VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) - Amid a COVID-related cancellation at a Valley Center cemetery, a community is coming together to help save an annual tradition.Valley Center Cemetery is the final resting place to more than 300 veterans. On Friday, local florist Jenelle Brinneman learned an annual holiday sight would not be laid out.She says the local chapter of a nonprofit that puts down Christmas wreaths at military grave markers announced there would be no wreaths, citing logistical problems in placing them amid COVID-19 restrictions and stay-at-home orders."Our hearts dropped, because we know how much it means," said Brinneman.On Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Brinneman raised money to place roses at military grave sites amid similar cancellations."There were strangers thanking us. People were crying, watching us put roses down," said Brinneman.Undeterred after the most recent disappointment, Brinneman posted on Facebook on Friday a call for donations to make wreath sprays, a smaller version of wreaths. When she returned home Saturday evening, she discovered something astounding."I just started crying right there. Our town is amazing ... My driveway was filled with pine, cedar, ribbons, and wreaths companies were about to throw away," said Brinneman.Brinneman set up a workshop in her driveway. Dozens of volunteers have signed up to help assemble."This is what the Christmas spirit is all about," said Brinneman.She's also hoping to include message from kids."It will be so great to walk past and see a little note attached from an amazing child in our town," said Brinneman.Brinneman says come Christmas Eve -- thanks to a community's support -- she'll be able to place the sprays at every military grave marker in the cemetery."They deserve to be recognized. Seeing the wreaths on the grave markers is something unexplainable. Because of the community, loves ones will see those wreaths," said Brinneman.Brinneman is still in need of a lot of messages from kids. (KGTV) — A man wanted for trying to kidnap young girls in the Los Angeles and Escondido areas is in custody, according to San Diego Sheriff's Department.SDSO says Elijah Lopez, 24, was wanted on suspicion of following and forcibly grabbing a six-year-old girl who was walking with her blind father in Huntington Park, south of downtown Los Angeles, on Tuesday.A wanted flyer was issued bu LAPD and eventually reached SDSO's Valley Center substation.Wednesday, an SDSO deputy was driving back to Valley Center when he noticed a man matching Lopez's description at the intersection of Highway 78 and Broadway, wearing the same clothes detailed in the wanted flyer, the department says.As the deputy detained Lopez, SDSO says an observer flagged the deputy down, claiming Lopez had been following a juvenile, who ran into a nearby grocery store for help."It was near the end of his shift," said Lt. Pat Shannon, the Valley Center Sheriff's Substation's commanding officer. "He still had the mindset to have those observation skills on, thank goodness he did because I'm positive he averted something worse from happening."Escondido Police say they are investigating a case that occurred on Tuesday, in which Lopez was reportedly seen at about 4:30 p.m. in the area of Valley Parkway and Midway Dr. chasing a young woman. The woman entered a store to get away, an EPD spokesperson said. URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – As colleges and universities are tasked with safely beginning classes, researchers at one school are ramping up testing. But they're putting away the nasal swab in exchange for a test they say can be scaled to perform thousands of tests a day with turnaround in just hours.College junior Alliyah Rumbolt-Lemond is already back on campus and regularly testing for COVID-19.“I know if you have in-person classes, you're going to be on campus, you have to get tested twice a week,” she says.The college junior is one of the more than 51,000 students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign returning to school during the pandemic, posing a logistical challenge for administrators.“It was very daunting,” said U of I chemistry professor Marty Burke.He was part of the team of university researchers who developed a two-step saliva-based COVID-19 test to tackle the problem.“We called this our ‘target, test and tell’ initiative, overall collectively described as a ‘Shield.’”The Shield Initiative needed to be scalable, and unlike the four-step nasopharyngeal swab tests, not vulnerable to supply chain bottlenecks.“It's a very powerful concept that if we can get to that fast, frequent testing, we really could get control of the situation,” said Burke.A quick stop on route to class or work, integrated with local health care agencies, students receive results on an app within hours, not days.“It takes about five to ten minutes to submit your saliva sample and then the results are typically back on your phone within three to six hours,” said Burke.The university’s veterinary school diagnostic lab has been converted into a full-scale human COVID-19 testing facility. It’s capable of processing some 10 to 20,0000 saliva tests per day.“I want to hang out with friends and do it the right way, like following CDC guidelines,” said Alliyah. “But I feel more comfortable saying ‘hey when's the last time you got tested?’”A total of 20 testing sites with 40 stations are set up across campus. Users can even get exposure notifications if they’ve been in contact with someone who tests positive.“If someone tests positive then same day that person is isolated,” said Burke. “Which we think is critical for ultimately the efficacy of the testing program.”They’ve published a pre-print paper on their COVID-19 saliva test, which is undergoing peer review and are seeking FDA approval.For students like Alliyah, it’s one-stop piece of mind.“It makes you feel like I'm safer on campus because even though we only have to get tested twice a week you can get tested every day the testing site is open if you wanted to.” 2653
Uber and Lyft are pushing a proposition this November they say is vital to their survival in California.And the ads are already starting. At issue is Proposition 22, which would carve an exemption into state law to allow the rideshare companies to continue employing drivers as independent contractors. Otherwise, they would have to reclassify the drivers as employees, guaranteeing them a swath of rights and protections, as mandated by Assembly Bill 5, which the state passed in 2019. Prop 22 would allow the rideshare companies to continue employing drivers as independent contractors, but guarantees them a minimum pay and also money for health insurance once they work a certain number of hours. "I only do this because it fits my lifestyle and what I do," said Chelsea Scott, a San Diego musician who drives for Uber and Lyft. "We're not getting benefits. We don't get any of those things, and I knew that coming into this. This wasn't a trick of any kind."Uber, Lyft, and Doordash released a new 30-second television ad that makes claims about the timing and impact of the law. First, it says California politicians passed AB 5 amid skyrocketing unemployment. Truth be told, the bill was signed into law in September 2019, before the coronavirus was even discovered. At the time, the state's unemployment rate was 4.2%. In August, it was 13.3%.However, the ad follows that with a key point, under AB 5, it will be illegal for rideshare drivers to operate as independent contractors in California. The narrator says that is "threatening to shut down rideshare and food delivery services."
