-old Emmanuel Riva died at the scene. Ten-year-old Yovanny Felix and 50-year-old Carmela Camacho were rushed to the hospital, where they later passed away.The boys were brothers, and Camacho was their grandmother. Valdez was Camacho’s boyfriend, according to a GoFundMe established for the family.Williams was taken to the hospital after also suffering injuries.Following an investigation that involved the analysis of evidence that included cellphone and vehicle computer data, lab test results, and roadway measurements, Williams was arrested at her home on June 4.Prosecutors said Williams was under the influence of drugs and using her cellphone at the time of the collision.10News learned Williams’ driver’s license was already suspended as of Feb. 18, 2020, due to a drug-related offense. Castro IV, 28, will be sentenced to 21 years in state prison on June 15.Castro was on a five-day methamphetamine binge and suffering from paranoid delusions when he shot Antonia Herrera -- the girlfriend of his best friend -- and dumped her body in the 27600 block of Champagne Boulevard near the Lawrence Welk Resort, said Deputy District Attorney Keith Watanabe.A resident on a walk discovered Herrera's body on an embankment on Jan. 12, 2017.Castro -- a documented gang member from Las Vegas -- was arrested there a month later and brought back to San Diego to face charges. 810
