HAMPTON ROADS, Va.— Online shopping is convenient, especially at a time when everyone is encouraged to avoid crowds, but you’ll want to be sure to take extra steps during the holidays to make sure you’re not placing an order for someone else to pick up.Lori Torres, CEO of Parcel Pending, a package management company says one in five Americans is a victim of porch pirates.Porch pirates are constantly lurking for their next victim. They steal at night and they even steal during the day. The good news is, there are several things shoppers can do to make sure no one else gets your package except you.“Know when your package is getting delivered,” said Torres. “Don’t order and be going out of town for a couple of days when you were waiting for a package to arrive.”Torres says people should be monitoring delivery updates and be sure to grab their package once it’s delivered. She says shoppers can often times track and reroute packages online or through an app so they arrive when they are ready to pick them up.“A lot of the courier services from FedEx to UPS will let you reroute, and they can either hold them at their hub or they can hold them at a retail store.”That’s exactly what Amy Dallam is doing this holiday season. “One of the things I do is I sign up for text notifications of the delivery status so I know when it’s approaching and I can maybe delay an errand or something,” explained Dallam.If you’re not home during a delivery, experts say it’s a good idea to ask a neighbor to hold onto your package. Another safe option is mailing your package to a secure locker or P.O Box. You can also have the retailer hold on to your goods.“You can buy online and go into a store pick it up in a locker so now it’s contact free you get your item and safe and secure and you can get it the same day,” said Torres.Torres encourages anyone who has their package stolen to file a report with police.As criminals look for their next opportunity neighbors say they’ll be watching.“I would say, just as neighbors, look out for each other and if you see something that’s not right, follow up on it,” Dallam. BALTIMORE, Md. – In the Matthew Henson community of Baltimore, Dr. Marvin “Doc” Cheatham knows the neighborhood’s numbers. “These are rowhouses. 40 or 50 of them in a block,” he said, “1,200 houses; total 363 vacant or boarded up houses. It’s awful.” His Baltimore neighborhood is no stranger to challenges. “It’s tough. Very poor. High crime. High dropout rate. Open air drug markets,” Dr. Cheatham said. McKean Park, though, may be the start of something new. The abandoned homes that once sat there are now gone – and have a new purpose. “We take it, we clean it up and we give it new life,” said Max Pollock with Brick and Board, a place where old wood finds new life. They are just one of several groups involved in the “Baltimore Wood Project.” “They came from a really, really old structure,” Pollock said, as he showed off a 200-year-old piece of lumber. The idea works like this: before an abandoned building is torn down, crews salvage all the materials they can get from it – like wood – and keep it out of landfills. At the same time, they give the people who live in those neighborhoods the job of doing that. “It gives you a new sense of your community,” said Baltimore native Kobe Bland, who works at Brick and Board. “You start to view your community a little different because you see the potential of what could be.” What started out as the “Baltimore Wood Project,” though, is now evolving into the “Urban Wood Project,” with the hope it could be replicated in other cities.” In just four years, they’ve salvaged one million square feet of wood. The USDA Forest Service is spearheading the project and the work to expand it. “This is wood for example locked up in these vacant and abandoned rowhomes that would otherwise be wasted – sent to the landfill or otherwise wasted – and we see the potential to capture and reuse that wood for a greater good,” said Sarah Hines of the USDA Forest Service, who has worked on the project in Baltimore. Back in his neighborhood, Doc Cheatham said he’s seen what kind of change it can bring. “It brings hope,” he said.It’s a hope that comes from salvaging the past, to try and build a better future. 2171

RICHMOND, Va., — Hospitalizations and the number of cases connected to the coronavirus are decreasing, according to Henrico-Richmond District Health Director Dr. Danny Avula.Avula and city officials provided an update on the progress surrounding COVID-19 and evictions during a Monday afternoon press conference inside City Council Chambers. Avula said the progress has recently plateaued, but the city is in a better position compared to other states.“The pandemic is still very real. COVID-19 is real and what we don’t want to happen is that COVID-19 catches us slipping,” Mayor Levar Stoney said.There have been more than 2,200 positive cases reported in the city and 29 deaths since the start of the pandemic. No Richmonders have died from complications to the virus within the past two weeks, Stoney said.Dr. Avula said they are investigating a cluster of cases that stemmed from a party.About 50 people attended the party indoors and four people have tested positive, Avula said. He would not reveal where the party was held.“Now we are seeing the immediate impact of that. I think that serves as a cautionary tale that the virus is still out there.
