SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Carlsbad mother believes the social isolation created by the pandemic was one factor in the suicide attempt of her 11-year-old son.A photo shows Jessie, 11, playing tetherball outside her home two Thursdays ago. Hours after the photo was taken, his mother Tara says her son vomited.Soon after, an ambulance was rushing him to the hospital. In her kitchen cupboard was a nearly empty Costco-sized bottle of ibuprofen."It was a 500-pill bottle, and we estimate he took 400 pills," said Tara.At the hospital, Jesse couldn't breathe on his own. His kidneys failed, but doctors were able to save Jesse."It's a miracle, so thankful," said a tearful Tara.The grateful mother is now in search of answers. She talked to her son in the hospital."He said he didn't see that there was much worth living for. He felt like there were too many things stacked up against him," said Tara.Tara believes one of those things has been the social isolation caused by the pandemic. After his family moved, Jesse ended up after a new school in the fall. Tara says his old friends 'ghosted' him."I would encourage him to try to make friends in the neighborhood, and he'd say things like 'Why bother?'" said Tara.Tara thought he was just getting adjusted. Stan Colllins, a suicide prevention specialist with the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council, says social isolation can cut kids off from the support they lean on to deal with stressors, big and small."We do have data to show there has been an increase in suicidal thoughts among youth," said Collins.In Jesse's case, those thoughts led to action. Tara says she's sharing her family's story in hopes of helping another family."Please lock up your medicaton ... Talk to your kids and see how they're doing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A driver led CHP officers on an hour-long pursuit from Southern Orange County to Mission Valley Wednesday night.The chase ended on the onramp from southbound I-805 to westbound I-8.Ray Scheidnes, with California Highway Patrol, says the chase started in the San Juan Capistrano area when they received reports of someone driving erratically just after 6:30 p.m.When they tried to pull over the driver, she instead drove south on I-5 into San Diego County and eventually onto I-8.  The driver even called into 9-1-1 dispatch and tried to explain why she wasn't stopping.“I believe that she was afraid to pull over, mentioned something about possibly having some previous run-ins with law enforcement that she didn't think went too well,” Scheidnes said.Scheidnes also added they’re not quite sure why she eventually stopped in Mission Valley.“The vehicle didn't seem to run out of gas or have any mechanical problems, just came to a stop, I think she just decided to pull over,” he said.CHP says the driver is an Orange County resident. She has not been identified. There are no immediate signs of drugs or alcohol, but she could be facing charges of resisting arrest and failure to yield.  1247

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of Hillcrest residents are fighting a proposed housing tower they say would take the sunshine out of their neighborhood and add traffic. Greystar Development wants to build a seven-story, 111 unit mixed-use housing complex near 7th and Robinson, not far from Whole Foods. The complex would replace the parking lot AT&T employees currently use for the company's building across the street. The lot borders a neighborhood filled with Spanish-style homes. The city gave Greystar a density bonus because it includes nine very low-income units. It also determined the developer would not have to do a costly and time-consuming environmental impact report."Housing, housing, housing is the only thing they're going to consider. And they're not going to consider the impact on the neighborhood that's there," said Tom Mullaney, who heads a group called Uptown United, which is appealing the project. Uptown United is fighting the city's determination that Greystar doesn't have to do an environmental impact report. That goes before the City Council April 23.Mullaney said Uptown United also wants the project scaled back. Jim Ivory, Greystar's senior director of development, said in a statement that company included community input in designing the project, which has the backing of the city's Uptown Community Planning group."We are proud of the design that has evolved in the last 18 months," he said. "Staff and community input has been incorporated along the way for the betterment of the project."Some in the neighborhood also welcome the project. Herbert Ross, who lives down the street, says the AT&T lot has become a public nuisance."The hangout that it's become for people who are homeless who don't clean up after themselves, I think anything would be an improvement to the area," he said. But Michael Bayless says the project would take away the direct sunlight he gets in his home office."I just came from Seattle to escape the lack of sun," he said. "It would be depressing."Greystar's development would also include retail at street level, and a 190 spot parking garage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former San Diego Unified School District student and football player is suing the district.The lawsuit filed by Jason Srouy alleges he was never informed of the potential financial and legal risks of participating and playing an organized sport if a lawsuit were to be filed alleging any negligent or other claims against the student-athlete.In 2018 Srouy and the school district were sued by a referee. The referee was injured during a 2015 game and claimed it was done on purpose. He alleged Srouy had a history of unsportsmanlike conduct known and encouraged by the coaching staff.At the time Srouy told 10News he was playing wide receiver during the game, tasked with blocking the opposing cornerback. During the block, he says the opposing player fell onto the back of the referee's legs, injuring the official.In a previous interview, Srouy said after learning of the lawsuit a school official led his family to believe the district would help him; however that was not the case. “It wasn’t on purpose, it was an accident, I didn’t mean to hurt anybody," said Srouy.Srouy’s attorney tells Team 10 he was eventually dropped from the lawsuit but not before racking incurring more than 5,000 in costs and fees.A spokesperson for the district says they can’t comment on pending litigation. 1323

SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - Trial started Monday for the Yuma, Arizona police officer accused of raping a woman during a visit to San Diego.Jared Elkins, 34, is charged with eight felony counts of rape for the alleged incident in September 2017.The 23-year-old woman’s mother called 911 to report a crime at a home on Marlborough Street in Kensington. Elkins, who is related to the alleged victim by marriage, was staying at her home.Elkins, the alleged victim, and two other family members went to dinner then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at the home before the alleged assault occurred, according to prior court testimony.RELATED: Arizona police officer charged with raping San Diego womanThe alleged victim testified during a preliminary hearing in April that Elkins physically forced her to participate in sex acts despite her pleas for him to stop. The two other family members were asleep in the house so small "you can hear someone breathing in the next room," the woman testified.During the alleged assault, the woman said she asked Elkins what would happen if she cried out for help. "He said, ‘I would kill you,"' the woman testified. After the incident, the woman said she found another family member in the house and they called police.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Besides forcible rape, Elkins is charged with rape of an intoxicated person, forcible digital penetration, two counts each of forcible oral copulation and oral copulation of an intoxicated person, forcible sexual penetration and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person.Elkins -- a seven-year veteran of the Yuma Police Department who later resigned -- faces 14 years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox. 1834
